The Cage - Section 3

    1) Connect – The work and conditions that Riva has to do reminds me of the coal miners that worked in America and how they risked their lives every day by working in the mines for long shifts at a time.(183, 2-3)

    2) Predict – I think that the commandant sent the two sisters who stole bread to be killed, not to receive a punishment like the girls thought. (191, 2-3)

    3) Judge/Evaluate – I think that although the guard is an S.S. officer, she has had a change of heart about the Jews in realizing that they are just human beings like she is and yet they are treated horribly. I think Riva is right to trust her and consider her almost as a friend who will help her out with her health.
    (213, 1)

    4) Visualize – This is a very sad and heartbreaking scene. The commandant caught two sisters stealing potato skins. Instead of whipping them herself, she makes Faigele whip her sister Chanele. I can picture crying, the deathly crack of the whip, and the commandant’s bitter urgings to whip harder. (190, 1-6)

    5) Determine Importance – This passage is really thought provoking to me because I think that identity is very important to everyone. Riva is ordered to forget her name and only remember her number. I think that it is very wrong and cruel to tell someone to forget who they are.
    (175, 1-3)

    6) Summarize – Chapter 33
-Riva starts work in the mines.
-Riva is struggling with the conditions.
    -Riva meets Rosa.
-Riva starts to write poetry on a bag that Rosa got from a kind guard.

    1) Judge/Evaluate- On page 196, paragraph 1 when Riva first arrived at the new work camp she was feeling so alone and in desperation. Then when she met Rosa who found her paper and a pencil so Riva could keep on writing poetry, made her happy again and gave her a new reason to live. The poetry that Riva wrote gave everyone in the camp a new hope and strength to work each day, and not give up. (196/1)

    2) Build- When first Riva was placed under the care of the “Overseer” , she was scared because she had complete control over her. But when Riva fell on the road and had a hard time walking, it was evident that she had a heart. This was proven to a farther extent when the Overseer was running around all day looking for a hospital or clinic that would help Riva. (213/1)

    3) Connect- On page 228 paragraph 4, when Riva was torn between weather to stay and rest in the sickroom, or to get up and go to the celebration. Both would cause her trouble because staying so long could get her in trouble and getting up would cause the commander to make her go back to work. This made me have a text to text connection between this and when Mr. Van Daan was trying to convince Mr. Frank to answer the ringing telephone. Mr. Frank was torn between weather or not it was Miep or if it was the Nazi's. (228/4)

    4) Visualize- When Riva climbs into her new straw bunk, unable to sit up or move, it makes me think of an animal in it's cage. A cage that is to small for it to live in let alone sleep in. Riva is like an animal unable to live, breath or feel free. Unable to express emotion, or even to think about herself. (175/6)

    5) Determine Importance- “ I speak to my friend of tomorrow of a future we'll build once again” (195), is a strong and hopeful passage. This passage helps Riva remind herself and others that there is always hope. You don't look at the bad things of tomorrow, but better yet of the good future that tomorrow will bring. (194/4)

    6) Summary- Chapter 46
Riva arrives at yet another camp.
Riva is forced to dig deep trenches for the soldiers.
    It is May 3rd 1945, Riva's birthday
A guard tells Riva that it is her last birthday, she will not live to see her next.

Rachel--- I believe that in your “Determine Importance” was very moving. I never took time to actually think about what this actually meant. You are very right, it is wrong for someone to be forced to forget who they are and replace that with a number.

1- Infer: 190/7 It must have been so hard for the girl to have to whip her sister. I cannot believe how much pain that must have caused her. And then for the Madam Commandment to just laugh afterwards is terrible.
2- Question: My only real question about section 3 was that the ending confused me. What was the importance of the Russian leader coming into camp?
3- Connection: 210/2 I had a connection to when the nurse was yelling at the German doctors. Because she still had to treat them with respect but also had to get her point across and as a kid growing up, a lot of us do this to our parents.
4- Determine Importance: 211/2 I think it was important that they were getting stopped from entering the hospitals because it showed that they weren't wanted and it gave me a real sense of how they were being treated at that time, even without much description.
5- Judge/Evaluate: Page 224 I was surprised as to how much the medical student cared for Riva. Like when she taught her how to use her off hand to do work and write her poems. It was really cool that she did that.
6- Summarize: Section 3 was my favorite section because it showed a Jew's struggle with and injury and just struggle in general through the concentration camps. It made me feel blessed with what i can do now and that this hasn't happened to our generation, and i hope it stays that way.

    1) Question- Why is the nurse being so nice to Riva, even though she is sick? (228,8)

    2) Prediction- On page 256, paragraph 1, I predicted that Riva was going to be killed when they had all of the girls go outside to go to the woods.

    3) Judge/Evaluate- On page 175, paragraph 1, I didn't think it was right for them to make them have a number. They were told to forget their name.

    4) Visualize- On page 190, I could visualize the two girls getting yelled at for stealing potato skins. Then the sister having to whip her other sister.

    5) Use Fix- Up Techniques- I re-read the page 260 |(the last chapter), because at the first read through I didn't realize that it was a flashback.

    6) Summarize- In chapter 47, the Russians came to save the Jews. They succeeded. It was their first group they found still alive.

Brady, you forgot to make a comment to the person who wrote before you, Mrs. Mayo will probably dock points for that..

1Question I wonder if those two girls’ faige and chane died because of what they did and then she went crazy. They took her and her sister away. They never came back in the book.
2connect when she ask to go to the bathroom and the Nazi said no. it is the same when I would ask to go to the bathroom at school and they would say no.
3predict before I read the rest of the book I thought she might die and here poetry might be found by someone.
4judge/evaluate the two girls faige and chane stole the food and got caught and know the Germans are wiping every one. They are not feeding them that night.
5infer the Jews would wright poetry in camps secretly. I know that Jews like Anne frank did that.
6visualize I can see fiage wiping chane and crying and then out of random she is going insane then they both are being carried away.

Question- on page 256, I am kind of confused on what the Nazi’s were planning on doing with the Jews in the woods. Were they running away from the Russians, or were they planning on taking the Jews there to kill them? I was kind of confused at this part in the book, and had to read it over a few times.
Predict- page 257- I think they will be completely free, and after this they will be able to go back home. Several people are shouting, “Were Free! Were Free!” and running around screaming. If they weren’t actually free, I don’t think the Nazi’s would allow this.
Judge/Evaluate- Page 234; This is the Part in the book when the Strict Nazi lady in control of the barracks comes into Riva’s Room, and gives her a notebook so she can write her poetry. I think this is a very small act of kindness, but symbolizes something huge. This is showing that this awful, cruel woman still has some feelings left in her cold heart, and that she has a SMALL amount of sympathy. I think that she is as mean as she is, just so she is able to survive. Most people would not act the way they did, if their lives weren’t on the line.
Visualize- Page 259; This scene is very dramatic, and very powerful. This is when the Russians find the Jews in the barracks, after several days of struggling to stay alive. This scene has a bittersweet ending. It makes you feel happy that they are finally being rescued, but sad that they had to go through all that. It puts a very depressing picture into your head of how traumatic these past few months must have been for them.
Determine Importance- Page 234; Again, This is when The Lady in charge gives Riva the notebook. I think this is a very powerful scene, and it really has a big impact on Riva, and the reader.
    Summarize- chapter 47:
    * The Jews are taken out into the middle of the woods.
    * The officers and people in charge run away.
    * They walk back to camp.
    * Russian soldiers find them, and they are taken to safety. (Those who survived.)

Kelby; I also had this same question on whether or not the girls made it out. I think it is safe to say that they were either gassed to death, or whipped. I also agree with what you said about her dying and her poetry being found, because that is what I thought was going to happen too.

    1) Question- I wonder what happened to the girls that were taken away at the camp? Were they killed or taken to another camp? (178/2)

    2) Predict- I predict that Riva and the other group of girls that can’t work at the factory will have to clean something such as a bathroom since they aren’t able to use the tools. (183/2)

    3) Judge/Evaluate- I am very surprised that one of the foremen at the factory gave Rosa a piece of bread. I didn’t think they would be nice there. (185/8)

    4) Visualize- I could visualize the two sisters getting yelled at for stealing and Chane having to whip Chanele. I would never be able to hurt my sister like that. (190/1)

    5) Determine Importance- I think the poem Riva writes is very touching and I can’t see how in this situation she remains positive and keeps her spirits up for the future. I also think that they poem speaks for everyone that was ever sent to a concentration camp. (94/3)

    6) Summarize- Chapter 38- Riva gets a cut from a bucket at work. She notices swelling in her finger and goes to the camp doctor. The doctor says she has blood poisoning and must go see a professional doctor in town. They go to many hospitals and nobody will treat her since she is a Jew. At that time all Riva wants to do is sleep.

Abby- In response to your question they Nazi’s were planning to kill all of the Jews in the woods. It just happened that the Russians were behind them and they all had to flee the scene and left the Jews standing in the middle of the road. I have to agree; this part was a little confusing

Visualize Page 164 paragraph 1- ,I can visualize the nasty smell of the burning bodies and the smoke coming from the smoke stacks. I could imagine how bad it would be to hear those rumors, and the things it would probably make you think inside your head

Connection page 180 paragraph 1- I can connect to the Jews walking in the dark and only having bike headlights to light the way. Its almost like walking around town during the night and mostly the only thing to light the way are cars

Question page 256- I was a little confused when they were marching away. Were they going to kill all of them, or were they running from the Russians?

Prediction page 257- I predict that the Russians will liberate them and take them away from the Nazis. Several people are yelling, “Were Free! Were Free!” . If they weren’t actually free, I don’t think the Nazi’s would let this go.

Infer page 257-I infer that most of the girls will get away safe do to the help of the Russians and also they will all maybe one day be reunited with their family members

judge/evaluate Whole Book- I believe that the Nazis can probably be considered one the most horrible groups of all time. The pain and suffering that they caused on the Jews was literally disgusting and wrong. I hope that something like this will never ever happen again in history

    1) connection: on page 183 paragraph 2 i made a connection to the horrible conditions that Riva had to work in to the people who had to work in the suffocating factories in the north when the United states first began.

2)prediction: on page 256 paragraph 1 I thought that they were going to punish Riva or maybe even kill her because no one was there to stop them or protect her.

3)Evaluate: on page 196 paragraph one I thought it really showed that Riva really puts her feelings into writing and it helps her get through tough things. So when Rosa got her the pencil and the bag it helped her and I also thought that it really brought all the girls together and helped them all relate to eachother better.

4)Visualize: on page 190 paragraph 1-6ish I could really see the commandant making the sister whip the other sister and I could hear the sounds Riva explained the sister doing the whipping was making. It made me think of if I had to do that to my sister how horrible it would be.\

5)Importance: On page 234 I thought it was very important because Riva realized that even the cruelest people have human inside them and have feelings even when it doesn't seem like it.

6)Question: on page 253 paragraph 3 the guard starts yelling at Riva but it never really mentions what she's doing that made him stop and notice her. Was she not working or what was she doing? It never really mentions it.

In reply to Ryan: I think they were going to kill them, but they were also running from the Russians like when the commandant says each of them will die before the Nazis I think they were going to kill them before the Russians got to them to liberate them.

  12. Emily Vesper- 7th Hour English

    1) Question: On page 234, paragraph 2 I wondered why the commandant came into the doctor’s office with a club in her hand acting like she was going to beat Riva. I guess maybe she didn’t want anyone to know that she was being nice to a Jew.

    2) Connect: I had a text to text connection to The Diary of Anne Frank. Besides the first and last chapter, the entire book, The Cage, was a flash back just like The Diary of Anne Frank. In The Cage, the first and last chapter took place after the holocaust had happened. In The Diary of Anne Frank, this also happened just in the first and last scenes.

    3) Predict: In the 5th paragraph on page 236, I predicted that Riva was going to get killed when the Nazi pulled her from the group of girls. Since Riva was so weak from being sick, I thought Riva was going to be killed because she looked and acted too weak to work.

    4) Visualize: In paragraph 4 on page 181, I imagined what the factory looked like to all of the girls. I saw a huge warehouse looking building packed inside with tables and large machines. Everything was shiny and silver, and looked brand new compared to what Riva was used to in the barraks.

    5) Determine Importance: On page 217 in the 3rd paragraph, Riva referred to her home as the cage. I thought this was important because this was the first time Riva ever called the barraks (her home), the cage. Since this is the title of the book, I figured that when Riva called her home, the cage, it must have meant that Riva realized she may never leave that place.

    6) Summarize: Chapter 36
o Riva continues to express her feelings and thoughts on brown paper bags.
o Riva reads her poems and goes over what happens throughout the days.
o A girl name Sara, tells everyone it is Hanukkah.
o Riva remembers times of her past Hanukkahs, and everyone starts signing a song about the special holiday until the guard pounds on the door, ordering everyone to stop.

Brooklynn, the part where the guard was yelling was kind of confusing. I think that the guard was not just yelling at Riva, but at the whole group. The Nazis were all panicked because the Russians were attacking them. The Nazis were trying to kill the Jews before the Russians could free them. When the commandant gave Riva the journal it was a really important moment. Your comment about the cruelest people even have feelings is really true. I think that commandant liked Riva from the beginning, because she took Riva to the doctor numerous times and also gave her the journal.

1)Question- On page 256, the Nazis were taking the Jews to the woods, but it was not clear for what the purpose was. Did the Nazis leave because they were scared of the Germens? Were the Nazis planning to kill the Jews? Was this a trick on the Jews by the Nazis? (Pg.256)

2)Predict- On page 257, the Nazis left the Jews all along with no given instructions. The Jews were left to figure out what the whole thing was about. Some said that it is a trick so the Nazis would have a reason to beat or even kill them. Others said that it was their chance to become free. I think that the Nazis ran away because they knew that the invasion had started and the Germans were coming. I predict that all the Jewish girls including Riva will survive, for the Germans will come find them. I meanly predict this because the book started of with Riva telling her daughter her story in the future meaning that she had to survive. (Pg.257)

3)Visualize- On pages 188-191, Faigele and Chanele get punished for stealing potato peals. Faigele had to whip her sister Chanele in front of everyone. I can clearly visualize the whole event like a picture slide. When I was reading the part I pictured a group of Jewish girls watching as the two sisters got beaten. I visualized Faigeles face every time she whip Chanele. I visualized Faigeles face saying sorry to Chanele without words, for she would have gotten beaten more. In my mind, the Commandant kept on saying “harder, harder.” I also visualized that the girls watching had horrified and silence faces. (Pg. 188-191)

4)Judge/Evaluate- In chapter 44, Katia lets Riva take a bath. Katia also gave her extra mashed potatoes, cooked vegetables, and bread ounces in a while. Katia let Riva take a bath while she was watching the door, that right their shows how kind and caring she is. Katia put her life on risk to give Riva more food and baths. Katia also fixed Rivas shoes with bandages, still knowing that she could get in trouble.(Ch.44)

5)Connect – On page183, Riva was put to work in a hiding tunnel. I had a connection with Riva’s work with the work that Americans did in the gold mines. I had the connection because both Riva’s work and the miner’s work had horrible work conditions, for they had many of the same work conditions. They both had to dig to make the tunnels bigger, and they both had very bad work conditions. (Pg.183)

6)Summarize- Chapter 33 starts of with Riva having a hard time with the work conditions, for she had to go to the bathroom but was not allowed to and was forced to go in the tunnel. While all the girls were walking back from the factory, Riva met a girl named Rosa. Rosa worked in the factory and was given some bread in a brown bag. Riva took the brown bag so she could right poetry, but she later realized that she did not have a pencil. The chapter ended with Riva waiting for Rosa to get a pencil. (Ch.33)

Emily Vesper- That is a really good question. I think the answer to the question is because she didn’t want the other commandants or anyone else to know that she was giving Riva a book to write in, for Jews were not allowed to have any educational stuff.

Question- Why would a Nazi let a Jewish girl go to the hospital? 203-3
Connection- me and Riva both like bread and jam. 202-2
Prediction- I think that Riva will die if the Nazi’s stay in the war. 214-2
Judge/evaluate- I think what the commandant did was a good idea because it keep the girls morale up. 204-2
Infer-I think that Riva will recover from the infection in her finger. 201-1

2)question: my question is, why would they let Riva stay in the sick room for so long? wouldnt they want her to go and work even when she was still ill. when she got the surgery why didnt they tell her a few days later that she had to go and work?

3)connection: when Riva was helping that nurse to wash tubes, and Toilets. that reminds me of me washing my tube last night.

4)visualize: i can visualize the jewish people walking towards the woods and i can see that the nazis back up and start running away going back to there home.

5)build: at first i thought that yulek and his sister were going to come back and see riva againl i thought yulek and riva would have made a very cute couple. they understood eachother.

6)judge/evaluate:riva was a very strong and indeoendent person. whenever someone was down she would alwasy find a way to make them smile or laugh she was very kind.

Question-Page 256 paragraph 5 My question is why are they taking them to the woods and what are they going to do with them there and if they are going to kill them why are they going to kill them?

connect- Page 240 paragraph 2 My connection was when riva goes back to work and she sees all her old friends and my connection was that this scene reminded me when you see your family member at Christmas when you haven't seen them in a really long time and you tell all your stories about what happened to you.

Predict- Page 243 paragraph 2 I predict that they will get caught by the commander when rita is trying to wash her hair because they keep really close watch off what they are doing so i predict they will get caught and get into trouble.

Judge/Evaluate- Page 243 paragraph 4 I think rita is really brave and daring to try and wash her hair i read in the book she was nervous about it but it still take a lot to do it when they know the punishment if they get caught and what happens to them.

Infer- Page 264 Paragraph 3 I infer that at the end of the book she tells her kid when hope is gone all is gone i think that message will be passed down in that family for a really long time and that all help them get through the hard time just like it helped riva get through the hard times.

VIsualize- Page 257 paragraph 2 I had a strong visual of them standing on the path not knowing what to do and not knowing if they were freed or if they were going to be killed or not. I can see them just see them standing there scared and then finally making a choice to go back to them camp i can see the whole scene.

Mariah- I think they kept riva in the sick room so long because they knew it was the right thing to do and they also kept her there because she wasn't fully healed she just got out of a surgery.

  17. Anna Woolsey English Hour 1

Question-Why do they favor Riva so much? The sick were only allowed 3 days in the sickroom, so I don't see how just because she does poetry, she's allowed more time?

Connect-When the Germans were celebrating Christmas and the Jews had to perform for them it reminded me of when I had to do a performance at the School Forest in front of the counselors.

Predict-When they were being sent to work and Riva had to go and it was her first day after being sick, I figured that they would take Riva somewhere else.

Judge/Evaluate-I think that Riva was very strong to be able to survive the whole time she was sick. Everyone was saying how she was very lucky.

Infer-In the end I think that Riva is a very good mother because she knows what not to treat her children like because of her experience in the camps.

Visualize-When the author describes Riva's pain in her hand, I can almost imagine it being my hand, and when I think about that it scares me.

Troy-I didn't see the warm bath as such a symbol, but considering you used it for more than one of you categories, I can see how it stood for so many things.

1)Question- On page 205, paragraph 1,why would the Nazi's let Riva, this Jewish girl, go into the hospital, even if it she needs it? Sense when do the Nazis care about Jews? Only thing i can think of is if the Nazis need her for labor work, but even than wouldn't they just kill the sick Jews?

2)Visualize- On page 184, paragraph 4-5, when Riva ask to go to the bathroom and the guard wouldn't let her, I unfortunately visualized the pee streaming down her pant leg and than all the other women being disgusted.

3)Connection- On page 208, paragraph 3, when the little 7 year old girl and her mother just look at Riva and than the child's mother says "Jew, Jew", it reminded me of this happening but when the blacks didn't have the same rights as the whites and the whites calling the blacks names and avoiding them.

4)Predict- My prediction was Riva was going to survive and reading the rest of the book i found out my prediction came true.

5)Determine Importance- during the end of the the book on page 217, paragraph 3, when Riva says she is going back to "the cage" which must be important considering the title of this book is called "The Cage".

6)Summarize- Chapter 38, this chapter is mostly about Riva finding out that she is going to the hospital, but they wont let her be checked out because they are too busy. So she has to try other hospitals. She has to walk hospital and is not allowed on the street, so she is forced to walk in the gutters. All the hospitals do the same, and not allow her in because she is Jew.

In response to Anna when she asked her question about them "favoring" Riva is, well part of it is that her poetry helps the other Jews survive in the camps and give them some more hope to survive, so they can do hard labor for the Nazi's.
