1)Question- How long until Helmuth can't take any more of all the Nazi stuff? (107/3)
2)Connect- Helmuth taking out the radio when Oma and Opa are asleep reminds me of my own mischief. Often in past summers I would wait until everyone was asleep so I could use the computer- even though I was told not to do so. (102/3)
3)Predict- Is it Helmuth's paper that stands out? I think so. (It is). (105/3)
4)Build- Helmuth, though quiet, is quite gutsy. It's very risky to be tuning into other radio stations. (103/5)
5)Infer- So Helmuth goes to jail, we know that much. He talks about speaking out after reading Spirit and Action. Does he speak his mind? (110/5)
6)Determine Importance- Helmuth is thinking of things Heinrich Mann said. "No one is willing to go agaisnt the current, to take a stand". I believe this will be one of the many things to push him to speak out. (111/8)
Andrew, I think at times all of us don't want to listen. Whether it's right or wrong, we all tune things out and do what we want instead.
I agree with what you said about Helmuth and the things that Heinrich Mann said. He must have thought "No one is going against the crowd. I'm going to be that person to go against it first."
Katie Whitman 3rd Hour 1. Question: Why did Duwer decide to go against Helmuth when he was helping him distribute the fliers to people? 2. If Helmuth gets caught, Hugo could have varied reactions. He might be sad, mad, or disappointed. 6. Determine Importance: Like Hailey said, Helmuth thinks deeply about what Heinrich Mann says. I think he will speak out, and hopefully not get caught (we know he does though). 111/8

Chaly Xiong- 1st Hour 1)Question- What makes Helmuth want to listen to the foreign radio? (Pg. # 102 Paragraph # 3)
2)Predict- I predict that Helmuth will share the radio with his friends since they all have the same viewpoint towards the Nazis.
3)Infer- I believe that Helmuth will get put into jail for his pamphlets because these pamphlets denounce the Nazi government and go against the laws. (Pg. # 126 Paragraph # 1)
4)Visualize- On page 127 paragraph 8 I can visually see the three friends making the promise to say no names because it shows there bonds as friends.
5)Determine Importance- In the passage on page 135 paragraph 3 the passage is important because it shows Helmuth’s motives for the pamphlet campaign and why.
6)Judge/Evaluate- I believe after the story Hugo changed for the better as he saw why Helmuth did what he did and the consequences that he faced. Hugo becomes a nicer and more thought out person than the one who believed in the Nazis.
In response to Nicole's question, yes, the pamphlets are one of the main reasons why he got in trouble. Also, I believe that listening to the radio also got him into trouble.

Alexa Billeb- 4th Hour English 1. Question- My first strategy is a question. My question is: Why was Helmuth telling the truth when he knew it would get him into trouble? ( 163/1 )
2. Predict- In my other strategy I predicted. I predicted that in the beginning that Helmuth was going to get executed. Later on now I found out my prediction was correct. He did get executed in the end of the book. ( 165/ Last Paragraph )
3. Infer- I inferred or I knew that most people in the time that Hitler was around got either sentenced to prison or concentration camps or even executed for breaking the law. ( 162/2) 4. Visualize- I can see all the four boys (Helmuth, Rudi, Karl, and Gerhard) sitting in the back of the van hand cuffed each to a Nazi Soldier. ( 154/5)
5. Determine Importance- The speech or the last words to the court hearing Helmuth said was all true and very important as well. Even though the guards hated it and said it was a lie I think they only got upset because they almost knew it was true and they didn’t want to give out that it was true and a young boy was correct. ( 163/1)
6. Summarize- Helmuth and Rudi and Karl all listened to the BBC radio for many nights. The boys make flyers to put around the town about the lies of Nazis and the war. Helmuth makes a new friend who sounds like he wants to be a part of Helmuths group and wants to listen to the BBC radio and wants to help make flyer but really sets a trap and turns Helmuth in. The boys are sentence to court and Helmuths three friends get sent to prison for a few years but Helmuth gets sentence to Execution but doesn’t know when he will be executed.
Kyle-- To answer you question i think Helmuth wants to listen to the BBC Radio because he wants to figure out the truth about the War and the Nazis and maybe even Hitler. I also think he is brave for listening to the radio. But sadly he gets turned in by a " friend ".
1) Visualize- I can visualize when all the boys(Helmuth, Rudy, and Karl) sitting at the table listening to BBC on the short wave radio and setting up a plan to hand out the leaflets to destroy Hitlers dictatorship. (124/2)
2) Determine Importance- I believe that the words that Helmuth writes in the end of his letter are extrememly important because its something he has said before in the book, so it gives you a hint of what is going to happen next for Helmuth...death.(165/ALL)
3)Question- My question is: why did Helmuth take all of the blame for writing the leaflets? Obviously Helmuth is brave and a stays true to his friends. Helmuth has proven his leadership, not as a NAZI but as a rebel.(160/ALL)
4) Predict- I predict that Helmuth will ventually die in a concentration camp after a year or so, that is if he doesnt get executed early.(164-165/ALL)
5)Connect- I make a connection whenever Helmuth breaks the German laws and listens to the short wave radio because it reminds if when my cousins a bunch of my friends took my dads old radio and walked all over the neighborhood playin our music loud and having fun.(102/3)
6) Judge/Evaluate- Helmuth is a brave human being. Hekmuth proves his leadership and braveness by taking all of the blame for writing the leaflets. Helmuth knows he did the right thing, even though the NAZIs despise him.(160/ALL)
Alexa-- To answer your question, I believe Helmuth knew the right thing to do, that is why he took all the blame for writing the leaflets.
1. Question: Why did Duwer decide to go against Helmuth when he was helping him distribute the fliers to people?
2. Predict-I believed that in the beginning, Helmuth would eventually get executed. Now that I have read on, it turns out that would I predicted turned out to be true. He did end up getting executed eventually.
3. Infer- I inferred that the people during the time Hitler ruled and his laws were put into action by sentencing people to concentration camps, prison or even going to the extreme and could potentially get executed for breaking a wide range of laws, that may not even be fair or serious.
4. Visualize- What I thought I visualized very well, was when the four boys in the back of the truck were handcuffed and secured to a Nazi officer.
5. Connect- When Helmuth took the radio out while Oma and Opa were asleep honestly reminded me of some trouble my sister recently got into. If she would misbehave, my mother would take away her phone, and in between the times when my mom would come upstairs she would text her friends and not get caught.
6. Summarize- Basically Helmuth is forced to go to a training camp, where people are brainwashed to believe lies to prove Hitler is right, and that the Jews are to blame for everything, even though they are basically just a scapegoat.
Question- Why wouldn’t Fikeis come to the truth of the Fruher and his faults? But then again as being such a high ranking elite, he must have succumbed to brainwash or other forms of political deception. (160,3) Connect- I found a similarity between Helmuth and myself. If I was in any situation I’d think about my friends first because if they are getting in trouble for what I did, then of course I’ll take blame. Although honestly I don’t think I could have taken a death sentence like Helmuth did. (N/A) Predict- I predict that if all the questions are going to be Nazi related, that Helmuth doesn’t stand a chance even if he did back down from his plan. If I don’t like something I usually don’t pay any attention to it. (158,2) Infer- After all that Helmuth has done, just that line alone and the irony that surrounds it is astonishing. We all knew Helmuth was going to die, but the fact that he still believed they would meet. Now that I think about it, he knew he was going to die, but did he mean they would meet in Heaven? That I cannot tell, but I could quickly relate this to Anne Frank when she said that someday she hoped to visit the world or become a writer. Except she didn’t know she was going to die. Helmuth did. (164,4) Imagery- While the guards are taking Helmuth to his death, I could imagine the court in the night as he was lead to the chamber. And since we read the book from the start I could remember what I saw when they were just little kids all in bed during the cold night. Together. (164,4) Determine Importance- While reading this section I guess one could discuss either his memories or that the whole “Life flashes before your eyes” event. Either way he is going back to a time when he was calm. Even through death he sought the memories that would take his to heaven. He wanted to go back. (165,1) Stephen, Duwer most likely went against Helmuth in the beginning because honestly if it was either life or death, you’d want to live. I know it sounds mean but you cannot really blame him, Helmuth still thought of him as a friend, because he knew it was for that reason.
Imagery: I can just picture the three boys listening to the radio secretly. (124/4) Question: My question is how can Helmuth be so brave? I could never do half of the things he did. (126/8) Connection: I know I've been in situations before where I had to keep secrets, and then my frinds found out. (123/3) Determine Importance: I think it's important that the boys decide to do the whole "no names" thing. (127/5) Judge/evaluate: I can't believe the Nazi's were gullible enough to let Helmuth distract them. Predict: In the beginning, I predicted that he might get arrested for the whole detective thing. Now I know that's not true.
In response to Alex: I totally agree on your inference on dramatic irony. It's very true.
1.) Question: Why is Helmuth doing more speaking than Rudi, Karl, and Duwer when they all took part going against the Nazi? (163/3)
2.)Predict: I predict that Helmuth is going to get kill and never see his friends again because he spoke against what he believe in instead of being quite. (164/4)
3.) Judge/Evaluate: Throughout the story Helmuth has grown stronger and fought more against the Nazi to prove that they are lying and are actually losing the war. (163/3)
4.) Build: The story has gotten more interesting and has more action, but turned out to be a sad ending. (157/2)
5.) Visualize: I can picture Helmuth standing and getting ready to be killed. Also, I can picture the brusque pound of feet and the jangle of keys against the metal. I can also picture the two guards entering the room Helmuth is in and telling him “It is time.” (164/6)
6.) Summarize: Helmuth is listening to the BBC news every night. First, Helmuth comes upon a closet with books written by Jews and was suppose to be burned and he stole some of them and showed it to Rudi who thinks Helmuth is crazy. That’s when Helmuth start to feel a strong pull that the Nazi’s has been lying to them and go against the Nazi. Second, Duwer told on Helmuth and is capture by the police, which Helmuth is taken to court for his crime. Lastly, Helmuth writes a letter to his family at home saying that he has no regrets and is going after writing the letter to his family.
In response to Emily: I agree with your connection and it is also the same connection that I have with my friends as well. Also, to your prediction Helmuth did get arrested, but is sent to court to determined his crime about going against the Nazi's.
Samantha Gleason 7th hour 1) Question- who told on helmuth and why would someone do such a thing? (p.145) 2)Connect- I can connect when my cosine got put in jail for supplely for vandalizing a car which he did not do he took the blame for his friends connect means – similarities 3) Predict- I think that this story will be going on for everyone to hear the truth and horrible story/life. Predict mean what think will happen 4) Infer- when helmuth gets captured just like the diary of Anne frank captured. Infer is when you compare things that you are reading or know about. 5) Visualize- to create an image (mental picture) I could visualize helmuth siting in the jail cell and alone and getting hit also having to stand. 6) Summarize- retell the chapter helmuth was handing out leaflets and got caught and sentenced for life. He died to/ for helping people to know the truth. 7) use-fix-up techniques- if you become confused what did you do. if I was confused I reread and just stopped and thought about it.
Samantha Gleason 7th hour Kristy i like the fact that you added alot of details well i think that he is doing that to inform them that he needs/ wants to take full blame so only one person gets in to trouble also because the making of leaflets takes place at helmuths home.
1) Question: Why would Helmuth want to break the law and risk his family just to listen to the radio? (102/6
2) Connect: I can connect to how Helmuth is saying he does not know why the BBC tells the actual losses and the RRG does not it is the same way with some of the news today. (103/4)
3) Judge: Helmuth is a good writer I think that if Helmuth wanted to he could easily write for a cause or write books for entertainment. (105/2)
4) Visualize: I can visualize Helmuths face redden when his paper starts to get read out loud because it happens to me a lot when a teacher does that to me. (105/4)
5) Use Fix Up Techniques: I had to re-read the part on page 143 paragraph 3 because it had not made sense to me until I found out what all of the words in German meant and I went back and re-read.
Samantha I wonder the same thing about people and although he was his friend he thought he was doing the right thing for Germany. Although some people do not see what will not see the big picture of what they were doing. Gerhard I do not think knew what was going to happen to Helmuth. That is why someone would do something like that.

2)Judge/Evaluate: I think that Helmuth is doing the right thing but I think that he doesn’t believe that he is going to get caught. (132,3)
3)Build: I know that most people in the time that were around Hitler were either sentenced to prison, concentration camps, or even executed for breaking the law, so you always had to be law abiding and this proves my point even further. (162,2)
4)Visualize: I can picture Helmuth’s face turn red when his paper starts to be read aloud because I would do the same thing if that would happen to me. (105,4)
5)Infer: I think that Helmuth’s paper is the one that is picked and that stands out. (105,3)
6)Determine Importance: I think that all of the information that was put into Helmuth’s paper was very important because he is kind of foreshadowing to his death just like he was at the beginning of the book. (165, all paragraphs)
Dylan, I also think that Helmuth is a good writer. It is really rare at that time that he could write as well as he can.

Question: My question is how can Helmuth be so brave? I could never do half of the things he did. (126/8)
Connection: I know I've been in situations before where I had to keep secrets, and then my frinds found out. (123/3)
Determine Importance: I think it's important that the boys decide to do the whole "no names" thing. (127/5)
Judge/evaluate: I can't believe the Nazi's were gullible enough to let Helmuth distract them.
Predict: In the beginning, I predicted that he might get arrested for the whole detective thing. Now I know that's not true.
In response to Alex: I totally agree on your inference on dramatic irony. It's very true.

ReplyDelete1.) Question: Why is Helmuth doing more speaking than Rudi, Karl, and Duwer when they all took part going against the Nazi?

ReplyDelete1) Question- who told on helmuth and why would someone do such a thing? (p.145)
2)Connect- I can connect when my cosine got put in jail for supplely for vandalizing a car which he did not do he took the blame for his friends connect means – similarities
3) Predict- I think that this story will be going on for everyone to hear the truth and horrible story/life.
Predict mean what think will happen
4) Infer- when helmuth gets captured just like the diary of Anne frank captured.

ReplyDelete1) Question: Why would Helmuth want to break the law and risk his family just to listen to the radio?

ReplyDelete1) Question: What makes Helmuth want to listen to the foreign radio? I think he is really brave for doing that. (102,3)
