The Boy Who Dared - Section 1

26 comments:

  1. As Helmuth starts out he believes Hitler is a good leader but as he gets older he realizes he is horrible for banning Jewish shops and laws like it. also adding Hugo to the story i don't think he wants Hugo in his life

    1) Question- why did Herr vinke answer his question so rudely
    2) Judge/evaluate- this was a really bad time for Jews and I feel really bad for them because they are getting killed based on religion and what they look like I think that is very wrong to do such a thing like that.
    3) Infer- I took real life like holding people hostage and basically what Hitler is doing is killing and holding them hostage with no freedom to so or do as pleased
    4) Visualize- I thought about being in a jail cell and being scared I can’t even imagine what he and his family are think they don’t know when they are going to get killed or much as taken
    5) Determine importance- when Hitler came into ruler and the people’s reactions
    6) Fix up techniques- I got confused when helmith kept on flashing back to parts in his life and then to the jail cell so I had to reread many of time to make sure I understood what was going on in the book it really helped
    7) Summarize- helmith and his family go to jail and he has flashbacks of his life and what he feels about Hitler and what he thinks about Hitler

my comment to you is to make sure that you add in #s before mrs.mayo grades it and i think you should add maybe a little more about hittler and helmiths teacher but it is your choice.

    1) Question- At first I was wondering who Mutti was. I thought maybe a girlfriend, his mom, sister? I soon found out it was his mother. (3/4)
    2) Connect- It mentions “epoch” and in Science class we were talking about those and other time periods such as eras, etc. (22/2)
    3) Judge/Evaluate- Helmuth seems to be a quiet boy who mostly keeps to himself. (8)
    4) Infer- It seems Helmuth and his family were happy about Hitler coming to power except Oma and Opa. (I found out later that Helmuth was beginning to dislike Hitler for the things he’s doing to the Jews). (11/2)
    5) Visualize- I can see the wind blowing the little papers all over. The scatter and swirl with the wind. (16/6)
    6) Determine Importance- Hitler says, “’… Christianity as the foundation of our national morality and the family as the basis of national life.” Just one more clue that Hitler is against Judaism. (22/4)

I agree with your second technique, Sam. I feel very bad as well, and I feel a bit awkward when we talk about Hitler and the Holocaust because I have Jewish friends and family.

1 One question I had during the book was: page 53 paragraph 4 does Helmuth like being in the Hitler youth grope?
2 connect page 38 paragraph 6 : my mother just got a new boyfriend and likes to orders us around like Hugo does.
3 predict page 38 paragraph 6: will Mutti marry Hugo.?
4 infer page 38 paragraph 6: Mutti will marry Hugo because Hugo acts like he is Helmuth’s father.
5 judge/evaluate pages all, paragraph all: Helmuth is funny, cool, and smart.
6 visualize page 51 paragraph 1: Helmuths is at school and getting his paper he worked so hard on.

1)Question:Why does Helmuth start to think about his two best friend when new prisoners go into the prison yard?(54/4)

2)Connect:"Defend Yourselves! Don't shop at Jewish store." A Similaritie to this would be when the white hated the black people and made signs of black only.(28/2)

3)Predict:I think Helmuth will try to escape his life in prison.(54/5)

4)Judge/Evaluate:I think Herr Vinke Helmuth teacher is a rude and is a disrespectful teacher to his students and should get fired.(30/3)

5)Infer:Jews were persucted and start to have less freedom and also got killed as Hitler rule.(28/2)

6)Visualize:One picture that i can image is when Helmuth uses the slope bucket that has cut up newspaper of Hitler inside of it and uses it to scrape himself. I can also picture Helmuth anger and hatred face that he hates Hitler.(23/3)

My comment to Tyler Willcocks question is Helmuth actually likes the Jungvolk because of the weekend hiking and camping trips that take him away from the Sachsenstrasse. Helmuth also likes the idea of detective work, of working to serve and protect the public, but couldn't refuse because Hugo bought him the shirt and paid the dues already.(56/4)

  7. Kristy Lee-- Whe you were talking about Herr Vinke in #4 I totally agree with you.He should get fired. To bad it was the "Law" that he had to talk good about Hitler. But I still think it was very rude that he had to be mean also to other students about sharing there own opinon. -Alexa Billeb 4th Hour Mayo

    1) Question- My first strategy was question. My question was how does helmuth end up in prison with Hugo (Nazi) living with him? (38/6)

    2) Connect- When making my connection I was thinking about who was all involved in the holocaust. And making a connection I know people who are Jewish. And just hearing what Hitler and his Nazis did to the Jews was very cruel. (16/3)

    3) Predict- I also predicted what’s going to happen in the book. Since Helmuth switches back and forth from being a kid in the book to being older and being in a cell, I wanted to predict what would happen when he was in the cell. I predict that Helmuth will get killed or executed in the cell. (3/1)

    4) Judge/Evaluate- I used Judge and Evaluate because in this certain part in the book I would want to judge Helmuth on. When Helmuth is complaining about living with Hugo I think he’s almost like crazy because Hugo is a Nazi soldier. I know Helmuth doesn’t agree with everything Hugo does, but Helmuth is a lot safer considering he lives with a Nazi. (3/2)

    5) Infer- I inferred that Adolf Hitler is going to start having people sat stuff at school about him. What I mean by that is that Hitler is going to have teachers and students praising him as not only there leader but almost like their god. He’s also going to have the teachers talk about how great of a leader he is. (42/2)

    6) Visualize- I used visualize because at times I had a good movie or picture in my head. This one particular part in the book though I had a great picture in my head. When Helmuth is lying in front of the RRG radio listening to Hitler’s parade. This parade was held to welcome Hitler into power. And while Helmuth is listening to Hitler’s parade on the radio Hans and Gerhard (Helmuth brothers) are at this parade. (19/2)

    2) PREDICT- I THINK SOMETHING BAD WILL HAPPEN SOON LIKE A WAR OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT(27/4)
    3) JUDGE/EVALUATE- HELMUTH HIS COMPLAINING A LOT AND GETTING MAD AT MUMS BOYFRIEND HUGO(3/3)
    4) BUILD- BROTHER WORBS SPEAKS OUT A LOT(25/5)
    5) INFER- I KNEW HITLER CAME TO POWER AND I THINK HE WILL START A WAR(22/2)
    6) VISUALIZE- I SEE HITLER BEING CRUEL AND MAYBE STARTING A WAR(13/3)

1-Question:Was Helmuth sad to move to the Apartment? (40-2)

2-Connect: Like when I’m at school saying a question and the teacher thinks I mean something els other than what I say. (44-4)

3-Predict: My prediction is that Helmuths real father is a Jew so later on Helmuth will have to go into hiding.(18/19-7)

4: I believe Helmuth wants a father but doesn't and does not like Hugo his mother’s boyfriend/fiancé

5: Infer-I watched a movie where a young kid tried to go into to military because he needed to help to get money to move out of his cousins.

6: visualize- I think in my mind where Helmuth is in his bed while his brothers are at the parade. How cold and lonely he would feel with just the coves over the top of him and a light creaking through a crack in the door.

    1) Question- Why does Helmuth despise Hugo so much?

    2) Connection- Helmuth says that he enjoys detective books and I do as well. I like books that have suspense and so does Helmuth.

3)Judge/Evaluate- I think Helmuth is the type of person that wants to stand up for themselves and follow whatever rules they believe are true.

4)Determine Importance- I think it is important when Hugo tells Helmuth that he will be a great leader because if Helmuth continues to take in everything that he hears from Hugo and Herr Asmus then he will become "brainwashed" and not see the bigger picture that Jews are being
torchured and killed because of Hitler's belief.

    5) Visualize- I can visualize Herr Vinke being enraged at Helmuths comment about the naval soldier hanging on to the German flag. Herr Vinke is too lost in Hitler's ideas that he misunderstands Helmuths comment.

    6) Predict- I predict that Helmuthand Karl Schnibbe's "Detective Agency" will not be a succes. I think that a NAZI soldier will misunderstans the idea of their dectective agency and chaos will occur.

  12. Chaly Xiong – 1st Hour English

1)Question- Why does Helmuth force himself to write the essay well? (Pg. # 50 Paragraph #3)

2)Predict- I predict that after hearing his brother Gerhard‘s perspective to Hitler Helmuth will reflect upon it in a later part in the book and eventually do something to evoke him to be sent to jail. Since it seems he likes and agrees with his religion it collides with what he was told by Hugo. I believe this will lead to future arguments between Helmuth and Hugo. (Pg. # 49 Paragraph #3)

3)Judge/Evaluate- I think that Hugo was a man who was crippled by the economy from the previous war because he is well “brainwashed” by Hitler and his Nazi Party. He believes that Hitler was sent by God to bring Germany back to its original glory. This alone shows that he has total loyalty towards Hitler.
    (Pg. # 53 Paragraph # 6)

4)Infer- On page 33 paragraph 5, Opa says that “this hatred can’t last forever” towards the Jews. Of course, this statement would be proved wrong when Hitler eventually orders the total eradication of all Jewish people and over half of all Jews are killed.

5)Determine Importance- the passages when the older Helmuth is in the prison and it flashes back shows how much he changed and what his eventual opinion towards the Nazis will be. It is a very interesting set up to have the story be told through flashbacks because we as the readers already know what will eventually happen to him.

6)Summarize- The chapter introduces Helmuth and the other important characters as it shows that the story is told in flashbacks from the older Helmuth in prison. It shows his initial opinions of the Nazis and how it slowly changes as he grows older and starts to understand the Nazis as they show their true colors.

In response to Konner Fierek you have great responses but you just forgot to add some page numbers. Also, in response to your question, Helmuth despises Hugo because he suddenly barges into his life and changes everything. There is now more tension between the brothers and the mom because Hugo is there.

1.Connection-I connected to Helmuth being under the influence of Hitler. He easily fell for Hitler's "brainwashing" people. I know it's hard when you're being influenced to not go along with something. If you grow up a certain way or do something a certain way, you're going to believe it's okay. That's why I understand why Helmuth thought it was okay to be on Hitler's side when it wasn't. (12/4)
2.Inference-I inferred that Helmuth was very up to date on everything going on, because all the soldiers were coming up to him and saying he was a smart kid and he knew what he was talking about. (4/5)
3.Summary-Hitler was just elected chancellor, and the whole school went crazy. The majority of people were cheering, but a couple Jewish people were upset. Teachers were constantly arguing about whether Hitler would do good things for Germany, or if he would just make everything worse. Helmuth believed Hitler would make everything better. (12/3)
4.Predicion-I predict that not just Helmuth is going to change his opinion, but that some other people close to him are going to end up changing their's, too.
5.Question-Why is Helmuth along with Hitler, but yet he doesn't mind Jews? Doesn't he know that Hitler is against them? (10/1)
6.Determine Importance-I think that Helmuth's not minding Jews is going to foreshadow how he's going to act later in the book.

In response to Chaly: My prediction is exactly the same. I think that more people around him are slowly going to change their opinions, and his will change, too.

    1) Connect- While reading this novel I can really connect it to myself. Not that I was involved in the holocaust, but because I take German (Deutsch) as a language and its really easy to understand the language involved. Some people talked about Mutti and Frühler and to me I jest kept on reading. I think this is kind of an advantage to this unit.
    (N/A)

    2) Predict- I can already tell from the arrival of Hugo, that Helmuth is going to revolt (not just because he is in prison) but because he is being forced to do ways that Helmuth doesn't fully believe in.
    (53,3)

    3) Build- When Helmuth was eine klein Junge he didn't really understand Hitler, but as the story continues we (the reader) can tell that he is growing less fond of the new chancelor.
    (N/A)

    4) Infer- I believe that the banishment of non-Deutsch books, Helmuth is going to start to see that the Jews aren't the only ones that are going to be restricted.
    (36,3)

    5) Visualize- I could really visualize the streets littered with propaganda and the posters and pictures of Hitler all over the streets and teh recked stores of Jewish shopkeepers.
    (49,4)

    6) Determine Importance- I find that this passage is horrifying that at any moment you could be taken away and killed. What made it worse is that you could hear the people suffering before death and the guillatine cut their heads off. How would you feel about this?
    (37,5)

Hailey, I'd just like to point out that from an early age Helmuth didn't technically like Hitler because he had little knowledge of what was going on. He was just excited about all the parades and that his mother was happy. And at first, before the Jews, Helmuth already started to dislike Hitler because of all the restrictions placed upon citizens that were not Jewish. they couldn't shop at some of their favorite stores because of the laws placed, they also couldn't even enjoy some of their favorite literature or listen to the world radio because of these laws.

    1) Question- I wondered why Vinke asked his question in such a mean manner.
    2) evaluate-At the time this event is taking a place it is horrible for the Jewish people. They are being separated, captured, and killed, because of something they cannot control. Also, because they do not fit Hitler’s description of the “Perfect” German, with the blonde hair an blue eyes. It is also very hypocritical to use the Jews as a scapegoat to blame them for something they didn’t do, also because Hitler was a Jew himself and he doesn’t have blonde hair or blue eyes. So he’s basically saying he needs to kill himself too? Very hypocritical.
    3) Infer- I related Hitler separating the Jews and killing them to the days of segregation. The blacks were segregated from the whites because of the color of their skin, which they couldn’t control, all of their rights were taken away along with equality.
    5) Determine importance- when Hitler came into ruler and the people’s reactions
    6) Fix up techniques- When Helmith has flashbacks about his life and then back when he was in the jail cell, I had a hard time keeping up so I had to re-read in order to really comprehend it.
    7) Summarize-Helmith and his family are captured and sent to jail. While Helmith is in the jail cell he has flash backs about his old life, nand he has a lot of time to think. While he is thinking he unveils to the reader his thoughts and feelings about Hitler.

1 Question: why does everyone in the class have to write the essay when Helmuth is the one who got in trouble? (pg. 45 paragraph 3)

2 Connection: When I first meet my sister’s boyfriend I didn’t like him like Helmuth doesn’t really like Hugo. (pg. 46 paragraph 2)

3 Prediction: I think that Mutti will marry Hugo in the end. I think that Helmuth won’t listen to Hugo because he doesn’t believe that Hugo’s doing the right thing. (pg 38 paragraph 3)

4 Judge/Evaluate: I do not trust Hugo with the family. I think that he only cares about Mutti and not about the kids. (38,6)

5 Infer: I infer that Herr Vinke only cares about himself and not about anyone else. (45,1)
