1) Question- On page 157, hot soup gets poured all over the woman who had pushed to the front of the food line. I wonder, did they end up getting burned and dying? It never really says what happened to them. I also wonder, how could the Nazi’s be so cruel?
2) Predict- On page 120, riva goes to Yulek’s house, and they are forced to say their goodbyes. On page 121, Yulek’s last words are, “I will be back Riva, I will be back!” This makes me think that maybe, someday way in the future, they will end up meeting again. I think they may date, or become very close friends again.
3) Judge/Evaluate- On page 95, paragraph 4, it says that Riva puts her hand on top of Yulek’s and smiles. This makes me think that maybe Riva has feelings for Him, and he has feelings for her also, I think the only reason that they are not dating, is because they both have way to much to worry about, other than who they like. Their top priorities at the time are not dating, but taking care of their families, and surviving.
4) Visualize- On page 142, paragraphs 3-4, they are describing what the dark train is like. This gives me a very clear, disturbing image in my mind of people being thrown on one another in a dark room, with no belongings. It makes me feel very sad, and scared. One woman asks, “Is this what a grave feels like?” and I think it is really sad that they should even have to experience something as close as a grave when they are still alive. They are treated like animals, and it is an awful scene.
5) Determine importance- On page 107 paragraph 2, When Mr. Berkenwald is explaining to Riva why he took her name off of the deportation list, he says: “The list called for teenagers, true, but you are only a teenager in years. In real life you are a mother of two young children.” I thought this was a very sweet thing to do, and he was a very kind man for doing so. I really like what he said, because it’s true. She was forced to grow up early, and she lost her childhood because of it.
6) Summarize- Chapter 26- · Guards call everyone out for head count. · Hot soup is poured on the hungry women who push to the front of the food line. · Women are marched to toilets. · Riva refuses to use the holes, but is forced to.
1) Question: Every morning while Riva is in Auschwitz, everyone in the camp is ordered outside for a head-count. Why do they have to take a head-count every morning? Is this the Nazis way of calculating how many people have died each day and how many days it will take for everyone to die? (paragraph 1, page 156)
2) Connect: I had a text to text connection on page 161 in paragraph 2. Riva has a nightmare about life in the living skeletons. This reminded me of when Anne had a nightmare in The Diary of Anne Frank. I think that both Riva and Anne had nightmares because they were afraid of what might happen to them and even though they were trying to be hopeful, their thoughts came back to them in their dreams.
3) Predict: Paragraph 1 on page 168 prompted my thought that Riva will never find her mom. I predict that her mom was killed because the Nazis had said she was sick and told her to go to the left. Even if Riva’s mom was still alive there are so many people in the work camp and so many other camps that her changes of even being in the same camp are very slim.
4) Visualize: Paragraph 2 on page 145 helped me paint a picture of how the inside of the cattle cars were. I imagined everyone shoulder to shoulder, crying and sweating from the heat. I could smell human secretion and it was pitch black.
5) Use Fix-Up Techniques: In paragraph 4 on page 153 the author mentioned how on most decks lie five shriveled bodies. Just before that it said that the barrack was filled with triple-decker bunks. The first time I read that I was kind of confused about what the decks were. Then, I went and re-read the paragraph and I realized that deck was referring to one of three bunks.
6) Summarize: Chapter 27 o The Chapter starts with a headcount and after being outside for hours the Jews are sent back to their bunks. o Riva falls asleep and has a nightmare, but wakes up to the orders for another headcount. o Riva sees a young girl trying to pull her dying mother out of bed for the head count. o Everyone lines up for their food ration, some bread and watery coffee, and the water hose is turned on for just a moment.
Abby, I had the same question on page 157. The author described how the soup got poured all over the women, but she never really said what happened. I think it would have been interesting to find out what happened. I agree with your thoughts about Riva and Yulek. I thought that they did have a thing, but Riva just didn’t want to take it too far because of all the other things they had to worry about. I had the same visualization about being packed tight in the cattle cars. It was ridiculous that the Nazis stuffed so many people in tiny cars. The comment about the grave was really disturbing, especially when the other person said that in a grave you would have more space! This helped my feel how squished they were.
1.) Question- In the story it says that the people of the ghetto formed a large library filled with books. How did they get all those books? Weren’t they not allowed to take anything with them? (101, 2)
2.) Connect- I was able to connect the story with my life when Laibele had just died. Riva desperately tried to save him but could not and grieved. Although in the book the author says that the sun did not stop shining. This reminds me of when my great grandpa died and how somehow life goes on for me and my family. (91, 3)
3.) Predict- I think that what Hans Biebow, the S.S. ghetto commander says are all lies and that the Jews will only suffer more with the work that Biebow says will benefit them. (124, 2)
4.) Visualize- The scene is horrifying. I can picture a dark and dirty cattle car filled beyond its limits. I can also imagine the panic-stricken people and how they ask, “Is this what a grave feels like?” (142, 1-4)
5.) Determine Importance- I think this passage is important because it shows how Riva’s depressed attitude turns to one of hope. It goes to show that the important role that friends play on people’s lives. (95, 2-3)
6.) Summarize- Chapter 18 •Riva’s house becomes a safe place for people to hide. •Riva’s health continues to deteriorate. •Riva was moved from cutting to fabric to lining up the fabric for the other cutting workers. •David removes Riva’s name from the deporting list and put’s someone else’s name in her place.
Emily, that is a good question which is a little confusing to me as well. Although I think that you are right in believing that conducting a head count was the way that the Nazis kept track of who was dead and alive. I think that a headcount gave the Nazis a time to survey how the Jews were holding up and see if they were running short of healthy workers or not so they could send more Jews in. I also thought the same gruesome things that you described in the scene when the Jews were packed into the cattle cars.
1)Question- On page 142, paragraph 1, I wonder why the Nazi's have them suffer in a train full of people, because if they want them to be strong enough to work, you'd think they would be take more care of them?
2) Connection- On page 173, paragraph 2, I read Helen talking to Madam Commandant, and she got whipped for not speaking loud enough, and saying Madam Commandant after her sentence. My dad once told me that while you were in the Army that you had to do the same thing to show respect to who you were talking too.
3) Predict- On page 120, I predicted that Riva and Yulek were going to end up dating when they get back to the ghetto.
4) Build- On page 161, paragraph 1, I realized that throughout the book so far, I realized that Riva has changed a lot, she went from being a sister, then to a mother, and now she just seems lost without her brothers by her
5) Visualize- On page 161, paragraph 3, I could visualize the Nazi's yelling out to the Jew's to get out there so they could do the head count.
6) Summarize- In chapter 27, Riva is with the other women sleeping after they left the ghetto. And they have to wake up and do a head count. One of the girls' mother was dying on the bed, and she wouldn't leave her there to die.
Rachel, I was wondering the same thing for your question, but one of the ways they could have gotten books was by someone hiding them in their hiding place, so the Nazi's wouldn't take them when they were searching through their houses.
Kelby Johnson 4th 1: question I wonder if her mom died because they said that after a while they will just kill them for no reason or if the get weak. I 2: predict I think that the three girls will survive because they say there not giving up hope and are still surviving. 3: judge/evaluate motele/moisheles and the others they are deported to camps and got on the cattle train. 4: build I thought that most of them would die at the death camps right away but none died right away . 5: infer they are scared because a lot of Jews are being taken away and I learned that thousand were taken daily. 6: visualize the Nazis are coming and taken them away and putting them in the trains and taking them by force.
Brady Uekert 4th 1: Question- Why did everyone panic so much when the man came and talked to them about coming to the work camps? It seemed like he meant well. 2: Infer- 144/4 I think that Mrs. Boruchowich was scared that she would lose her kids so she volunteered to watch over them instead of letting Riva and the others watch them. 3: Connection- pg 140-143 On these pages it is showing the panic of losing your friends and family in big crowds. I remember growing up and always being afraid of being taken or lost, so this was an easy connection. 4: Determine Importance- 95/2 I think this paragraph and page are important because it shows how Riva’s sadness becomes more of an optimistic person. It really shows how much one person or a few people can play a huge role in one's life. 5: Judge/ Evaluate- 142/5 A man says something about having "more room in a grave than on the train". It was a scary thought that came to my mind, but they almost WERE in a grave for most of those people. For most, this was a train ride to wear they would be killed or worked to death. 3: Summarize- This section is where the author wants you to see the panic and anxiety of one waiting to be taken away by the Nazis. It would be really frightful to be a Jewish civilian in these times.
1) Question- On page 100 in paragraph 2, it talks about how books are not allowed in the ghetto, I don't really understand why they do not allow the people to have books? I don't see why they have to hide and smuggle them from one place to another? 2) Connection- I made a text to text connection on page 126, paragraph 1, and how Riva and her family have to hide from the Nazi's just like Anne Frank. How Anne and her family waited in fear every day for the Nazi's to come and take them away to a concentration camp. 3) Predict- In my opinion, It seams that Yulek is trying to become close to Riva so that they can than live together like a family, with their younger siblings. (93/3) 4) Judge/Evaluate- I believe that Riva finds it hard to stay mad at her brothers because they cared about her so much that they would give up a week worth of their bread for her. They would give it up just so that Riva could have a new suit for Passover.(114/3) 5) Build- When Riva and her brothers are in the cellar on page 129 paragraph 2, you can tell that she is trying to stay strong for them. In the first weeks that their mother was gone, Riva was scared, but now she is trying to stay strong for her brothers. She now cares more about them and how she now needs to take care of them. 6) Determine Importance- On page 108, paragraph 1, it is said that “Life is cruel in the ghetto...but it must go on” (108). This goes to show that even though there is cruelty in the world, you must move on and forget about the past. Focus on the future.
Brady, You had a good question, and I believe that they all panicked because they knew what the work camps were, and he was only “meaning well” in his tone and the way that he presented the topic. The man just wanted more workers for the concentration camps and wanted to make the process a lot faster by having volunteers to come and work.
1)Question- I wonder how long it has been since Riva’s mom has been taken away by the Nazi’s; how long have Riva and her brothers been living on their own? (89/1)
2)Connect- I had a connection when Riva had to leave the house she grew up in and was having a hard time leaving all those memories behind of her mom and family in better days. I also felt this way when I moved from “the house that built me” leaving behind the memories of growing up. (96/1)
3)Predict- I predict that Yulek and Riva will become close and really good friends, and they may even move in together later in the book since they are both motherless with siblings. (94/1)
4)Infer- Since Riva’s house has to get burned for firewood for the rest of the Ghetto I infer that the family may have to go to a community home because they have nowhere else to go. Also, a community home was mentioned earlier in the book and Riva feared that one day they may have to go live there. (96/2)
5)Visualize- I visualized all the mounds of hair, shoes, glasses, and clothes as Riva was entering the concentration camp. I cannot imagine witnessing this. (152/2)
6)Summarize- Chapter 17- In this chapter Riva’s house must be burned for firewood. They have to move into a new house that was once a small grocery store. They begin to build a secret library in their new house so that everyone in the Ghetto can continue to keep reading and learning.
Rebecca- In response to your question, I think the reason that they cannot have books in the Ghetto is because the Nazi’s are taking the Jews freedom away and I suppose that means their freedom to be able to read. I also think the Nazi’s don’t want them reading anything that goes against what Hitler is doing.
Ryan Bement hr 5 1). Question page 123 paragraph 4- Why would the man say we are trying to save you from the Russians when I’ve never really heard of the Germans having conflict with them.
2). Connection page 162 paragraph 6- I can connect to the people getting knocked down really hard and forcefully with the water. Just like getting hit really hard on the football field.
3). Prediction page 122 paragraph 1- I predict that yulek and his sister fayglele are probably dead because they have been away at a labor camp for almost 4 months
4). Judge/evaluate page 153 paragraph 4- When the people at Auschwitz said can you smell the burning flesh I thought that was pretty god awful and wrong to burn people alive
5). Infer page 122 paragraph 2- I infer that people will believe the false lies that the Nazi guy is telling them and fall into the trap of going to a labor camp.
6). Visualize page 149 paragraph 5- I can visualize the people calling out to their loved ones maybe saying goodbye for the last time. I think that would be extremely hard to say goodbye to my family for the last time because I love them all so much
1. Question- What is the Jewish Police? 103-1 2. Connect- Life is cruel because things get taken away from people. 108-2 3. Prediction- I think that Riva and Yulek will get really close and become best friends. 171-6 4. Evaluate- I think that Riva went thru too much at a early age. 106-5 5. Infer- I think that Riva will lose most of her friends. 106-3 6. Visualize- I visualize a small kid on their death bed with their mother screaming. 90-6
Mikaela Weisbrot- in response to your question riva and her brothers have been living alone since her mother was taken away.
1)Question-Page 138 paragraph 2 My question is When they decide to turn themselves in and all go together to the trains are they going during the raid and is so is that the only time they can go or can they get out anytime? and if its during the raid are there natzi soldier running around them?
2)Connect-Page 128 paragraph 4 My connection was when they are hiding during the raid and there in the cellar hiding and it says there hearts are pounding so hard that you can hear them my connection is that when i am nervous sometimes or there is something i have to do and its really important my heart feels like that and it seems like someone might be able to hear it pounding.
3)Predict-Page 132 paragraph 4 My prediction was when the natzis left after raiding there house i predicted that they were going to turn themselves in because they had to much stress hiding and they were losing hope and they were become more weak so thats what lead me to think they were going to turn themselves in.
4)Judge/Evaluate- Page 139 paragraph 2 I think Motele is a great mother and when they are going to the trains she is telling her kids to stay together and thats what makes her a great mother she cares about her kids and thats it she just wants her kids to be safe and she wants the best for her she is a really good mother.
5)Infer-Page 142 paragraph 1 I infer that after that the train they are on is going to a concentration camp and that they will not last long in the c concentration camp because they already have lost a lot of hope because they have lost a couple of people and they don't know what is going to happen so there is a lot going through there mind and it will be very hard for them to survive because ultimately thats what the natzis wanted when they put them in the concentration camp.
6) Visualize-Page 128 paragraph 3 When they are sitting in the cellar and hiding from the natzi when they are raiding there hows i can visualize them sitting there as still as they can and as quiet as they can. I can visualize the soldiers above them searching everywhere around them and them not seeing the cellar and the relief after they left i can see the whole scene.
Ryan- I understand your question and if this helps i think the russians were going after germany and wanted germany and i think there is conflict between them. If thats not right i also think the germans would tell the jews anything to make them want to leave.
Brooklynn Rucinski 3rd hour 1) Question: My question doesn't really have a specific page its kind of about the whole beginning of the section. How can all the jews keep hiding without the Nazi's finding them? They keep track of whos alive and all how can they not realize there are cellars in the houses?
2)Connection: On page 157 paragraph 3 Riva explains how it seems they are playing a cruel game counting and recounting over and over again. I made a connection to this because sometimes people call other people names/ are mean to them over and over again, and get into fights with them its kind of like a game of who can survive the longest without getting help or without backing down.
3)Visualize: on page 137 paragraph 3 I can visualize all the people slowly coming out of the buildings and meeting in the street. Its almost like they are going to face the world as one big family.
4)importance: on page 132 paragraph 4 Moishele Says "'remember if hope is lost, all is lost.'" This seems to be very important because from now on those are the words Riva lives by. The words that give her the strength to go on.
5)Predict: on page 144 paragraph 2 I predicted that Mrs. Boruchowich would be sent to be killed because she seemed somewhat ill and Mentally unstable.
6)Evaluate: On page 172 paragraph 2 I thought that the Commandant must be very high in power because most of the time women weren't allowed to be in the army or anything, so then from this arose the question did the Nazi's allow women to be part of the army/ police force?
In reply to Troy: I think they can go whenever they want and I don't think they go during a raid because it doesn't say anything about it and they seem very calm.
1)Question- On pages 99-101 the book talks about the “Secret Library”, which is now moved to Riva’s new house. Jews were not allowed to have books or any other kind learning system. How did they collect all of the books? Where did they get all the books if Jews were not allowed to have them (who gave them the books)? How did they manage to hide 300 books with out the Nazis finding them? Where did they put the books after they left for the camps? (Pg.99-101)
2)Connection- On page 161 Riva had a nightmare while she was at one of the camps. Her nightmare was about living skeletons walking towards her. I had a text-to-text connection with Riva’s nightmare and Anne’s nightmare. Anne’s nightmare was about her family and everyone else that was hiding with them getting caught by the Green Police. I had the connection because both the nightmares were about what could happen to them in the future. Riva could die, and the Green Police could find Anne and her family. (Pg.161/2)
3)Predict- I predict that Riva’s husband in the present part of the book (at the beginning) is Yulek. I predict this because it seemed that Riva and Yulek became very close friends before Yulek left to go to camp. At the end of page 95 they hold hands. In chapter 20 Yulek gets ready to leave for camp. In the chapter Riva and Yulek seemed very emotional about not seeing each other again, and at the end of the chapter Yulek repeats that he will be back. While I was reading that part it made me fell like Yulek had a little something for Riva, for he did not want to leave her. I also predict this because they both have the same story of life, so they both can really understand each other. They both last their mothers, so they have to be the parents of their younger siblings. (Ch.16 and 20)
4)Visualize- On page 145 the book describes the scene of the wagon that they were kept in for three days. While I was reading the part that described the scene I had a visual picture, I visualized a train wagon field over its capacity with disparate and confused people. I visualized one or two buckets filled with pee, and some even on the ground all over the people. I also visualized a hand full of unconscious people lying on the ground. I even could realize the smell of the wagon with hot human odder, the smell of pee. (Pg.145/2)
5)Determine Importance- On page 107 Mr. Berkenwald said to Riva that he took her name off the list that called for teenagers. Mr. Berkenwald took Riva’s name off the list because he thought that Riva may be teenager but for her younger brothers she is a mother, so she is a early mother who never got a childhood. He also said that he saved three lives not one, for her brothers would fallow her to camp if she was deported. I think that what Mr. Berkenwald said was very intelligent and meaning full, for I had a very hard time putting it into my own words. “The list called for teenagers, true, but you are only a teenager in years. In real life you are a mother of two young children.” I thought that it was a very caring and thoughtful thing to do for Riva. (Pg.107)
6)Summarizing- At the beginning of chapter 27 the girls are sent to their bunks to sleep, but after a while they were all sent out to stand outside in the cold. They are all sent inside to sleep, and that is when Riva has a nightmare. She was awaken for a head count, but before she got out she found a little girl by her dieing mother. After every one lining up they were given a slice of bread and some watery coffee. At the end of a hot sunny day they were hosed by water, but it was quickly turned off.
Mikaela Weisbrot that is a very good question. I think that the Nazis took Riva’s mom away four years before from the time on chapter 15. Meaning that Riva has been taking care of her brothers for around four years from page 89. The answer is in the paragraph right below the paragraph from where you got the question. (Pg. 89/2)
1)Infer: i assume most of the girls in this camp are going to die very soon. most of these girls can hardly walk and work. but they will try to survive.
2)Question: my question is, is why do they have to have numbers? don't you think it would be easier if they just had their own name not some number.
3)Connection: i will never forget this book. it is such a fantastic book and a lot of great details sometimes i felt like i was there.
4)Determine Importance: i hope that Riva still rights her poetry. she writes so beautifully. everyone loves her poetry. it says so much in just a little poem.
5)Judge/Evaluate: i cant believe that they are all separated. its just so sad. a family like that and they get separated. not cool. haha.
6)Summarize: in this section it talks about how they were separated and hope to see one another again. which i hope they do.
Krupaa Patel everyone had books saved somewhere in their houses so, so they decided to make a library. in Rivas house they had a cellar a big cellar so they made that into a library for the people so the Nazis cant find the other one so they moved the books from that place to the new place, very carefully.
1) Question: Why does Hitler use the jews as scapegoats? They are just like anyone else.
2) Infer: Back to my question,I assume that the people were in need of something to believe in, something to bring their economy back up, so I guess that the people would believe in anything they were told if it were to help them.
3) Predict: I predict that some Germans will smuggle books, medicine, and other needs because the Jews have some books and food that were "difficult to find".
4) Visualize: I read that they were all cramped in a dark train. I can imagine sick, dieing people with little to no room, with skeleton like bodies from starvation, and a sad feeling all around.
5) Connect: When the author says Jewish police, it makes me think of slavery in the US, sometimes African Americans captured other African Americans to buy or "earn" their freedom back.
6) Summarize: Their separation is the main topic, but many smaller things like knocks on their door, hiding, and worrying are some more obvious events that are important to know throughout the book.
In response to Mariah: Families were often separated during the war, it was just your number called in order to go to different ghettos/ camps but i agree it is sad and not cool.
1)Determine Importance- The first sentence on page 157 the author(Ruth Minsky Sender) italics the sentence of "You'll end up in smoke" and repeated it again. It must be something important or something that will be important later on in the book.
2)Visualize- On page 142 paragraphs 5 and 6 I could see all the Jews packed in so tight, so that they said it felt like a grave, but only the grave had more room. As well i can only imagine the horrible smells and sweaty bodies all around me. It most have been horrible.
3)Infer- Page 122, paragraph 2 and 3 were the Nazis said if the Jews leave together as a family they will stay as a family and that they will get an extra loaf of bread, will I, the reader, already knew that it was a trick of Adolf Hitler to get the Jews to concentration camps easier. While on the other hand they didn't know if they could trust what the Nazis said or not.
4)Predict- My prediction was correct. I had predicted that the Nazis were untrustworthy and that Riva's family and her were to be sent to concentration camps. Now I predict that a couple of the family members will pass a way due to the hard living conditions and Riva will again be the only one to survive.
5)Connect- In the book, I connected the part on when the Jews had to strip down and get their hair cut off, I had no idea how bad it really was. It reminded me of a different book I read about concentration camps, but never really did know how bad it really was for the Jews.
6)Summarize- Chapter 26. The boys and girls have been separated into gender and have been striped of their clothes and other possessions, as well has had to get their hair all buzzed off. They had to wait for orders to be made or they would be put in the "smoke". They got bathroom breaks were they only had a certain amount of time to go, in a hole with no privacy and bare naked in front of everybody.
In response to Tim about his question on why Hitler uses the Jews as scapegoats is because you might already now this, but Hitler blamed the Jews for everything wrong in the world. Past and Present time. Hitler was an insane man with Germany under his control.
Determine Importance-I agree that the "You'll end up in smoke" is a very important sentence because it seems like it's going to turn up again later in the book.
Visualize-Each time the Jews had to march to work I could see it in my head. I thought of slavery and it reminded me of a parade somehow. I'm sure for the guards it was as fun as a parade.
Infer-I also knew that the "come as a family stay as a family" wouldn't be true because right away they separate men from women.
Predict-I predicted that all of Riva's friends (Rifkele, Karola, Tola) would become sick or die. Fortunately I was incorrect, because none of them get sick or die, only Riva gets sick.
Connect-When they were first entering the camp, it reminded me of Anne Frank and when Mrs. Mayo taught us how they all got send to camps and had to take off all their clothes and give them to Germans.
Summarize-In the end they arrive at the camp, get separated, and are treated poorly. They are told to follow orders or else they will be whipped or smoked.
Isaac-You had some really good connections and I agree with a lot of what you said. I have a better understanding now.
Abby Nyseth-3rd hour English
ReplyDelete1) Question- On page 157, hot soup gets poured all over the woman who had pushed to the front of the food line.
6) Summarize- Chapter 26-
· Guards call everyone out for head count.
· Hot soup is poured on the hungry women who push to the front of the food line.
· Women are marched to toilets.
· Riva refuses to use the holes, but is forced to.
Emily Vesper- 7th Hour English
ReplyDelete1) Question: Every morning while Riva is in Auschwitz, everyone in the camp is ordered outside for a head-count.
6) Summarize: Chapter 27
o The Chapter starts with a headcount and after being outside for hours the Jews are sent back to their bunks.
o Riva falls asleep and has a nightmare, but wakes up to the orders for another headcount.
o Riva sees a young girl trying to pull her dying mother out of bed for the head count.
o Everyone lines up for their food ration, some bread and watery coffee, and the water hose is turned on for just a moment.

ReplyDelete1.) Question- In the story it says that the people of the ghetto formed a large library filled with books.
6.) Summarize- Chapter 18
•Riva’s house becomes a safe place for people to hide.

ReplyDelete1)Question- On page 142, paragraph 1, I wonder why the Nazi's have them suffer in a train full of people, because if they want them to be strong enough to work, you'd think they would be take more care of them?

ReplyDelete1: question I wonder if her mom died because they said that after a while they will just kill them for no reason or if the get weak. I
2: predict I think that the three girls will survive because they say there not giving up hope and are still surviving.

ReplyDelete1: Question- Why did everyone panic so much when the man came and talked to them about coming to the work camps?
Rebecca Snider- 1st Hour
ReplyDelete1) Question- On page 100 in paragraph 2, it talks about how books are not allowed in the ghetto, I don't really understand why they do not allow the people to have books? I don't see why they have to hide and smuggle them from one place to another?
2) Connection- I made a text to text connection on page 126, paragraph 1, and how Riva and her family have to hide from the Nazi's just like Anne Frank. How Anne and her family waited in fear every day for the Nazi's to come and take them away to a concentration camp.
3) Predict- In my opinion, It seams that Yulek is trying to become close to Riva so that they can than live together like a family, with their younger siblings. (93/3)
4) Judge/Evaluate- I believe that Riva finds it hard to stay mad at her brothers because they cared about her so much that they would give up a week worth of their bread for her. They would give it up just so that Riva could have a new suit for Passover.(114/3)
5) Build- When Riva and her brothers are in the cellar on page 129 paragraph 2, you can tell that she is trying to stay strong for them.
Mikaela Weisbrot- 1st hour English
ReplyDelete1)Question- I wonder how long it has been since Riva’s mom has been taken away by the Nazi’s; how long have Riva and her brothers been living on their own?

ReplyDelete1).

3. Prediction- I think that Riva and Yulek will get really close and become best friends. 171-6
4. Evaluate- I think that Riva went thru too much at a early age. 106-5
5. Infer- I think that Riva will lose most of her friends. 106-3

ReplyDelete1)Question-Page 138 paragraph 2 My question is When they decide to turn themselves in and all go together to the trains are they going during the raid and is so is that the only time they can go or can they get out anytime? and if its during the raid are there natzi soldier running around them?
Brooklynn Rucinski 3rd hour
ReplyDelete1) Question: My question doesn't really have a specific page its kind of about the whole beginning of the section.
Krupaa Patel-7th Hour English
ReplyDelete1)Question- On pages 99-101 the book talks about the “Secret Library”, which is now moved to Riva’s new house.
(Pg. 89/2)

ReplyDelete1)Infer: i assume most of the girls in this camp are going to die very soon. most of these girls can hardly walk and work. but they will try to survive.

ReplyDelete1) Question: Why does Hitler use the jews as scapegoats?

ReplyDelete1)Determine Importance- The first sentence on page 157 the author(Ruth Minsky Sender) italics the sentence of "You'll end up in smoke" and repeated it again.
Anna Woolsey English Hour 1
ReplyDeleteDetermine Importance-I agree that the "You'll end up in smoke" is a very important sentence because it seems like it's going to turn up again later in the book.
