1) Question- Was the small family of three that Korinna saw the Krugmanns? Was the little child that waved Rachel? (144/11).
2) Infer- Now that I’m very close to finishing the book, I feel like Korinna really does not hate Jews- and she just “puts on a show” to make it seem like she does hate Jews. I feel this way because of Korinna’s conversation with Rita (and how she felt about throwing the snowball at the little child on page 81). [128/9 AND 11 and 81 also].
3) Visualize- All the parts about the holes being made in the living room walls, feathers from Korinna’s parents’ bed, and the flood from the bathroom forms an outstanding picture in my mind. (This all happens when the Gestapo comes in and searches the Rehme’s house). [149-3, 150-2, AND 151-4].
4) Determine Importance- The last sentence on paragraph two on page one-sixty is very true about what Hitler wanted to do with the Jews. The sentence is very well put, and it’s a good example of a simile. (160/2).
5) Use Fix-Up Techniques- I think that the whole story of how the other family came in to the Rehme’s house, switched clothes with the Krugmanns, then the Krugmanns leaving instead, and how the groups came in and out certain doors was very confusing at first, but then when I re-read it a couple more times, the plan made much more sense and seemed very well thought out to me. (145/5+7)
6) Summarize- Chapter 13
•Herr Krugmann comes to the Rehme’s house and visits his family.
•Korinna notices her friends are acting strangely and treating her differently.
•The three Krugmanns leave and then the Rehmes become worried about if their house will be searched.
Noah I AGREE WITH YOU ON INFERRING I WAS THINKING THE SAME THING THAT SHE DOESN'T HATE JEWS SHE JUST DOES THAT AROUND HER FRIENDS AND I ALSO THINK THAT SHE DIDN'T WANT TO HAVE THAT DREAM ABOUT HER THROWING THE SNOWBALL AT RACHEL.
1. Question- I wonder if Mr. Krugman Is going to join with Sofia and Rachel. (131, Whole page)
2. Connect- I love it how Rachel and Korinna Bonded, They remind me of me and my sister. (133,3)
3. Visualize- I could visualize Korinna running home after she was told her house was going to be searched. (143, 3)
4. Build- When Eva made her realize that she will be getting her house checked, I realized that Eva is different, she tried to help Korinna, and me as a reader, knows that Eva had care in her. ( 142, 4)
5. Predict – I predict that the Gestapo is going to find the room. (149, 1)
6. Infer- the people Korinna passed in with the bicycles I could see that they was the Krugmans by how the author added in that little detail. (143,3)
Noah, I Love that you retold where and when you visualized what you , Because you made it way more simple for me to look back into the book and reread that part.
1- ) Prediction: I think that Gestapo is going to find that small room behind Korinna’s wardrobe? Korinna and her family got very scared and worried when they came to check Korinna’s house. Pg(149) Paragraph (1-3)
2- ) Visualize: I can visualize Korinnas face as she hears the new from her friend that they are coming to check their house tonight. Then Korinna doesn’t want to run because she doesn’t want to show that she has to hid something/ let her mother and father know. Korinna then walks very quickly home. I can clearly see Korinna facial expression. Pg(147-152) Paragraph(ALL)
3- ) Determine Importance: On page 160 Hitler wanted to do something with the Jews. And that was very true. Pg(160) Paragraph(Page)
4- )Question: When Korinna saw the family of three on bikes Korinna didn’t even know that is was the people hiding behind her bedroom wall. I wonder if that is really even them? Pg(144) Paragraph(10-11)
5- ) Summarize of the last chapter: I felt bad for Korinnas kitty that they had to leave behind and that someone kicked her cat. Korinna and her family seemed very scared and didn’t really know what to do. I liked the way how Korinna told the person that came in and checked there house a lie about behind her wardrobe.
6- ) Connection: I have lied before to someone just like Korinna had did and her parents were just going along with it and didn’t know what she was really saying at all.
Gao Chee Lor, You did very good i liked the way that you stated your visual. I also had the same question to i had many questions throughout the last section of the book.
Question: I wonder that if Korinna said what she said, does that mean that she is officially a Jew-Lover. Because it seemed like when she said “they must think I hated them” it seemed like she wanted the Kruggmans to think or know that she did like them but couldn’t find a good way to express it well. (146/6) Connect: Sometimes when guests are over, and I don’t have the time to talk to them or I’m just too shy to, I don’t talk to them then when it comes to the time where they have to leave sometimes I wonder if they thought that I hated them or just didn’t like them. So that’s just like how Korinna probably felt except a bit more worst because they were Jew’s and in that time especially, the Jew’s were hated and called the enemy and so Korinna probably felt as if she could’ve been way more supportive and helpful and caring towards them all. (146/6) Predict: To be honest, how the story ended was quite weird. But at the same time I knew it was going to end like it had ended. I knew that what Korinna was lacking was the freedom with her friends and that meaning she didn’t have the heart to hang out with her friends because she was afraid her attitude would totally change and then they would all start looking at her suspiciously. So I felt as if when Korinna found out about the Kruggmans I knew that from there on to the end of the story that she was going to start feeling weird and scared every time she had to face her friends. The good thing though was that she found out her problem at the end and it was her freedom and maybe not just hers but others too. (163/3) Judge/Evaluate: I think that the Gestapo’s are over exaggerating things. They shouldn’t do such horrible things to literally everyone it just really gets me mad. Towards this conflict I think that the good Germans and Jew’s should’ve at least had some defense in situations like this. (149/1) Build: The way Rita was starting to act, it got really intense with the hatred and suspicion floating in the air, and before at the beginning I remembered Rita a bit nicer than she was towards the ending. I also had a bad feeling that Rita was going to start looking at Korinna suspiciously because when she came over to her house she kept her eyes on the wardrobe for quite a while. The way that Rita acted towards the end I thought that she should’ve stayed Korinna’s best TRUE friend, instead she didn’t. (141/8) Visualize: I can really imagine the way Hans and the other gestapo’s standing in Korinna’s room looking at everyone suspiciously and smelling the smell of the Jew’s and I can almost feel the fast beating hearts of the family. The other thing that really got me scared was just reading the text that said the Gestapos were staring at the wardrobe, because I didn’t know what was going to even be inside it. (154/2)
To Alexis, me too i also felt really bad for the kitten left behind, but the one thing was that the part where Korinna said she realized that it was her turn to hide, that was really almost like a shocker, because it seemed as if Korinna was actually starting to know how ALL THE JEW'S feel like everyday.
Alisha Evers 4th hour 1. Question: how does korinna know that Rachel forgot her sister what if she just drew her instead and what if some of the other pictures were Ruth? Pg: 135 paragraph: last one 2. Predict: I think in the next chapter korinna and her family will move some where safe and korinna will be sad because she will never see anyone she loves ever again.pg: 149:paragraph: chapter 14. 3. Build: I thought korinna was going to turn in her parents but now I know she will not because she is starting to like the Jews. Pg. 143: paragraph: 1. 4. Connect: when all her friends were ignoring her I felt really bad because I had the same problem in elementary school. Pg.141:paragraph:6 5. Visualize: I could see korinna going to the stairs then her farther telling to stop then telling her that they weren’t there anymore ( behind her wall.) pg.144:paragraph:7 6. Determine importance: “Eva told her that she was her friend. She must be her last friend.
1.I think that Rita is lying and just wants Korinna to confess about the Jews, and get evidence to tell her brother in order to have their house searched. 128/2 2.I wonder if it was Rita who stole Korinna's book to show her brother Hans. 129/5 3.Ive had that feeling before, the one you get when a friend is lying to you. 129/8 4.It was a 'scary' thing for Korinna when Eva told Korinna that her house was going to be searched by the Gestapo. 142/8-11 5.I think that Hans has defiantly changed since Korinna has had her little crush on him because she would never like someone who was as mean as him now. 157/2 6.In these chapter the Jews left the room and Korinna's family was searched, because of this Korinna's family left their home.
Mai Thao Vue- 5th Hour English 1) Question- Why did Rita lie about not having to see Korrina's black notebook but then stealing it to give it to Hans betraying her best friend? (155, 6) 2) Connect- i can connect to Korinna because once i do something bad and it come back to me like karma so i know how she feels when Rita ignored her and so did everyone else just like she did to Anita Scheinmann. (140, 6) 3) Predict- After Hans had exposed the hole behind the wardrobe i really thought it was the end for them. I thought they were going to get arrested for sure. 152, 1) 4) Judge/Evauluate- From the first time Rita said she would turn in anyone if they were a traitor to their fatherland and I think she really did mean that. She doesn't care who unless she's protecting her fatherland. (155, 6) 5) Build- I thought Eva was really into Hitler and all but after telling Korinna her house will get searched I think Korinna should've realized who really was her best friend in the end. (142, 6) 6) Determine Importance- I really thought that Rita might've felt bad for the jews but that was all a set up to trap Korinna (her best friend). But now if you look at it she's not her best friend but Eva is. (155, 6) In response to Lindsey Welker I agree that Hans has totally change. But if you think it this way not everyone stays they same as they were when they were little. People mature has they grow up they learn the rights and wrongs and get influence by it.
Molly Vang 4th 1)QUESTION- I wonder if Rachel and her mom will see their dad and Ruth?( Didn’t really have page just needed to ask that question)
2)CONNECT- This part reminds me of when Hmong people were being killed and forced out of their homes to go to a concentration camp just like how the Jews had to go to a camp also. ( Pg: 121, Paragraph 1-2)
3) PREDICT- I predict that Korinna and her family will make it out before the Gestapo finds out and capture them into prison. ( Pg: 147, Paragraph 1-2)
4)VISUALIZE- I could visualize Korinna facial expression very surprise when Rita said that they found some Jews (they were the Reinekes). ( Pg: 121, Paragraph 4-5)
5)BUILD- At first I thought that Korinna was going to turn in her parents, but later on she decided not to because they began to love Jews. ( Pg. 143, Paragraph 1)
6)DETERMINE IMPORTANCE- Eva told Korinna that she was her friend. She must be her last friend that she can believe in now.
In response to Mai Thao Vue I agree with you of how Rita had lied to her best friend Korinna. I thought they said they were going to be best friends forever. I also liked how you build your thoughts about how Eva had actually told Korinna that the Gestapo is going to search their house. I think that Eva is Korinna best friend.
Build: At the beginning of the book, I thought Korrina would turn in her parents. Towords the end she started to like and care for the jews. That’s when I knew she wouldn’t turn them in.((pg. 144 whole page)
Judge/Evaluate: When Korrina said that it was her turn to hide, it meant that she was leaving and going into hiding.
Sumarize: Chapter 15 • Korrina’s father tells her that they are leaving. • Korrina discovers that there is something as good as love; Freedom.(pg. 163 paragraph last)
Visualize: I could visualize Korrina’s facial when her father told her that they were leaving.(pg.160 paragraph 3)
Question: What happened to the Kruggmans after they left?(pg.144 paragraph6)
Determine importance: When Rita turned Korrina’s family in, she showed her true colors that she never really was Korrina’s best friend.(pg.155 paragraph 5) In response to Molly Vang, Rachel did see her dad again on page 137. The book also stated that Ruth died on page 131.
1) Prediction- I predict that Korinna is going to slip something out about the Krugmans to Rita and Rita will turn them in.
2. Judge/ Evaluate- Korinna started out as a loyal German. But over time the readers can tell that she is not a loyal German anymore, but she always convinces herself that she is a loyal German.
3) Question- Why was Eva the only one to step in and say something to Korinna when no one else was talking to her.? (Page 142)
4) Visualize- Because of todays society something that I can picture very well is a big group of girls gathering around Korinna when Rita is "Busting" Korinna. (Page 139.)
5.) Determine Importence- I believe that it is very importent that Eva told Korinna that the Gespto were coming because other wise Korinna wouldn't have been prepared with the secret room. (Pages 142 and148)
6) Fix-up techines- At the part when Rita is being mean to Korinna I got confused on why exactly she was being mean. Then I went back and re-read to figure out it was because of one of their earlier conversations.
In reply to Emily Timmer; In your building section- I thought the same exact thing. Were you shocked when you found out she didn't? Also your question is one that I think a lot of people had. This book was kind of a cliff hanger wasn't it?
Kaylee Heil- 3rd Hour 1)Korinna asked herself if it was a trap when Rita was "confessing" her fake hate for Jews. If she felt like it was a trap, why did she tell Rita more of her feelings?(128)
2)Predict: I predict that Rita has something to do with Korinna's missing notebook, partly because of the way that she changed the subject when Korinna brought it up, and as I read on I learned that she had given it to Hans. (129)
3)Build: At the beginning of the book I knew Rita hated Jews, but I never would have thought that she would betray her best friend. As I read this book I learned more and more about her and what she did to be a loyal follower of Hitler.
4)Visualize: During the parts when Rita was telling the other girls about Korinna, and when they were gathered around and/or ignoring her, I could visualize how that looked, because I have seen it many times in both movies/TV shows and real life.
5)Determine Importance: I think it's really important to realize what Korinna is doing for Rachel when she is helping her handle Ruth's death. It shows how not only is she talking to a Jew, whom before she hated, but she has grown to comfort and help a little Jewish girl. (133)
6)Summarize: ~Rita tells Korinna that she really doesn't hate Jews. ~Korinna learns about Ruth's death and helps comfort Rachel. ~Korinna's friend's act suspicious of her ~Eva warns Korinna that the Gestapo will search her house, even when no one talks to her. ~The Gestapo search, and Korinna disguises the secret room as a clubhouse. ~The Rehmes leave for safety the night of the search.
Kailey, I agree with what you said about Eva telling Korinna. I think it really shows who Korinna's real friends were the whole time.
Ta Thao – 4th Hour English 1. Question: I don’t get why Rita and Eva were acting strange to Korinna. I also wonder, what’s going on? (139/5)
2. Predict: I predict that the Gestapo will find the hidden room. (152/4)
3. Judge/Evaluate: I don’t understand/get why the 4 Gestapo guys would break the wall, ripped the sofas, and pulled floor boards. I don’t get why they were destroying everything. They were only searching through the house; they didn’t have to break things. Especially Hans, I don’t get why he would search Korinna’s and there house, because Korinna and Rita were good friends. (149/3)
4. Infer: I think that Korinna’s best friend Rita took her black notebook. I think that because when Korinna asked, Rita interrupted right away. (120/6)
5. Visualize: I can visualize the Krugmanns riding the bikes, and Rachel waving to Korinna. (145/8)
6. Determine Importance: Korinna cared for the Krugmanns. She thought that the Krugmanns hates her because of how she acted to them, and because of her opinion of the Jews. (146/6)
Kaylee Heil – That’s true, I think that Korinna told Rita about how she feels for the Jews because, she probably think that Rita was saying the truth, but she also thought that it was a trap. I think that Korinna fell for Rita’s confessing. I thought that Rita did have the notebook too. You did an excellent job on your blog post.
Kim Gums 7th hour 1. Question (pg151 paragraph 1) - Why did Korinna almost turn on her parents? Did her class really manage to brain wash her into believing that Jews were that bad like it did to so many during that time period? I bet that sub consciously Korinna felt that was the right thing to do even though it was against her family. 2. Infer (pg163 the whole page) - I infer that if the author would have continued the story she would have put Korinna and her family into hiding to show what hiding was like. I think that because of the fact that they were running away. I also infer that Korinna would learn to honor Jews because she would be able to glimpse what her friends in the wall had to live through. 3. Build (throughout the book) - At first I thought that Korinna was a mean brainwashed Jew hater. Building on the knowledge found in the book and the ending it shows her change form anti-Jew to understanding the Jews. I build on to the nice feelings and think that she actually envied the Jews for living in the wall and still staying positive after all the bad things they had to go through. 4. Visualize (pg149-150 all paragraphs) - I can see the men filling into the home and destroying everything. It was awful how they made the family watch their possessions broken and tossed aside. It makes me feel really bad for all the families affected by these raids because I can see it happening to thousands of families with no respect shown. 5. Connect (128 whole page)-I can connect to the betrayal on this page passed off as innocents to a movie I saw called Cyber Bully. In the movie the characters best friend turns on her by tricking her into saying bad things and then posting them online. In the book the best friend also turns on her friend and makes her say bad things. Then she turned her in and in both cases this caused great emotion and stress. 6. Summarize (the whole book) - In this story there is a girl named Korinna and she goes to a German school during the Holocaust. In the school the students are taught to turn in anyone suspicious or anyone harboring Jews. Korinna is forced to make a big choice when she finds out her parents are harboring Jews. She must choose to turn on everything she knows or turn in her own parents. In responce to Ta Thao I think that the reason Rita and Eva were acting so strange is because they knew about the raid and they thought Korinna was a tratior to Germany and she was outcasted. I think what Rita and Eva did was wrong because they asumed she had Jews and were being jerks as friends.

Th Nazis struckthese kids at a young age with this false information so the kids would believe.

1. Question- Were the two Jews captured Sophie’s husband and other daughter? (121/10) 2. Connect- Korinna and Rita are fighting over Korinna’s mom being a loyal German. It reminds me when two best friends fight. (118/1) 3. Predict- The Nazis are going to return and find the hidden area. (113/1) 4. Judge/Evaluate- Rachel is really brave for her age despite everything she is going through. (114/6) 5. Visualize- I can see the sad faces of the Jews as they heard that their daughter/sister died. (131/3) 6. Determine Importance- Important (113/1)
1) Predict- I’m predicting that Rita suspicion towards Korinna will lead to Han’s discovering the Krugmanns. (129/9)
2) Judge/Evaluate- Rita has just lied to Korinna about taking her black journal. Now, not only is Rita not her friend but also a traitor.
3) Determine Importance- When Korinna heard the news of Ruth dying, she immediately thought of how Rachel would react. This shows that she is starting to like Rachel and not take her as a “Jew”.
4) Question- I wonder why Eva wasn’t talking to Korinna is it that she didn’t want to get turned in for talking to someone that’s hiding a Jew.
5) Connect- Korinna’s house was ripped apart and then the hit the desk and chair with the axe and she said, “It was priceless. Now it’s worthless” (150). This happened to my family a couple of years ago. It was Christmas and someone broke in and stole and broke presents and belongings.
6) Build- I used to think that Rita was this nice and thoughtful girl. Now she has totally changed my mine by turning in Korinna and lying to her.
Zach, I agree with your prediction that the Nazi's will return and find the Krugmann's.
Amanda Brown- I had the same prediction as you too because just by reading how Rita was described I knew right away she was a bad friend who had and will always hate Jews.

1. Question- How can Korrina not know it was the Krugmanns that had passed them? I know they were dressed differently but she could still see their faces. I was confused on how she can not know it was them that had been in the bicycles. Page:145 Paragraph:7
2. Connection- I think love isn't as important as freedom because if you don't have freedom, then how can you have love? My mother taught me that and i absolutely agree with her. Page:163 Paragraph:3 and 4
3. Prediction- Knowing that Korrina really truly believes in freedom, I predict she and her family will successfully make it to freedom. Page:163 Paragraph:3 and 4
4. Infer- I infer Korrina and her family will be watched very closely because they are very close to the Reinekes who had been arrested for hiding Jews. Page:122 Paragraph:7
5. Visualize- I could just see Ruth above the barn suffering and how damp and cold it was up there. Page:131 Paragraph:1-7
6. Judge/Evaluate- After all the things she's learned about Jews in the Fungmadal meetings - turn them in, hate them, they're the reason for everything/bad luck - she still took the risk to not urn them in and actually wanted to get to know them. Page:131-133 Paragraph:8

ReplyDelete1) Question- Was the small family of three that Korinna saw the Krugmanns?
Judge/Evaluate: I think that the Gestapo’s are over exaggerating things. They shouldn’t do such horrible things to literally everyone it just really gets me mad. Towards this conflict I think that the good Germans and Jew’s should’ve at least had some defense in situations like this. (149/1)
Build: The way Rita was starting to act, it got really intense with the hatred and suspicion floating in the air, and before at the beginning I remembered Rita a bit nicer than she was towards the ending. (141/8)
Visualize: I can really imagine the way Hans and the other gestapo’s standing in Korinna’s room looking at everyone suspiciously and smelling the smell of the Jew’s and I can almost feel the fast beating hearts of the family. The other thing that really got me scared was just reading the text that said the Gestapos were staring at the wardrobe, because I didn’t know what was going to even be inside it. (154/2)

DeleteTo Alexis, me too i also felt really bad for the kitten left behind, but the one thing was that the part where Korinna said she realized that it was her turn to hide, that was really almost like a shocker, because it seemed as if Korinna was actually starting to know how ALL THE JEW'S feel like everyday.

I agree that Eva is Korinna's only true friend. Because a real friend wouldn't rat you out.

ReplyDelete1) Question- Why did Rita lie about not having to see Korrina's black notebook but then stealing it to give it to Hans betraying her best friend? (155, 6)
2) Connect- i can connect to Korinna because once i do something bad and it come back to me like karma so i know how she feels when Rita ignored her and so did everyone else just like she did to Anita Scheinmann. (140, 6)
3) Predict- After Hans had exposed the hole behind the wardrobe i really thought it was the end for them. I thought they were going to get arrested for sure. 152, 1)
4) Judge/Evauluate- From the first time Rita said she would turn in anyone if they were a traitor to their fatherland and I think she really did mean that. She doesn't care who unless she's protecting her fatherland. (155, 6)
5) Build- I thought Eva was really into Hitler and all but after telling Korinna her house will get searched I think Korinna should've realized who really was her best friend in the end. (142, 6)
6) Determine Importance- I really thought that Rita might've felt bad for the jews but that was all a set up to trap Korinna (her best friend). But now if you look at it she's not her best friend but Eva is. (155, 6)
In response to Lindsey Welker I agree that Hans has totally change. But if you think it this way not everyone stays they same as they were when they were little. People mature has they grow up they learn the rights and wrongs and get influence by it.

Judge/Evaluate: When Korrina said that it was her turn to hide, it meant that she was leaving and going into hiding.
Sumarize: Chapter 15
• Korrina’s father tells her that they are leaving.
• Korrina discovers that there is something as good as love; Freedom.(pg. 163 paragraph last)

ReplyDelete1) Prediction- I predict that Korinna is going to slip something out about the Krugmans to Rita and Rita will turn them in.
In reply to Emily Timmer;
In your building section- I thought the same exact thing. Were you shocked when you found out she didn't? Also your question is one that I think a lot of people had. This book was kind of a cliff hanger wasn't it?

ReplyDelete1)Korinna asked herself if it was a trap when Rita was "confessing" her fake hate for Jews.
6)Summarize:
~Rita tells Korinna that she really doesn't hate Jews.
~Korinna learns about Ruth's death and helps comfort Rachel.
~Korinna's friend's act suspicious of her
~Eva warns Korinna that the Gestapo will search her house, even when no one talks to her.
~The Gestapo search, and Korinna disguises the secret room as a clubhouse.
~The Rehmes leave for safety the night of the search.
Kailey, I agree with what you said about Eva telling Korinna. I think it really shows who Korinna's real friends were the whole time.

ReplyDelete1.
