1) Question- Will the two boys (Helmuth and Rudi) be framed for the murder they're going to try to solve? (62/1) 2) Connect- When Helmuth finds he missed his friend Rudi, that's like my friends and I. If we don't see each other for a few days, we miss each other a ton! (57/5) 3) Predict- Helmuth wants to become a detective, and Rudi mentions, "A lot of people disappeared after the Gestapo visit". Is that how he ends up in jail? (58/3) 4) Judge/Evaluate- I don't trust that Inspector Becker. He seems a bit phony. Like maybe he's setting the two boys up for trouble. (62/4) 5) Build- Helmuth doesn't much like the Nazis, he just enjoys the Jungvolk because it gets him out of the house and away from Hugo. (56/5) 6) Visualize- I can see the rubble of the ruined Jewish shops, the smoke rising off the still smoldering synagogue, and all other ruined Jewish possessions. (73/2)
Taylor, the reason Gerhard worries so much about breaking the law is because he understands the consequences better. He's just keeping Helmuth safe.
Samantha Gleason 7th English Question – why doesn’t Helmuth learn his lesson to just deal with his life there are things we all have to do that we don’t want to do in life (p.all)

Chi Meng Xiong 5th hour 1. Question- does some people break the law by listening to other radio like Helmuth is? 2. Predict- I think that someone is going to tell on Helmuth and his friend about them passing around those papers. 3. Judge/Evaluate- I think what Helmuth and his friends are doing was right because to show that the Nazis were lying. 4. Connect- It reminds me of a book I’m reading in American history saying that I you run away from the army they would shoot u down. 5. Build- Helmuth hates the Nazis but doesn’t like showing it to his brothers. 6. I can picture how kids has to be indoor before curfew but if you’re not you’re in trouble.
1.Question: My question for the Boy who Dared is: Will Helmuth listen to the shortwave radio? I think later in the book I will find an answer to my question. ( 94/6 )
2.Connect: A connection I made with this section of the book is I have heard about Hitler’s Youth. It makes young Nazis almost and makes them hate the Jews. I think it’s just cruel what the Nazis are doing with these young boys. ( 55/5 )
3.Predict: A prediction throughout this book I made was Helmuth will listen to the shortwave radio. I predict this because it seems like when Gerhard is talking about it and showing it to Helmuth, Helmuth wants to use it badly. But in the end Gerhard locks it up. ( 91/4 )
4.Judge/Evaluate: While reading this book and the setting of the holocaust I really felt like there were many illegal things. Like even for the Germans they had a lot of laws that Hitler made for them. ( 92/5 )
5.Build: When reading I thought one person who builds throughout the story was Helmuth. He is changing from a “goodie goodie” in the beginning to a risk taker. An example of this is when the shortwave radio came in or showing the ID to the Nazis. He was almost sassing back at those times. And was willing to do many illegal things. (94/6 )
6.Summarize: Gerhard gets deported. Mutti marries a Nazi soldier names Hugo. Helmuth, Gerhard, Hans don’t like Hugo. Gerhard come back home for a short period of time and brings a shortwave radio back home with him and locks it up in a safe.
Chi Meng-- I think people who might have shortwave radio's like Helmuth does are secretly listening to the radio...but i believe they will soon get caught just like I predict later in the book Helmuth will get caught listening to the shortwave radio by a Nazi or even Hitler.
In response to Chi Meng I agree with you that people are secretly listening to the radio. I also think at some point they will get caught. from Kyle Erickson
Kyle Erickson Mrs. mayo 4th hour 1. Question- why does Gerhard come back home for a little while from war (93,3) 2. Predict- something bad will happen to Gerhard (99,4) 3. Judge evaluate- helmuth don’t like mums boyfriend Hugo (81,3) 4. Build- helmuth worries and complains a lot (94,5) 5. Visualize- I can see the destroyed Jewish buildings and stuff (73,1) 6. Summarize- Gerhard comes home and he has a shortwave radio and helmuth wants it but Gerhard won’t give it to him so helmuth says something mean to him pages 90-100
1) Question-Why doesn't Helmuth just do what he is told so he doesn't get yelled at? I think the answer could be that he is afraid that he will get yelled at for saying his own opinion about how he hates the Nazi’s. (All/all) 2) Connect-In this book it talks about how Gerhard goes into the army. This reminds me about my sister who has a boyfriend that's in the Marine Corps. (75/4) 3)Predict-I predict the Helmuth want to start a revolution because he does not like the Nazi's and does not like to do what’s his is told and say what to say and all that in this book you can finger that he wants to just say what HE thinks and what HE wants. (110/3) 4)Judge/Evaluate-I evaluate that Gerhard is growing up fast and wants to help serve by going into the army same with Helmuth by doing government stuff for his job. I judge that Hugo is just pushing Helmuth and the rest of the family into doing this entire even if they don’t like it. (75/4) 5) Build-In the begging of the book I thought Helmuth’s real father was a Jew and that’s how he ended up going to jail. Now I think Helmuth is going to get caught saying something bad about the Nazi’s, reading a forbidden book or get caught listening to the radio. 6) Summarize- Helmuth ends school and talks to his teacher. His teacher thinks he will become something great like a leader because of the essay he had written. Later on he gets a job and works with the fatherland by the government doing paper work. He is given a new job downstairs to file papers; while he is down there he takes a book that if forbidden from the country.
Kyle Eeickson-I think that answer from your question is becuse his has leave or breake like when someone takes vacation from a job for a little while. Also you couls comment on other peoples post to keep the convo going more.
1) Question- Why do you think Helmuth is in so much shock the morning when Hugo eats his eggs and toast? (72/3)
2) Predict- I think Helmuth will start a "Rebellion" against the nazis. Helmuth used to e a follower of the Nazi group but now that he sees their purpose and path, he realizes that Hitler only wants power and dictatorship. (79/2)
3) Connect- Gerhard wants to fight fot his country, this reminds me of my cousin, Isaac, who strongly believes in fighting for what is right. Isaac is more than likely going to join the Special Forces when he turns 18. It also reminds me of my dad who was a strong patriot. My dad joined the U.S. Army when he was 17, and retired 4 years later at the rank of Staff Seargent.(75/4)
4)Summarize- Helmuth proves to everyone that he would b a great leader, but inside Helmuth doesnt know which path to choose: NAZI or Jew. Helmuth just tries to prove to his teachers that he is going to be a leader, so you might say he's "undercover" when it comes to Hugo and school.(70/1)
5)Judge/Evaluate- I truly believe that Helmuth would be a great leader, however, not a leader for the Nazis, but a great leader in a rebellion against Hitler to save the Jews.(91/2)
6)Visualize- I can visualize when Gerhard avoids Hugo by basically setting up a routine that doesnt involve the sight of Hugo. I csn also visualize when Helmuth talks back to the Hitler Youth on the street. This is just another example of Helmuth being brave, and having leadership as a characteristic. (84/All)
Maddie Vesely- To answe your question Maddie, i agree. Also, Helmuth has the characteristic of a troublemaker ot rebel. Helmuth doesnt like to take orders from others so he does what he believes its right. I know many people that are like that. But my quastion is, Why is Gerhard so strong about his belief about the Nazis and why does he dislike Hugo so much?
Kristy Lee-7th Hour 1)Question- Is Helmuth going to get out of jail and join the Nazi army? (100/2)
2)Connect- My connection to this is when Hugo stumbles in the door and there’s a strange look of feverish excitement in his bloodshot eyes. This reminds me of my cousin when he came to our house all excited because he got picked for something special. (71/6)
3)Predict- I predict that Helmuth is going to break the Radio Law and listen to the radio at night so his mother and Hugo won’t hear. I also predict that Helmuth is going to put his family in great danger. (94/6)
4)Judge/Evaluate- I think that Hugo personality is sometimes unfair because he thinks bad of the Jews all the time, but does not see what really going on around in Germany and the Jews. Also, every time Hugo says something Helmuth tries to defend it because he knows it’s wrong. (70/2)
5)Visualize-I can visualize Rudi chasing all the other boys then fell through a window and breaking his wrist. (64/5) I can also visualize the two visitors from the Gestapo questioning Rudi and investing him with lots of question. (65/1)
6)Summarize- Helmuth and Rudi are going to be detective to solve a crime, but Rudi gets caught and send to the hospital to be asked question by two visitors from the Gestapo. (64/6) Also, the police are busy arresting the Jews and send to the train station and Hugo insults the Jews. Moreover, a young Jew named Herschel Grynszpan shot a Nazi official and more people in Germany thinks it’s the Jew causing all the trouble in Germany. (69/4)
Konner-Question Why do you think Helmuth is in so much shock the morning when Hugo eats his eggs and toast? Helmuth is in shock because when Hugo turns on the radio and hear news about the Jews taking over Germany. Hugo says "People do terrible things when they're angry. But Jews must learn that they can't get away with murder" (72/3). Helmuth knows that it's wrong to think about the Jews like that because he knows it's not right and it was not the Jews fault.
1. Infer-I infer that the building was high that Rudi fell out of. At first I was confused, I was like "How was he hurt that badly?" He must have been at least on the second floor of a building. That was bugging me for a while. 2. Question-Why did Rudi getting hurt cause the police station to stop working with him and Helmuth? 3. Connection-I remember when I was a kid, I always thought it would be cool to be a detective. Not the kind that Helmuth and Rudi were, though, I've never really been into the whole "murder scene" thing. Something like a robbery would be more interesting for me. 4. Predict-I think that the fact that Rudi got his wallet taken away is going to lead to something bad happening later on. 5. Judge/Evaluate-I am impressed at the fact that Helmuth bravely just walked in to the police building and asked to talk to the inspector. I would have been too shy. 6. Summarize-In this section, Helmuth and Rudi decided to become detectives. They marched down to the police office, and the inspector gave them a murder case. In a little while, they had enough evidence to guess who a suspect might be. However, Helmuth was nervous, because the inspector had the suspect arrested, without his guiltiness being proven. Helmuth was afraid that maybe the man was innocent, and the arrest was all his fault. Later on, Rudi gets injured, and in the hospital, some Gestapo find his detective ID card and start asking him questions. Then, they confiscate his wallet and head down to the police station to talk to the inspector. Helmuth and Rudi do not recieve another case from the inspector.
In response to Kristy-I agree with your prediction. Helmuth has been taking a lot of risks, like joining the Hitler group for the youth, and becoming a detective. I also think that he might put his family in danger.
Stephen Paoli-Hour 1 1. Question- I was wondering why Helmuth was so surprised when Hugo at his eggs and toast?
2.Connect- I had a connection to Hugo struggling into the room when he had a look of excitement in his eye. When I had just won State for racing the first thing I did was get up the I stumbled a little bit and went to hug my Dad.
3.Predict-A prediction for section 2 I had was for Helmuth to listen to the radio. I predicted this because once Gerhard brings it up to Helmuth it is obvious to tell Helmuth longs to use it. It turns out he never gets to use it because Gerhard locks it up.
4.Judge- I believe that it is unfair for Hugo to think so negatively of the Jews so much. I don’t think that he fully understands what is happening in Germany and with the Jews. What makes it right for him to judge them when hes not even 100% sure why he dislikes the Jews. Also because whenever Hugo says something negative Helmuth gets defevsive because he knows what he’s doing is wrong.
5. Build- Muttie transformed a lot from the beginning. For example, in the beginning she was 100% against Hitler, his rules, and his morals. Now, it seems like she could care less about the rules and what is going on with them.
6. Summarize-In section 2, Helmuth and Rudi made a decision to become inspectors. They traveled to the police office, and the head of the office gave them a case of murder. After some work, they had the mass of evidence to have an educated guess on a suspect. Helmuth was still unsure, because the head of the office had the suspect arrested, unjustly, without his true guiltiness being proven. Helmuth had a feeling that it would be terrible if the man was innocent, and the arrest was all because of him. After a while, Rudi gets hurt pretty badly, while he is still in the hospital, the Gestapo find his detective card, and suspiciously start interrogating him. They finally confiscate his wallet and travel to the police station to talk to the head of the office. After that, Helmuth and Rudi don’t get another case.
Question-Why does Helmuth want to break the law to listen to the shortwave radio? What is this going to do for him?92/3 Connect- There are people out there just like Hugo who listen to others and then get brainwashed to do what is wrong.69/last Predict-I think that Helmuth is planning on to help out the Jews because he is wanting to listen to the shortwave radio. Judge/evaluate-Gerhard doesn't want to be a Nazi but he wants to serve Germany in the war.97/last Infer-Helmuth is listing what he can't do and I know that most of the people that broke the laws in world war II were people who helped the Jews , so I guess that Helmuth is going to help the Jews.92/5 Determine Importance-"and look at the trouble those half million have coursed."(what Hugo says to the Jews)68/3
2)Predict- I predict that after Gerhard leaves to go to serve his time in the military Helmuth will eventually start listening to the foreign radio. (Pg. #91 Paragraph # 4)
3)Infer – As the story progresses and Helmuth learns more about the Nazis and what they do to his friends his opinion against Nazis becomes stronger and more resilient. Since we already know that he goes to prison we can infer that he does something that goes against the rules created by the Nazis.
4)Visualize- The scene where Gerhard brings in the foreign radio really makes me visualize how Helmuth reacts and what his actions are. It creates a very clear picture in my mind. (Pg. #91 Paragraph # 4)
5)Determine Importance- I think that the passage on page 97 is important to the rest of the story because Helmuth is telling his true feelings about how he feels about the Nazis. This shows how much he has changed from the little kid he was years ago.
6)Judge/Evaluate- I believe that Helmuth has changed as a character in what he thinks about the Nazis. But, he has been keeping his true feelings to himself and even joined the Hitler Youth Group in order to be inconspicuous.
In response to Emily's question I don't think that Rudi getting hurt made the police station stop working with them. It says in the book on page 68 on the top paragraph that the police station was too busy arresting Polish Jews.
1. Question: I was wondering if the investigation was what got Helmuth in trouble? (57/6) 2. Predict: I think Gerhard is going to get hurt or Killed. (76/1) 3. Judge/Evaluate: Brother Worbs is trying to show them that many people can feel the same way about something. (89/2) 4. Infer: Robin Hood got in trouble a lot I think the same is going to happen to them. (57/4) 5. Visualize: When Hulmuth comes around the destroyed block I can see it clearer than other parts of the book. (73/2) 6. Determine Importance: The last paragraph on Paige 78 helps use keep the time line straight with the updates of were Hitler is and what he is doing. (78/3)
Chaly i like your prediction and think it is very likely to happen
1. Question: Why would Hulmuth disobeyed his brother's request for not using the radio but instead he used it when he knows that something bad will happened? (92-94 All)
2. Connect: When Hulmuth disobeyed Gerhard's request to not listen to the rola radio its like when my little brother's disobeyed me for something I ask them to get me when I busy. (94 Last)
3. Predict: I think Hulmuth will disobeyed orders from the Hitler Youth Club and do other UN-German things to show that he cannot obey their rules anymore. (94 Last)
4. Judge/Evaluate: Even though Hulmuth won't agree with Gerhard and won't tell him, I think that in Gerhard's heart, he already knew that Hulmuth wouldn't listen to him already.
5. Build: I think that if Brother Worbs is going to keep saying what he thinks even though it's right, he has to keep it to himself and can't let Nazi's found out that he doesn't agree with them. (89-90 All)
6. Summarize: • Hulmuth went to celebrate New years eve and brother Worbs was wishing something that he shouldn't in front to the Nazis. • After a the New years it takes us back to where Hulmuth is in jail. • After the jail and back to the past of Hulmuth's life, Gerhard came home with a short wave radio which he bought at the black market.
In response to Nicole Hardman I agree with your prediction because I also that Hulmuth will get hurt or even killed. Because Hulmuth is now not obeying all the Nazi rules.
Ben Przybylski 7 hour 1 question: why can’t they listen to short wave radios if they only listen to German stations? (92, 3)
2 connection: I have been banned from thing just like Helmuth is banned from thing too. (92, 5)
3 prediction: I think that Helmuth will listen to the radio when Gerhard leaves. (92, 5)
4 judge/evaluate: I think that Helmuth thinks that he can do whatever he wants when nobody is watching. Also I think that he is sneaky and doesn’t like Hitler or the laws. (92, 5)
5 build: in the beginning Gerhard didn’t like Hitler at all but I think that he is starting to like him. (92, 5)
6 visualize: I can see Gerhard taking the radio and throwing back in the closet and then locking it. (92, 3)
The person before me you should put your name and to answer your question he doesn’t know that something bad will happen and he wants to know the true.
Katie Whitman 3rd Hour 1. Question: Why does Gerhard suddenly care so much about Nazi and Hitler stuff when he was so against it before? 2. Connection: There are restrictions for Helmuth and us but our restrictions are not as heavy or ridiculous as those placed on his age group at that time. 92/5 3. Prediction: I think something bad will happen related to the radio, which is illegal. 4. Judge/Evaluate: Helmuth must have a difficult life if he sticks to his ways of “Supporter by day, hater by night.” He has to pretend to support the Nazis and Hitler at school and in public, and not during the nighttime. 92/5 5. Build: Gerhard seems to like/support Hitler ever since he was sent to the camp where he began pre-military training. 92/5 6. Visualize: I can see when Gerhard locks away the radio and the expression of disappointment on Helmuth’s face.
Melanie Geier – 7th hour mayo 1) Question- why would Helmuth risk his and his family’s life just to listen to a radio? 2) Connect- I can connect with Helmuth because my older sister tells me what to do and criticizes what I do kind of like what Gerhard does to Helmuth. 3) Predict- I predict that the people who came to Helmuth’s cell will tell him that he has so and so days till something happens. 4) Judge/Evaluate- I think Hugo treats Mutti like he owns her and how he tells her when they leave, I think it’s just rude and disrespectful. 5) Build- Mutti use to be against the war but now ever since she had been together with Hugo she is carefree and goes with the flow of the war. 6) Summarize- Gerhard comes home and tells Helmuth to stay out of the closet with the banned things, Gets drafted. Mutti goes with Hugo after the celebration for Gerhard. Helmuth watches as his brother packs and get ready to leave, watches him leave. Helmuth has people in his cell hoping that they will let him go. In response to to Katie's question, i think Gerhard is obeying Hitler's orders because he doesn't want to get hurt or in trouble.

ReplyDelete1. Question- why does Gerhard come back home for a little while from war (93,3)
2. Predict- something bad will happen to Gerhard (99,4)
3. Judge evaluate- helmuth don’t like mums boyfriend Hugo (81,3)
4. Build- helmuth worries and complains a lot (94,5)
5. Visualize- I can see the destroyed Jewish buildings and stuff (73,1)
6. Summarize- Gerhard comes home and he has a shortwave radio and helmuth wants it but Gerhard won’t give it to him so helmuth says something mean to him pages 90-100

ReplyDelete1) Question-Why doesn't Helmuth just do what he is told so he doesn't get yelled at? I think the answer could be that he is afraid that he will get yelled at for saying his own opinion about how he hates the Nazi’s. (All/all)
2) Connect-In this book it talks about how Gerhard goes into the army. This reminds me about my sister who has a boyfriend that's in the Marine Corps. (75/4)
3)Predict-I predict the Helmuth want to start a revolution because he does not like the Nazi's and does not like to do what’s his is told and say what to say and all that in this book you can finger that he wants to just say what HE thinks and what HE wants. (110/3)
4)Judge/Evaluate-I evaluate that Gerhard is growing up fast and wants to help serve by going into the army same with Helmuth by doing government stuff for his job. I judge that Hugo is just pushing Helmuth and the rest of the family into doing this entire even if they don’t like it. (75/4)
5) Build-In the begging of the book I thought Helmuth’s real father was a Jew and that’s how he ended up going to jail.

ReplyDelete1) Question- Why do you think Helmuth is in so much shock the morning when Hugo eats his eggs and toast?
Kristy Lee-7th Hour
ReplyDelete1)Question- Is Helmuth going to get out of jail and join the Nazi army?
Konner-Question
Why do you think Helmuth is in so much shock the morning when Hugo eats his eggs and toast?
Helmuth is in shock because when Hugo turns on the radio and hear news about the Jews taking over Germany. Hugo says "People do terrible things when they're angry. But Jews must learn that they can't get away with murder" (72/3). Helmuth knows that it's wrong to think about the Jews like that because he knows it's not right and it was not the Jews fault.

ReplyDelete1.
Stephen Paoli-Hour 1
ReplyDelete1.

ReplyDeleteQuestion-Why does Helmuth want to break the law to listen to the shortwave radio? What is this going to do for him?92/3
Connect- There are people out there just like Hugo who listen to others and then get brainwashed to do what is wrong.69/last
Predict-I think that Helmuth is planning on to help out the Jews because he is wanting to listen to the shortwave radio.
Judge/evaluate-Gerhard doesn't want to be a Nazi but he wants to serve Germany in the war.97/last

ReplyDelete1)Question – Why doesn’t Inspector Becker ever contact Helmuth again? (Pg. # 67 Paragraph # 6)

2. Predict: I think Gerhard is going to get hurt or Killed. (76/1)
3. Judge/Evaluate: Brother Worbs is trying to show them that many people can feel the same way about something. (89/2)
4. Infer: Robin Hood got in trouble a lot I think the same is going to happen to them. (57/4)
5. Visualize: When Hulmuth comes around the destroyed block I can see it clearer than other parts of the book. (73/2)
6. Determine Importance: The last paragraph on Paige 78 helps use keep the time line straight with the updates of were Hitler is and what he is doing. (78/3)

1. Question: Why would Hulmuth disobeyed his brother's request for not using the radio but instead he used it when he knows that something bad will happened? (92-94 All)
ReplyDelete2.

2. Connection: There are restrictions for Helmuth and us but our restrictions are not as heavy or ridiculous as those placed on his age group at that time. 92/5
5. Build: Gerhard seems to like/support Hitler ever since he was sent to the camp where he began pre-military training. 92/5
6. Visualize: I can see when Gerhard locks away the radio and the expression of disappointment on Helmuth’s face.
