Behind the Bedroom Wall - Section 1

    1) Question- When Korinna and her mother hear the crash upstairs, does her mother think that it has something to do with the hideaways? (30/8)

    2) Connect- When Korinna talks about her fingers and toes hurting as she warmed up from coming outside, that makes me think of when I go for morning walks and think my thighs just feel like icicles when I come inside. (7/8)

    3) Judge/ Evaluate- At first, when Herr Haase fell on the ice in the beginning of the book, it seems like Korinna doesn’t hate him or other Jews too much. But when the author talks about her mom serving a Jew, it seems like she really has intense hatred for Jews. (46/5- second part of my thought)

    4) Visualize- When the author states “She had smelled the rank smell of unwashed bodies and she had seen the pale glow of skin, and the gleam of eyes” (35), it paints a brilliant picture in my mind. (And I couldn’t even imagine the smell, either!) [35/5]

    5) Determine Importance- I really like what Korinna’s mom says to her daughter- “But you mustn’t follow blindly behind great promises” (29). Just because someone says s/he’s going to do something, doesn’t mean that s/he’ll do it. And in the end, her mom’s statement is very true about Hitler. (29/11).

    6) Summarize-

    • Chapter 4
    • Korinna finds out that her parents are hiding two Jews.
    • Her parents don’t seem to like what Hitler is doing, and his hate for Jews.
    • Korinna thinks her parents are traitors- now, she will have to decide whether or not to turn her parents in.
    • (No page/paragraph #’s)

      1) Question- I understand that Korinna’s parents sent her to the Jungmadel meetings so people would be less suspicious of them and figure out they were hiding Jews, but why did they feel they had to do that? If they believed so firmly that what Hitler was doing was wrong, why wouldn’t they inform their daughter of their opinions? (Not really on a page number, just a general question)
      2) Predict- I predicted that when Fraulein Meiser wasn’t at school, that she had been arrested for helping a Jew or not being on Hitler’s side. As I read on, I learned that she decided to leave with her father when he was arrested. (18/8)
      3) Judge/Evaluate-I really thought that Sophie is a very strong person, and she shows it by trying to find some humor in her situation like she did in this section. It’s really important for a person to try to think positive despite the situation they’re in. (60/5)
      4) Infer- I inferred that Korinna’s parents got her the cat to help keep the belief alive in her mind that it is really mice behind her wall, not the Jews hiding. (13/1)
      5) Visualize- Unfortunately, I could visualize the opening scene where Herr Hasse was being arrested. I could picture how he fell, how he was kicked, and how his head was bleeding. (3/4)
      6) Determine Importance- I thought when Rachel was showing Korinna her pictures, that Korinna was starting to lighten up to Jews. She realized that Rachel was just a little girl like any other, and it didn’t matter that she was a Jew. Korinna found herself enjoying looking at Rachel’s pictures, and that is important to how her attitude towards Jews will change now. (59/2)

Noah, I really like your third reading strategy and what you said about her attitude seeming to change or get worse. After I read that over, I realized how that was true. I wonder why that happened?

    1. Question- pg37, paragraph 7. I don’t understand how to say some of these names these people’s names are like in French or something.
    2. Connect-pg37, paragraph 1. When korinna found out that there were Jews behind her bedroom wall I felt bad for her because she was the last one to find out about them and I’m always the last person to find out things in my family too.
    3. Predict- pg43, paragraph last one. I think korinna is not going to turn in her parents because she is starting to feel love for the Jews and she love her parents to much. So I think she is not going to turn her parents but I do think she is going to help the Jews.
    4. Infer- pg54, paragraph right in the middle. When korinna and her mom were arguing about the Jews I thought of me and my mom because we argue about things against the different people and stuff.
    5. Visualize- pg37, paragraph I can see korinna screaming because she saw the Jews in her wall, then her parents running towards her, and then all of them talking about how they got and why they are there and korinna thinking weather she should turn in her parents.
    6. Determine importance- pg43 the last sentence. “Her parents were Traitors. Traitors were shot.
Kaylee I agree with you on your question reading strategy I was wondering the same thing why send her to her meetings when they are cheating behind Hitler’s back

Alisha, I think that all the names you don't understand are in German- like Frau, (which is German for Mrs./Ms.)And Herr means Mr.

  3. Zach Rick- 3rd Hour English
1.Question- Why do German adults have Herr or Frau in front of their last names? (10/2)
2.Connection- Korinna says she’s not hungry and her father says there are hundreds of hungry kids. That reminds me of all the hungry kids in Haiti. (10/8)
3.Judge/Evaluate- I can’t believe how big of a Nazi supporter she is after what she witnessed with Herr Hause. (6/3)
4.Predict- Rita’s brother who is a Nazi soldier will arrest Korinna’s parents later on. (5/7)
5.Visualize- I see Herr Haase falling on the ice and him bleeding everywhere. (3/1)
6.Summarize- Chapter 1 explained the characters personalities. You can figure out who’s who after reading chapter 1.

2.This reminds me of when I was in 4th grade and my teacher had a sickness, so she had to retire from her teaching and stay home. ( Chapter 2, page 18, paragraph 5)

3.I predict that Rita I going to turn in her cousin, because maybe she I a Jew or he is hiding Jewish people. (Chapter 2, Page 17, paragraph 7)

4.My opinion I that Korinna’s parent should of never hid Rachel and her mother behind Korinna’s wall. ( Chapter 4, Page 37, paragraph 2)

5.Building up my thoughts I think that Korinna is a girl that hates Jews and don’t like Jews at all. ( Chapter 4, Page 37, paragraph 4)

6.I can visualize Korinna in her bedroom ad how he can hear things behind her bedroom wall. ( Chapter 1, Page 13, paragraph 4)

Zach Rick I had the same exact question when I was reading the book, I was wondering why their last name always had either Herr or Frau in front of their last names. And I like what you had predict on what is going to happen to Korinna’s parents.

I looked online about what schrank means, and it's just a cabinet/closet where you put clothes.

And Zach, Frau means Ms./Mrs. in German!

1- ) Question: I would like to know how to pronounce the characters names in the book? I wish they had the dictionary sayings in the back of the book. (Page 1, Paragraph 2)

2-) Connection: In the book when Korinna says that she is not hungry and her plate already has food on it and ready to be eaten her fathers says that there are hungry kids in the world. And this reminds me of what my mom or dad would tell me.

3- ) Visualize: I can create of very good mental image of this, Rita flipping her long braid over her shoulder like a whip. Rita is the kind of girls htat I can picture her doing something like that. Pg5, Paragraph 6

4- ) Predict: I don’t think that Korinna will turn her parents in because if I were to be Korinna I don’t think that I would be able to turn my very own parents in for what Korinna’s parents are doing. (Page 43, Last Paragraph)

5- ) Judge/Evaluate: I believe that Sophie is a very determined, outgoing, and very positive person. Sophie does it by looking at the positive side of things and never the negative. (Page 60, Paragraph 5-6)

6- ) Summarize: In the beginning of the book around chapter one and two they are describing the characters and the plot/setting of the book Behind the Bedroom Wall. (Age 3-7)

Molly Vang, I also wonder what a schrank means? I just looked it up and it means in (Pennsylvania Dutch furniture) a two-door clothes cabinet one side of which has drawers and shelves and the other side an open space for hanging clothes. Hope that i helped you out Molly on your question. Your Section 1 descriptions look very good! Good Job Molly(:

    1) Question - I wonder why Frau Rehme said that, “History doesn’t change, just peoples perspective”(8). She then quickly took it back like it was going to offend Korrina it seemed like. (8/5)

    2) Connect - Frau Rehme says that herr Haase’s family wont be helped because he was accused as being a “Jew-Lover”. My connection is that, last year my family helped a less fortunate family just like someone will do to the Haase’s because Herr Haase helped many people, and know one will forget it that quickly. (9/8)

    3) Predict - I think that there is some foreshadowing happening at the end of chapter one because Korrina says, “You can trust me to make the right choice.” This indicates that something is going to happen, either good or bad.

    4) Judge/Evaluate – Eva was acting very concerned for Herr Haase. She, I think< is not so into the Nazi rule as Rita and Korrina are. This might also say that Eva’s parents are a part of the German families that take in and hide the Jews, seeing how unexpected finding out that Korrina’s parents were apart of that.(5/3)

    5) Summarize – During the first couple chapters, were introduced to the main character of the book, Korrina. She, and her two friends witness the local butcher being arrested for being a “Jew Lover”. At school the next day her favorite teacher came up missing as well. Back at her house, she constantly complains of mouse behind her walls. Korrina then finds that it isn’t mice behind her wall, but two Jewish people in hiding. Their names are The Krugmanns, and slowly Korrina is falling out of her Nazi rule and starting to like the little girl Rachel.

    6) Infer – When Rachel is showing Korrina her drawings and she has to hold back I smile, I’m going to make an infer that Korrina will not turn her parents in and realize that she is being brainwashed to believe in the “Fruher”. (59/2)

Alexis, I totally agree with your prediction if Korrina will turn in her parent or not. There is some definite foreshadowing at the end of chapter on that might say what her choice is.

    1. Predict- I predict that Korinna will eventually learn the sense of why her parents are helping Jews hide. (54/1)

    2. Jude/Evaluate- I think Korinna is so judgmental, she thinks that Jew’s are so bad. What would she do if she was a Jew? (55/1)

    3. Question- why would Korinna even think about turning her parents in? (43/2)

    4. Visualize- I can Visualize the moment wear she hears the mice’s between her walls so when her dresser wouldn’t budge, I can visualize her moving the dresser. (35/2)

    5. Summarize- Chapter one was basically about going to school and introducing her friends and there school and also her family members and getting a new kitten. (Chap. 1)

    6. Connect- This Reminds me of Coppersun, When Amari and Polly were trying to hide from the slave chasers, just like Sophia and Rachel hiding from the Nazi’s .

Amanda Brown, I agree with you that there was some foreshadowing at the end of chapter one, Because when Korinna says that it does make me wonder if a big event will be happening pretty soon.

  9. Emily Timmer- 1st Hour English

    1. Connect- The activities they do in Korrina's fungmädel remind me of the activities they do at Girl Scouts.(pg.11 paragraph 4)

    2. Visualize- I can visualize Korrina's kitten huddled in the box. (pg.13 paragraph 2)

    3. Question- If Rachel's paceing was rythmic, then how did Korrina think it was mice til the end of section 1? (pg.39 paragraph 6-7)

    4. Predict- I predict that Korrina will not turn her parents in with the Krugmans.(pg.39 paragraph all)

    5. Summarize- chapter 4 was about Korrina finding out about the Krugmans. It was about her thinking her parents were taitors.( chapt. 4)

    6. Judge/Evaluate- when Korrina is excited to listen to the "Fuhrer" speak, it shows how brainwashed she is.

Gao Chee Lor, to answer your question, Korrina would think about turning her parents in because she has been brainwashed to turn anyone in if they are not loyal to the "fatherland". Hope that helps.

1)Question- Why was Korinna so worried if people would see her in the room with the Rachel when she doesn’t even like the jews and thinks her parents are traitors and is thinking about turning them in herself? (56/2)

2)Connect- When Korinna had asked her father why Fraulein Meiser isn’t teaching anymore and her father replys that she hadn’t got arrested but chosen to go with her father to take care of him instead. This reminds of romantic movies when theres two lovers and one is about to get shot but the other jumps right in to let the bullet hit itself first. (32/last paragraph)

3)Predict- I predict that Korinna will realize how bad Hitler is and actually end up helping the Krugmanns because she had to stop herself from smiling and we know how much she doesn’t like jews. (59/2)

4)Judge/Evaluate- My opinion about Rita is she is selfish and a showoff because her brother Hans is an officer arresting traitors and she thinks that makes her cool also. Also she is selfish because she would even turn in her own family members if they were to be a traitor. (5/2)

5)Build- At first I thought that Korinna will turn in her parents when she knew her parents were traders because she really was on Hitler’s side and believed that jews were traitors of her fatherland. (38/2)

6)Visualize- I could imagine the inside of the hiding looking like a hallway except smaller and darker and can imagine Rachel stepping but taking little steps with her short legs. I could visualize this because the author had details that made me create this mental picture inside my head. (61/1)

In response to Emily Timmer I predicted the same thing but I also predicted that she will not turn them in but since she is so brainwashed will she realize whats really going on with the jews or will she not. What if she tells her best friend Rita and she turns all of them in for being traitors?

  11. Kimberly Gums 7th hour-
    1. Connect- pg. 18 paragraph 5. The way Korinna reacts to Hitler and his rule reminds me of what I have read about Hitler and WWII. It reminds me that in the poor time right after the war Hitler spoke in a way that almost brainwashed people into thinking he was good and had all the answers. Korinna feels that Hitler would go down in history as a great man which was how many people felt during that time.
    2. Predict- pg. 10 paragraph 2. I predict that Korinna’s parents are friends with some Jews because they are both saying that Jews are not that bad and that history books shouldn’t be changed. They also say that people should help “Jew lovers” because they haven’t done anything wrong.
    3. Judge/evaluate- pg. 8 paragraph 2-7. I think that Frau Rehme is against the government and what is happening in Germany. I think she is a good person who sees through Hitler’s lies and unfair ways. I think this because she doesn’t like the change in history books at Korinna’s school. She shows this by saying “...History doesn’t change just people’s perception of it” (pg. 8). She also thinks that the arrest of Herr Haase was unfair and cruel.
    4. Infer- pg. 31 paragraph 8. I infer that Korinna’s parents are hiding a Jew in Korinna’s wall. I infer this because of the sounds she herd that she thought were mice which her mom seemed awkward about, the dropping of the statue in the attack because it was too heavy for the cat, Her parents feeling nice toward the Jews and the fact that Korinna’s dad came inside through the back door when it was more convenient to come in the front. I have found that my inference was right.
    5. Visualize- pg. 3 paragraph 3-4. You could really visualize in the opening scene when Herr Haase was beaten and taken from his home to be sent to the concentration camps. You had to flinch at the bloody scene as he is sent to his knees and then trust into the back of a car. This was a good scene to go into detail with because it showed how mean the treatment of people was for being nice to Jews. It also shows how this kind of stuff was acceptable during this time period because the girls watch and think this was a fair and just punishment.
    6. Determine Importance- pg. 4 paragraph 3. I think it’s important how Eva reacted to Herr Haase’s brutal arrest. She was sad and confused on how this was considered ok just because someone was helping a Jew. She represents the fact that not all people thought that what Hitler was doing was ok because many people thought it was cruel. Eva also shows how these people would react by shrugging it off because they were afraid of being caught. It must have been so hard to be a bystander in that situation.

In response to Mai Thao Vue I agree with you when you say that Rita is a show off type person. I also feel that she accually feels that fighting the Jews is right because that is how she was raised and she doesn't know to think any different.

1)Question- Why did Korrina's parents not tell her about the Jew's hiding in her room? (38/2)

2)Connect- I connected to what Korrina's parents telling her right after she says that she's not hungry, that they're a lot of people starving. That reminded me that my mom tells me that when I say that I'm not that hungry.

3)Predict- I'm thinking that Korrina may turn in her parents for hiding Jews, yet I think that she might she'll might just accept that her parents are hiding Jews.(38/2)

4)Judge/Evaluate- Korrina is so, well what we call them today, a prep, labeling people, and she is so judgmental. How would she reacted when she's a Jew and is labeled? (55/1)

5)Visualize- I can see Korrina scared to find out that her parents are hiding Jews. I can see her screaming from the shockment, of finding out that they are hiding the Jews. I can see very that clearly in my mind.(37/1-5)

6)Use Fix-Up Techniques- I think that the sentence “But she's very involved in her Fungmadel and she honestly believes... well, they teach her many things at those meetings.” I think infront of 'believes' should be 'that'. It sounds better that way.(48/2)

In response to Kimi Gums, I can see how you connected to that. I can remember in like grade school, that we talked about WWII and they talked about Hitler being cruel, and how nasty the consternation camps was.

  13. Kailey Durst- 4th hour

( 1. Connect- I can connect to when Korinna was pretending to be asleep when her mother came in because she thought that her mother would try to talk to her when she was very upset with her mother. (Chapter 5, page 46, paragraph 2)

    2. Predict- I predict that Korinna will change her thoughts on the Jews. And that she will actually like them and turn against Hitler. But go to the meetings with her group to act like she is one of them so she won't get caught.

    3. Visualize- I can visualize when Korinnas father says that he has a surprise for her by his boots, and her going and finding the cat and her facial expression. (Chapter 1, page 13, paragraph 1)

    4. Infer- I inferred when Korinnas parents are hiding the fact that they are actually traitors hiding Jews. I inferred that to actual families who were pure Germans would betray Hitler and the Nazis and do what they thought was right.

    5. Question- What does the word "schrank" mean. It sounds like some kind of cloth... (Chapter 4, page 38, paragraph 4.)

    6. Judge/evaluate- I am going to judge Korinna. She seems like the kind of girl that is willing to change sides,(From Hitler follower to traitor) but only for a good reason. Not just because like her friends turn that way. But because of her parents doing that, I thinks she will change sides because she doesnt want to go against her own parents.

Julia- The answer to your question of: Why did Korinnas parents not tell her about the hiding Jews in her room? Well its because they wanted to keep the act up and not get caught. But they knew that because she was a Hitler follower that she might report them. Also I had that same visulization. Also your judge and evaluate! But I didn't write it down since you already did.

    1-Question:
Why can’t Korrina see others view points and especially because they’re her parents….will she really turn them in? (48/7)

    2-Connect:
I used to hear mice behind my bedroom wall, not anymore though. But when I did my heart would stop and I would become so scared just like Korrina did. (34/3)

    3-Judge/Evaluate:
Reading this it makes me so angry at Korrina because she doesn’t know anything. She doesn’t know how dangerous it is yet she’s only making situations worst by only thinking about herself and not others and judging them by taking some people’s words for it when she really hasn’t even experienced it herself so I say that her being so judgmental is not right for she doesn’t even know a thing but only taking someone’s words for it and she doesn’t know what’s coming next. (46/5)

    4-Infer:
I believe that at the end of the book Korrina will not turn her parents in but see their views and points and plus the fact that one of the Jew’s is a little girl named Rachael I think that she might be the one who will help and inspire Korrina to change her mind and help them out. (59/3)

    5-Visualize:
I can imagine Korrina on her bed faking to sleep and her mother with the tray of food entering the room with delicious smells of food setting it on her bed and then sliding open the wardrobe and handing it to the Jews and then asking and questioning and talking about Korrina without knowing that she really wasn’t asleep but eavesdropping on what they were saying. (46/3-5)

    6-Determine Importance:
It’s mean and shocking to know that Korrina is the enemy yet she doesn’t know and she’s calling and treating the Jews like animals or at least she thinks its right and wants to do it but all her time I do hope that she realizes that she was the enemy all along. (46/5)

    1. Infer- I believe that there are Jews hiding in a secret room behind the wall and that’s what the ‘mouse’ noises are, this I think Korrina would be more scared of to have in her walls. 35/5

    2. Question-I’m wondering how a child could turn in her own family! The thought of doing something at such a young age makes me sick. 17/9-11

    3. Connection-I can connect to having different emotions swirling about inside of me. You know you should do one thing, but really you want to do something else. 43/1-6

    4. Determine Importance-I think it’s worth re-reading the passage where Korrina thinks of what would happen to her parents if she told the Nazi, they would be shot. 43/6

    5. Judge/Evaluate-I wouldn’t believe that someone could be so dedicated to one thing that they would give up everything for it, just like Korinna’s ‘best friend’. 27/3

    6. Summarize-

*In this chapter, Korrina discovers that the noises in her wall aren’t what she thought they were. It turns out that there are Jews hiding in her wall, the entrance being her wardrobe.
*Korrina has conflicting feelings of whether or not to tattle on her parents. She knows that if she does they’ll be shot, but she doesn’t know what to do.

      2. Connection- When Korrina got her cat that reminded me of my first cat. I did have a lot of difficulties naming her but later came up with the name mitten. Pg:13 Paragraph:Whole page

      3. Prediction- I predict Korrina will not turn in her own parents. Although she knows they are traitors and she is loyal to Adolf Hitler, she still loves her parents. Pg:60 Paragraph:8

      4. Judge/Evaluate- I thought Herr Haase was very thoughtful to give extra meat from his butcher shop to the poor people and helping out the Jews. He took the risk even though he knew it was going to be dangerous and that's what makes him such a nice guy. Pg:5 Paragraph:7

      5. Visualize- I could imagine/visualize/picture two smelly, dark figures behind Korrina's dresser looking terrified because some one had found them and of the sunlight. Pg:37 Paragraph:Whole page

      6. Summarize- This chapter was when Korrina first found out about the Rugmanns. She was told to hate the enemies and report anyone who were hiding Jews. But she just couldn't report her parents because she loved them. She knew they were traitors but she couldn't possibly let her own parents let shot or sent to concentration camps because she loved them. Chapter:4 Pg:37-43

Lindsey Welker- I totally agree with you on your question. I don't know why anybody would want to turn in their own family. I know for sure I would never do that.

1)Question-Why couldn't Korinna agree with her parents decision in keeping the Jews? I know she was going to a school to teach her not to like them, but I would think she would respect her parents decision.(38/6)

2)Infer-I assume that Korinna does like Rachel by the way she actually cares about her drawings, she just doesn't want to admit it because she is so set on the idea that the Jews are the enemy of the Fatherland.(59/1)

3)Determine Importance-I think it is important that Korinna's mother cares about the Jews, but Korinna doesn't. In the beginning of the story she really shows respect for her mother but now that she knows about the Jews she doesn't show respect(54/2)

4)Judge/Evaluate-It seems like Rita is just a mean person. Not just to the Jews just a mean person in general. She showed this by trying to turn in her own family member.(18/1)

5)Visualize-When Korinna's father opened the secret door I visualized a dark room with two scared and skinny people. It was a sad image.(37/4)

6)Predict-I predict that Korinna will become fond of Rachel because she does sho some respect for her in caring about her drawings and giving her the kitten after feeling somewhat guilty for taking it away from the little girl.(59/1)

Wendy Vang-I agree with your question, but I also know she was taught to hate the Jews. I just don't know why she would follow in her parents footsteps.

1.Question: I have the same question as Korinna. I wonder where the history teacher, Fraulein Meiser is? (18/4)

    2. Connect: This reminds me of how the Franks were hiding, just like the Krugmanns. (35/5)

3.Predict: I predict that Korinna will not tell on Eva. I think that because Korinna and Eva are friends, best friends. (21/3)

4.Infer: I think that the mom is lying. I think that Korinna’s mother lied because the kittly wasn’t under the bed when Korinna checked, and it didn’t make and sound. (26/3)

5.Visualize: I can visualize the people behind the closet door. I can visualize there pale glow of skin, and the gleam of their eyes. (35/5)

6.Determine Importance: When Korinna’s mom murmured Heil Hitler. I think that, that’s important because Korinna seems to have less cared about her Fatherland. (28/4)

Ally Dzurka – I agree with you, I think that Korinna does like Rachel, but she just wouldn’t admit it. I also think that it’s important that Korinna mother cares about the Jews, because they are human being too. I think that Rita is a mean person, but just a little.
