1) Question- Why does Korinna give the colored pencils to Rachel? It seems like Korinna likes and hates Jews at the same time. For me as a reader, it’s hard to decide what “side” Korinna’s taking. (113/4, 5, 7).
2) Infer- After Korinna threw the snowball at the little girl, it appears that she has a difficult time convincing herself that before/after she does it. (Also, Korinna writes in her small black book that “My parents are the enemy” (75). And so, when Korinna feels a little sad for the Jew and doesn’t take action about her parents being traitors, I don’t think she’s going to turn them in. (81/4 AND 75/3).
3) Visualize- On page 103, when the author talks about the fluid motion, glass ball shattering into a million shards, piercing, and wide, innocent eyes, all that creates a vivid image in my mind. (103/1).
4) Determine Importance- To me, it’s very interesting to think about all the little details of how the Jews’ hiding place is set up and hidden- it gives the impression that somebody put in a lot of thought into (really, almost) everything.[112/7]
5) Use Fix-Up Techniques- When I first read the paragraph, I was confused about what happens- if Korinna actually hit Rachel in the face with a snowball or not (why would Korinna anyways if Rachel shouldn’t go outside), and if all that was happening in real life or not. But, when I read the 8th paragraph on page 109, that information really helps. (103/1 AND 109/8).
6) Summarize-
Chapter 10
•Hans (Rita’s sister) searches the Rehme house for any Jews, and he doesn’t find any.
•(Also, Hans hurts Korinna’s dad and [Hans] rips a photo of Herr Rehme’s grandfather in half. It’s just a little detail, but it’s very important to Korinna’s dad).
•Korinna is not sure who she trusts and believes in. Life is a little more complex for her now- it’s not just “simple” hate for the Jews.
Lindsey Welker-5th Hour English 1. I think Rita may find out about the Jews because she already suspects Korrina is hiding something. 65/11 2. Doesn’t Korrina feel the slightest bit of pity, its inhuman to hate a little girl that much! 47/14 3. I’ve read in another book where the main character faked to listen in on a conversation. 47/14 4. I re-read this because I saw how Rachel was trying to make peace with Korrina but Korrina wouldn’t cooperate. 59/1-2 5. I think that it’s absolutely horrible that Korrina is so self-centered to not want to share anything with Korrina. 57/7 6. Summary
*In this chapter Korrina has doubts about her Nazi group because of the slap she got *Korrina also has doubts about throwing the snowball at the jew.
1. Question- Why did Rachel name the cat Tag? Pg:116 Paragraph:4-5
2. Connection- Rachel reminds me of my little sister Feanna because she is exactly like her. Feanna cries about things but is not annoying. She also loves me, her older sister, a lot just like how Rachel loves her sister. Pg:71 Paragraph:4
3. Prediction- I predict Herr Rehme will do a search again in Korrina's house/watched closely because they are very close to the Reinekes. Pg:124 Paragraph: 1
4. Judge/Evaluate- After all the things she's learned about Jews in the Fungmadal meetings, -turn them in, hate hem, they're the reason for bad luck- she still took the risk to not turn them in and got to know them. Pg:131-133 Paragraph:8
5:Build- I always thought Rita hated Jews but it turns out she just didn't want to sound like a "Jew-lover." I think she really doe care about Jews. Pg:128-129 Paragraph:5-14
6. Visualize- I could just see Ruth above the barn suffering and how damp and cold it was up there. Pg:131 Paragraph:1-7
Lindsey Welker- I agree with you on Rita hiding something. I think she's just trying to be nice to Korrina so she would tell her what's really going on because she knows Korrina thinks Rita is her 'best friend'.
I wonder since Korinna found out about her mother’s best friend doing exactly the same move or action (hiding Jews) as her mother and father, will Korinna turn her back on the Fatherland and help her family or would she do the total opposite? (124/4)
Connect:
This one time I went to babysat my little cousins in Milwaukee and it was for a month I went and their house is huge and this one night my cousins had tai kwon do practice and my uncle went to go play some golf. So left in the house was just my older sister and I. We were both on the couch sleeping with the TV on, next thing you know my sister falls asleep and I can’t because I was so scared then all of a sudden someone comes banging at the door like a burglar at the back door and I was so confused because everyone comes to the FRONT door and so I woke my sister up and we got up to hide but couldn’t in time because the person showed up at the front window but thank goodness it was just my other uncle. (103/3)
Predict:
With her parents feeling in danger enough at the time, I think that Korinna is going to help her family and the Jews out instead of the Fatherland because as of right now I think Rachel is doing a great job at pitying Korinna so I think that Korinna is starting to see things, like what’s right and what’s wrong. (124/2)
Judge/Evaluate:
I honestly think that if Korinna is confused whether she’s a traitor or loyal German or maybe she isn’t even a traitor but a helper but with that I think that she should just make her own decisions and not because Rita’s her best friend and that she should listen to her all the time but I think it’s time for Korinna to choose her OWN decisions now because so far lately she’s been listening to Rita. (79/8)
Build:
I think that Korinna’s personality/characteristics are changing and into a better person than she was before. I think she’s starting to realize who the enemy really is. (125/1)
Visualize:
I can really picture Korinna under the bed sheets holding her breath and holding still and scared while Hans is acting all cocky and trying to find Jews that he is saying he can smell them, and I also can just picture the Jews behind the wall scared to death not even wanting to breathe a bit. (105/4)
In conclusion Wendy i don't think that Rita likes Jews i think it's just a trick because lately in the book if you recall Korinna has been acting weird lately and as best friends i'm pretty sure that Rita thinks something is going on because Korinna wouldn't even let her go to her house or upstairs in her room and if you also remember Rita was staring at the wardrobe for quite a while. plus the fact that Korinna has been skipping out on the fungmadel meetings.
1) Question- Would Rita will turn in her only BEST FRIEND if she knew she was a traitor? Because it’s funny how she’s talking about feeling bad treating the Jews that way to Korinna. (122, 6)
2) Predict- I think that Rachel must’ve had the kitten because previously korinna did not find the kitten but after giving up on finding the cat she goes back to her room and finds that the cat there but how could she have missed it if she searched everywhere. (70, 10)
3) Judge/Evaluate- I think if Rita would know that Korinna’s parents were traitors she would turn them in with no hesitation. (118, 9)
4) Build-After the Nazis came into Korinna’s house and searched Korinna it said her heart was beating rapidly. I think that once she found out that her dad got hit by Hals she realize maybe the Jews didn’t betray her fatherland and that maybe the Hitler were the bad ones. (113, 1)
5) Determine Importance- I was surprised Hans had hit Korinna’s father because after all Rita and Korinna were best friend. But as the book said it’s not the same Hans they use to know anymore. (106, 4)
6) Use Fix-Up Techniques- I was confuse because after Rachel answered saying that was the bathroom I thought I had read something wrong and went back to read it again but it was right. I guessed it’s different when all you have is a little space behind a wall to be. (112, 4)
In response to Wendy Vang- I think she named the cat Tag because Rachel named it. In the book it also said that Sophie said since Rachel only sees the kitten during the day when Korinna isn’t here so Rachel named it tag or day.
1) Question – When Korinna has that dream about throwing a glass snowball at Rachel , I think that it’s horrible! Why would she have that dream? Is it from the guilt of not being loyal to the Fruher? (103/1)
2) Build – Korinna now has come to realize that turning in her parents is not the right thing to do. She is also coming to like Sophie and Rachel more. (98/1)
3) Infer – I think that Korinna has come to realize that Rachel is just an innocent little girl that doesn’t have anything, and that she should be kind to her because she’s not going anywhere soon. (74/1)
4) Visualize – When Rita called to Korinna’s kitten I could just imagine the look on Korinna’s face if Rita were to hear the meow behind the wall. She would just freeze in terror and looked shocked.(95/11)
5) Determine Importance – Korinna said, “Not that work camps were supposed to be all that bad…” (66) This quote shows how the Fruher has influenced these young children by the meetings after school and other youth groups.(66/3)
6) Fix-Up Techniques - I was confused here because Frau Rehme wasn’t paying any attention to her daughter being hit. I kept reading on and I realized she did care, but didn’t want to show it in front of Rita. (94/4)
Yer, I agree with your thoughts about if Korinna is a loyal German or a traitor. I think she has been a traitor her whole life, she just hasn't known it. She, I think, is just scared of what other people might say about it, or do about it.

Yer, I toatally agree with your thoguths about Korinna being a traitor. She is just worried about what people will think and do about it.
Alisha Evers 4th hour 1.Question: pg 82- paragraph 6: why did her leader hit her she didn’t do anything wrong all she did was fall behind the heil Hitler thing I don’t understand why they hit her now if she was doing something else that was disrespectful then yes she should have been slapped but otherwise why? 2.Connect: pg: 109: paragraph the very last one: when she said she didn’t know who she could trust. I have the same problem sometimes I don’t know who to trust and I wish I had someone to trust. 3.Judge/ evaluate: pg: 94: paragraph: 4: I can’t believe that korinnas' mother didn’t even care that she was slapped really hard when that could have been counted as child abuse. 4.Build: pg: 116: paragraph: whole page: I think that korinna is starting to like the Jews because over time she starts to spend more time with Rachel. 5.Infer: pg121: paragraph: last one on pg: when korinna was trying to find out who the Jews were Rita kept saying who cares with some people if I ask the same questions and they say the same thing who cares it’s like I do. 6. Visualize: pg 106:paragraph:the whole page: I can picture korinna running into her parents room seeing her father on the floor, mom protecting her husband and korinna trying to get Hans away.
Kim Gums- 7th hour 1. Question pg. 78 paragraph 4- Why were the children so cruel to the Jewish children? I understand they have a resentment because that’s what they are taught to feel but why did they feel the need to go out of their way to bully the children? I think that is cruel and cold hearted. 2. Connect pg. 110 paragraph 1- Reading about how confused and conflicted Korinna feels reminds me of a book I read called Perfect Chemistry. This is because in the book Perfect Chemistry the main character is forced to go against everything he knows because he knows it’s the right thing to do. Korinna is forced to go against everything she knows in school because deep down she knows that it would be wrong to turn in her parents. 3. Predict pg. 105 paragraph 3- I predict that eventually Korinna’s parents will get caught and end up being taken away. I think this because there are little clues being dropped within the story such as on page 105 when Hans almost finds the hiding Jews. 4. Judge/evaluate pg.113 paragraph 2-6 - I feel that Korinna has a big heart because even though it goes against everything she has been taught she helps the Jews. She gave some of her colored pencils to Rachel and that shows that she actually cares for the young girls feelings and sees her as a true human being instead of the cold blooded enemy. 5. Visualize pg. 88-83 paragraph 4-3 on the next page- When the Jungmadel leader slaps Korinna I had to wince upon the impact. The blow was painful and you could tell from the way the scene was written that Korinna was shocked and deeply hurt and disturbed by the action. This was when Korinna first started doubting the German leaders. 6. Determine Importance pg.103 paragraph 1- Korinna’s dream showed that she is starting to have feelings for the Jews. This is because when she threw the snow ball she heard God knocking on the clouds as if saying that she had disappointed him. Also the scene of blood and tears disturbed Korinna and her dream showed her how mean it was to treat human beings as snow ball targets. Alisha I think that her mom did care she just didn't want to look dis loyal or give her friend any reason to think of her as suspisious.
Infer: When Korrina gave the colored pencils to Rachel, it seems that she cares about her and won't turn them in. (pg.113 paragraph 4)
Judge/Evaluate: Korrina is starting to become less brainwashed because she is starting to care about Rachel. She gave her colored pencils and spent time with her.(pg.113 paragraph 4)
Predict: I predict that Korrina will not turn her parents or the Kruggmans in because she cares about them.(chapt. 11)
Visualize: I could visualize it when Korrina was slapped.(pg.82 end of page)
Fix up techniques: I was confused when Frau Rehme didn’t care that Korrina was slapped. It just didn’t seem like something a mother would do. After I re-read it I realized that she was hiding her concern from Rita.(pg.95 whole page)
Question: Why was Hans hurting Korrina’s father if he knew him?(pg.106 paragraph 4)
In response to Kim Gums, The children were taught to hate Jews so that's why they were cruel to them.
1-) Question: pg(82) paragraph (6) Why did her leader hit her she didn’t deserve that she really didn’t do anything wrong? And know Korinna has to hid her hit that the leader did from her mom. Because she is scared that she mom will yell at her.
2-) Predict: pg(70) Paragraph (10) I think that Rachael toke the kitten and hid it with her being the wardrobe because he doesn’t have anything else to do and she just wanted someone/something to do instead of walking back and forth all the time in such a little space.
3-) Judge/Evaluate: pg(118) paragraph (9) I believe that if Korinna would have told Rita about her parents being traitors that Rita would tell Korinna that she wouldn’t tell anyone, but eventually she would because that is against the law and is wrong her Korinna’s parents to be doing that.
4-) Visualize pg(95) paragraph(10-11) When Korinna toke her cat from Rachel I can just really visualize Rachael’s face of the cat being token away because Rachael has nothing, and no one to play with.
5-)Build pg(98-99) paragraph(1-2) Korinna now realizes that is was wrong in a way to turn her parent in because now that she thinks about it more she wishes that she would have never of done that.
6-) Summary: The part in the book when Korinna gets slapped from her master, she know thinks that the Nazi solider has thoughts about her.
Kim Gums: You did a very god job describing your visualize I also could see that clearly while I was reading. And you are correct about Korinna's dream how is showed the feeling she now has for the jews.
I agree that Rita would turn Korinnas parents in after promising not to tell anyone because she breaks alot of promises.
1. Question- Is Korinna going to turn in her parents? (66/13) 2. Connect- Korinna’s mom is saving things for her future. My parents are also dong that and other people save things for their future off springs. (70/1) 3. Predict- Korinna is going to name her cat after Rachel. (64/2) 4. Judge/Evaluate- Korinna is straying a little from enjoying the Nazis which is a brave thing. (65/10) 5. Visualize- I can see a little girl bloody and crying, a scowling mother, a furious teenager, and a confused cat. (71/3) 6. Determine Importance- Surprising (71/3)
Kaylee Heil- 3rd Hour English 1)Connect: The connection I made was when Korinna didn't want to go to school because of that feeling of something being unnormal and seeming suspicious for some reason. I've been in a position where it felt awkward to go somewhere when I had been missing for a while. (63/4) 2)Predict: I predicted that Rita was going to do something about what Korinna wrote in her notebook about her parents, and she might have told her brother, because he came that very night. Even if she didn't report it, there's no telling that she won't later on. (97/3) 3)Build: My first thoughts of Korinna weren't very positive at all, but throughout section 2 I've begun to change my mind a bit. She's been kinder to Rachel, and the thoughts that we read inside her head aren't as hateful as thy were earlier, and if they are, she thinks them with some hesitation/regret. (didn't really have a page number, throughout the whole section) 4)Visualize: When Korinna is entering the hiding place for the first time, I found my self easily visualizing the space. I actually origanally thought it was smaller than described, but I was happy to know that it wasn't as small as I thought! (112/6) 5)Determine Importance: Korinna does a few acts in section 2 that determine the importance of her character changing. Not only does she give Rachel colored pencils and a doll, but the earliest example is when she let her own kitten whom she loved, play with Rachel who was far more lonely than she herself was. It really shows the dynamic character that Korinna is coming to be. (74/1) 6)Summarize: ~Korinna returns to school, and Rita seems a little suspicious about her behaviors. ~Rita comes over to Korinna's house for a bit, and discovers what she had written in her notebook. ~The Gestapo, including Rita's brother Hans, come to the house late at night to search. ~Korinna visits the Krugmann's hiding place for the first time. ~Frau Rehme's best friend, the Reineke's are arrested for helping hid Jews. Zach, for your question about Korinna turning in her parents, I don't think she will, because already she is changing her attitude towards Jews and her "love" for Hitler is starting to seem questionable to her.
Molly Vang Hour 4Th 1)QUESTION-I wonder why Korinna hates Jews so much? Her parents are only trying to help them from getting killed from the nazi. ( Pg. 48/ Paragraph 5-6) 2)DETERMINE IMPORTANCE- In section 2 Korinna had made importance of her character changing because first of all Korinna had let Rachel play with the kitten and then she let Rachel use her color pencil. ( Pg. 74/ Paragraph1) 3)CONNECTION- When Korinna didn’t feel like going to school because of that feeling of something being unormal and seeming suspicious for some reason, reminds me of when I didn’t feel normal and didn’t want to go to school. ( Pg. 64/Paragraph 3)
4)VISUALIZE- I could visualize when Korinna was entering the hiding place for the first time, I found myself easily visualizing the space. (Pg.112/Paragraph 6)
5)PREDICT- I predict that Rita was going to do something about what Korinna wrote in her notebook about her parents, Even if she didn't report it, there's no telling that she won't later on. (Pg.97/Paragraph 3)
6)BUILD- At first I thought that Korinna wasn’t really positive at all, but in section 2 she changed a bit in my mind because she was more nicer to Rachel and the thoughts that I read inside her head aren't as hateful as they were earlier. ( Didn’t really have page number)
In Respond to Kaylee Heil, I thought you had a very good connection to the book. For me I also had the same exact connection because when I didn’t feel normal or comfortable going to school I stay home like Korinna. You also had a good Summarizing in section 2. I like how you describe each section that happened in section 2.
1)Predict- I predict that Korinna will not turn in her parents. Something that makes me think she won't turn them in is when she rips the page from her "Black Book" up that says her parents are the enemy and throws it into the garbage (Pg.97)
2)Visualize- Something I can visualize is when Korinna gets slapped by her group leader. (Page 82)
3)Question- Is Rita really going to turn in her best friend? Your bestfriend is supposed to keep your secrets but with Ritas brother being with the Nazis I think that Rita just might be able to tell him and get them arrested.
4) Judge/Evaluate- Judging the fact that Korinna gives Rachel the colored pencils shows me that Korinna has changes since the beggining of the book. She has grown as a person. (Pg.113)
5) Connection- I can make a connection to when Korinna doesn't really like Rachel at first but when she starts, "Growing up", She realizes that Rachel is a good person and is just like anyone else. I can connect to this because at first I don't like a lot of people. But then I get to know them and they are actully pretty cool.
6) Fix Up Technices- When reading the part when Hans hits Korinnas father, I was confused on WHY he hit him. I got to the end of the section and realized that I was reading but not thinking. So I went back re-read and figured out why. (Pg.106)
Molly Vang- The reason I think Korinna hates the Jews so much is because Hitler practiclly brainwashed them with his afterschool groups. I can also visualize the space! Now that you mention it. Imagine having to live in it!
1)Infer-It seems like Rita is hiding things from Korinna and keeping secrets. From earlier in the book she seems like she would do this too.(128/3)
2)Question-I wonder if Korinna is going to turn in her parents. She acts like she is going to turn them in, but they are family and I don't know why she would turn in her own parents.(66/13)
3)Visualize-I visualized the look of fear and dread when Korinna got slapped by her group leader. (82/3)
4)Predict-I predict that Korinna is actually not going to turn her parents in or the Jews that live in her house because she does start to show SOME sympathy for them.(ch 11)
5)Connect-I could connect with Rachel only because she reminds me much of my second cousin Evvie. She is very happy and loves to draw.(ch 6-12)
6)Judge/Evaulate-I can evaulate Korinna's thoughts towards the Jews from the beginning until now and she has changed a lot because she gives Rachel colored pencils and she would have never done that in the beginning of the story. (113/5)
Kailey Durst-I also realized that Korinna has grown as a person. I wonder if she will continue to grow and like the Jews or if she will turn them in.
Ta Thao – 4th Hour English 1.Question: I wonder will Korinna turn her parents in? (64/6)
2.Connect: I agree with Korinna. I think that life was terrible, plain and simple. But, only sometimes. (85/3)
3.Predict: I predict that Korinna will start liking the Krugmann. (98/6)
4.Build: Korinna seems to change. I think that she likes Rachel now, because she wanted to play with her. And she wanted Rachel to come out of the bedroom wall. (98/5)
5.Infer: I think that the other day when Korinna couldn’t find her kitty was because Rachel probably had it, and she probably played with the kitty because she was bored and there was nothing to do (73/3)
6.Visualize: I can visualize the Chinese looking doll. The nose being chipped and a couple of finger missing. I remember when I used to have a little Chinese doll too. (116/2)
Ally Dzurka- I had the same question as you. I agree with you, it does seem like Korinna will turn in her parents, but they are family. You are right, I think that she wouldn’t turn in her parents, and the Jews because she does seem like she likes the Jews now. I think that Korinna has changed a lot from the beginning of the book.

ReplyDelete1) Question- Why does Korinna give the colored pencils to Rachel?

DeleteQuestion:

Delete1) Question- Would Rita will turn in her only BEST FRIEND if she knew she was a traitor?
In the book it also said that Sophie said since Rachel only sees the kitten during the day when Korinna isn’t here so Rachel named it tag or day.
and about Ruth up in the barn suffering that was in Chapter 12- section two. :)

Delete1) Question – When Korinna has that dream about throwing a glass snowball at Rachel , I think that it’s horrible!

1.Question: pg 82- paragraph 6: why did her leader hit her she didn’t do anything wrong all she did was fall behind the heil Hitler thing I don’t understand why they hit her now if she was doing something else that was disrespectful then yes she should have been slapped but otherwise why?

ReplyDelete1.

ReplyDeleteInfer: When Korrina gave the colored pencils to Rachel, it seems that she cares about her and won't turn them in.

ReplyDelete1-) Question: pg(82) paragraph (6)
Why did her leader hit her she didn’t deserve that she really didn’t do anything wrong? And know Korinna has to hid her hit that the leader did from her mom. Because she is scared that she mom will yell at her.
2-) Predict: pg(70) Paragraph (10)
I think that Rachael toke the kitten and hid it with her being the wardrobe because he doesn’t have anything else to do and she just wanted someone/something to do instead of walking back and forth all the time in such a little space.
3-) Judge/Evaluate: pg(118) paragraph (9)
I believe that if Korinna would have told Rita about her parents being traitors that Rita would tell Korinna that she wouldn’t tell anyone, but eventually she would because that is against the law and is wrong her Korinna’s parents to be doing that.
4-) Visualize pg(95) paragraph(10-11)
When Korinna toke her cat from Rachel I can just really visualize Rachael’s face of the cat being token away because Rachael has nothing, and no one to play with.
5-)Build pg(98-99) paragraph(1-2)
Korinna now realizes that is was wrong in a way to turn her parent in because now that she thinks about it more she wishes that she would have never of done that.

ReplyDelete1)Connect: The connection I made was when Korinna didn't want to go to school because of that feeling of something being unnormal and seeming suspicious for some reason. I've been in a position where it felt awkward to go somewhere when I had been missing for a while. (63/4)
2)Predict: I predicted that Rita was going to do something about what Korinna wrote in her notebook about her parents, and she might have told her brother, because he came that very night. Even if she didn't report it, there's no telling that she won't later on. (97/3)
3)Build: My first thoughts of Korinna weren't very positive at all, but throughout section 2 I've begun to change my mind a bit. She's been kinder to Rachel, and the thoughts that we read inside her head aren't as hateful as thy were earlier, and if they are, she thinks them with some hesitation/regret. (didn't really have a page number, throughout the whole section)
4)Visualize: When Korinna is entering the hiding place for the first time, I found my self easily visualizing the space. I actually origanally thought it was smaller than described, but I was happy to know that it wasn't as small as I thought! (112/6)
5)Determine Importance: Korinna does a few acts in section 2 that determine the importance of her character changing. Not only does she give Rachel colored pencils and a doll, but the earliest example is when she let her own kitten whom she loved, play with Rachel who was far more lonely than she herself was. It really shows the dynamic character that Korinna is coming to be. (74/1)
6)Summarize: ~Korinna returns to school, and Rita seems a little suspicious about her behaviors.

1)QUESTION-I wonder why Korinna hates Jews so much? Her parents are only trying to help them from getting killed from the nazi. ( Pg. 48/ Paragraph 5-6)
2)DETERMINE IMPORTANCE- In section 2 Korinna had made importance of her character changing because first of all Korinna had let Rachel play with the kitten and then she let Rachel use her color pencil. ( Pg. 74/ Paragraph1)
3)CONNECTION- When Korinna didn’t feel like going to school because of that feeling of something being unormal and seeming suspicious for some reason, reminds me of when I didn’t feel normal and didn’t want to go to school.

ReplyDelete1)Predict- I predict that Korinna will not turn in her parents.
