I Have Lived a Thousand Years - Section 2

19 comments:

  1. Amanda King- 4th hour
    1. Predict- Throughout all of the first and second sections- I have made a prediction about the title I Have Lived a Thousand Years. My prediction is that when Elli states things saying that she has only survived through one day in such a low emotion, by the time she gets out of the camps its felt like one thousand years of torture. Yet she has been there for only a few months at a time.

    2. Judge and Evaluate- On page 88 in paragraphs 4-8 - I realize that Elli’s cousin, Suri, is very brave and has a lot of courage even in the most dreadful settings. I’m saying that because Suri has forced herself and others to eat dirt, so that they will survive. She has witnessed that the SS are trying to find their weak spots to kill them.

    3. Build- On page 106 in paragraph 4- I feel that Elli has pretty much lost all hope and is giving up her life. After she has witnessed death, her mother going mad on her, and being violated to the soul I can see why. She probably is thinking of how anyone could live like she is and how one person could do that to other people, yet controlling everything that is happening.

    4. Visualize- On pages 63-64 in paragraphs 1-9- I am able to visualize when Aunt Serena is screaming for freedom; while breaking all the valuables like the China and the crystal bowl. I could also feel the shock going through everyone’s bodies at that time. This is because if I would see my fragile, kind, sweet, quiet aunt spaz out like that I would most likely faint.

    5. Use Fix-Up Techniques- On page 106 in paragraph 4- Elli states “What is death all about? What is life all about?” I think those two phrases are important. This is because they are showing how fast Elli is losing all hope. Also for the fact that we most likely don’t even think about those questions when we really should be.

    6. Summarize- In the chapter “Alien Heroes” Elli and others experience many deaths, and possibly what I think could have been the death of their saviors. Those deaths and much more have Elli thinking that she has experienced death to the heart. After that was happening she starts to question why she is still in the camps alive.

1)Question- I wonder why the guards shot the little girls mom? (91/5)

2)Connect- I watched a show one time about how the Nazi’s used to gas the Jews. (92/3)

3)Predict- I think that all the food at the camp is going to be horrible and watered down. (88/5)

4)Infer- I’m sure that the Nazi’s make the soup out of anything they could find to feel the Jews. (88/1)

5)Visualize- I can see in my head the scene were Elli has to gulp down her soup. (88/4)

    6)Summarize-
Everyone showers and gets new uniforms to wear.
Elli passes the inspection by the doctor.
Elli meets up with her cousins.
    Elli finds her Aunt Celia.

I was reading you post Amanda and I found that your visualization was on pages 63-64 which is actually on section 1. Otherwise everything else is great.

1)Question- I was wondering why the girls wouldn't move off the bed above them? Would they have moved if they knew that their actions were threatening lives? (124/3)

2)Connect- I feel the same way for my mom as Elli does for hers. If I were in Elii's position I would motivate my mother like Elli did. (119/2)

3)Predict- I predict that both Elli and her mother will be done in the concentration camps. We know Elli survives because she wrote the book, but I think that her mom will too. (NA)

4)Determine importance- When Elli says that she changed into an inmate in concentration camps, this is a major sign that Elli is starting to loose her identity. (114/5)

5)Visualize- I can really picture how Elli looks with her hair, as they described in the book, "a crown of bristles about my head". I can really see how she looks as a concentration camp inmate. (115/2)

6)Infer- I have a feeling that Elli's mother will completely regain strength because she is improving so much already over such a short time, usually when people are paralyzed they are paralyzed for life. With Elli's mother's fast improvements, I feel that she will completely regain strength. (NA)

In reply to Eric, I think that they shot the girl's mom because they think she might of started a sabotage and that was her punishment.

Question- As they keep mentioning SS soldiers throughout the book, what does SS stand for or mean? (104/8)

Connect- I had a self to text connection when Elli said there was so many people in the train that she couldn’t breathe. A few years ago at a dance competition it was a super hot day and we all had to be packed into a tiny room to wait to go on stage, and I felt like that. (116/2)

Predict- I predicted at the beginning of the chapter titled “Is It True About The Smoke?” Elli would be talked about the burning bodies. (127/Chapter Title)

    4) Build- Elli seems like she has turned into a very strong young girl. Even though her mother was very sick, she thanked God that she was alive with Elli, rather than dreading her being an invalid. (140/9)

Visualize-Elli describing the bloody dead bodies’ smell in the hot sun gave me a visual, but also gave me chills to have to read and think about that. (105/5)

    6) Use Fix-Up Techniques-The word planierung was in italics, and I didn’t know what it meant. I remembered that any words in italics were in the book’s glossary. I found out it meant the leveling of the ground. (109/6)

In response to Hannah, I can really visualize what Elli looks like also. She uses very good descriptive words and phrases for that in the book. I also remember a part when she said that she saw herself in a reflection for the first time since the camps, and didn’t even believe it was her.

    1. Question- While in the crowd of people, Elli finds her two cousins Hindi and Suri. Why does she wait until this point in the book to tell the readers about them? She describes them to have great importance in Elli’s life, being that she had spent one of the best summer vacations of her life at their house four years ago. (85/3)

    2. Predict- I predict that neither Elli nor her mother will be shot. I think a miraculous even will happen that causes both Elli and her mother to be safe. (110/2)

    3. Judge/Evaluate- I’m surprised to see that Elli and her mother are leaving Auschwitz already. It seems like they have been there for such a short time period. I’m curious to see whether they will keep moving to different sites like this or not. (99/2)

    4. Build- In my mind, Elli has turned out to be very brave. In the beginning, I had always thought that she would need to be at her mother’s side all the time. It was brave of her to get up in the middle of the night, find Elsa, and alert her about the broken bed. (124/4-6)

    5. Visualize- A strong picture is painted in my mind of the new members of Auschwitz marching in unison, barely enough strength to continue. Everyone has been without water for days, the sun unbearably intense, and nothing on their mind but survival. (82/2)

    6. Determine Importance- The moment where Elli spots worms in her mother’s soup and she doesn’t even acknowledge it, says a lot. This shows that being put through rough experiences can completely change someone’s personality. Elli’s mother used to be a very cautious and finicky person as Elli described. (103/3)

In response to Leah, I also had an eerie feeling while reading about the dead bodies. I couldn’t imagine walking through the fields of bodies as Elli did, I don’t think my stomach would be strong enough.

1)Question- what does “SS” mean? (Whole section)

2)Visualization- when she described all of the women on the ground I could actually picture a bunch of women sprawled out on the ground with their eyes closed, sleeping. (87/3)

    3)Summarize-

-Everybody has to strip down and shower.
-Elli finds her cousins and Aunt.
-Elli and the others (their group of five) have to eat nauseating food to survive.
-There is a riot while they are sleeping and a young girl and her mother are shot.

4)Build- Elli is becoming strong and confident, she is believing that they will get out really soon. (95/3)

5)Predict- I think that their food is going to get worse and worse because now they have to eat worms. (102/5)

6)Connect- sometimes when I am expecting something or I hear rumors it turns out to be wrong. Like when she thought Hitler was dead. (119/2)

In response to Leah, I can also visualize the bloody, dead, smelly bodies'. If I would have really saw or smell that, I probably would've fainted or threw up.

1.Question: Page 80 paragraph 4: Why would the doctor tell Eli to lie about her age to save her life?

2.Predict: Page 98 paragraph 4: I predict that when Eli and her mom leave they won’t see Celia, Suri , and Hindi ever again.

3.Judge/Evaluate: When Eli tells her mom that there is a worm in her soup and her mom says “Nonsense! These are not worms. Eat and leave me alone.” I think she is putting aside properness and was on survival mode. This is a huge thing for her. She couldn’t be her finicky, proper self.

4.Visualize: Page 95 paragraph 2-4: I imagined Eli with her head held up with a crown of thorns on her head.( Her hair would be the thorns.) I also imagined her having blisters on her skinny shoulders. I also imagined her to be skin and bones.

5.Determined Importance: Page 104 Paragraph 3: I think when the civilians were lined up to be killed it was a huge thing. I think it was very important because it makes you the reader and the people in the book realize that it wasn’t just people in concentration camps being killed.

6.Summarize: Eli and her mom try to survive in the concentration camp. Then they find their family. Later they are shipped to Poland. Where they are served worms in there soup.

In reply to Jake, I think she waits until this point in the book to tell the readers about them because she wants to get everything out right way. I think she wants to tell her experience from the being to end l of how it happened. And my guess was she really didn’t find her cousins until later.

1)Build-Elli's mother isn't really a character that is builing, it's more like her character is withering away. She has gone from being an optimist to having no hope, struggling to find will to live, and sort of forgetting about her daughter at times. (119/1)

2)Connect-When I have to start something new that seems like a pain at first but then you get used to it and it just becomes a part of life. I connected this to Elli because she states how she beccame used to the hard floors and the food ect... (93/3)

3)Visualize- My mind created too vivid of an image when Elli was describing her blisters and apperence of herself and others. (95/3)

4)Question- Why do they keep transfering to different camps? It seems like every other chapter they are on a train to some new place.

5)Judge/Evaluate-It amazesme how ruthless these SS people are. Elli was already on the ground and that lady just kept beating her. (142/3)

6)Predict- I think that Elli will reunite with either her aunt or cousin. (118/2)

In response to Jake, I also visualized a strong image of the people who were marching in union, the book is so descriptive that you can really picture all of it.

    1) Question-Why are they branded with tattoos? (121,6)

    2) Connection- I made a connection between them getting tattoos with the slaves and the slave trade with them getting branded. (121,2)

    3) Predict- I predict that Elli’s mom will not survive because she has been up and down being weak and not caring sometimes. (117,6)

    4) Build- Elli is becoming more of a woman she is becoming stranger and more confident that she will survive through all the camps. (95,3)

    5) Infer- I think that Elli and her mom will be moving around to different camps.(118,2)

    6) Visualize- I can picture Elli getting beat up. The lady kicking her in the head and all over her body and punching her. I paints a clear picture in your mind just what SS guards could do to people. (142,5)

In regards to Sonya, I have the same question about why they keep moving them to different camps also. Also with Sonya I like how the author puts in every detail to show us just how horrific the whole experience was.

    1. Question- How did Elli escape from the line not going to Augsburg? (138, 5)
    2. Predict- Elli may get hurt because of the bruise because the guards said she had a week at most. (136, 4)
    3. Judge/Evalute- How can these SS people be so mean to innocent Jews? (142,5)
    4. Visualize- I can visualize the women coming into Auswhitz looking as though they are men. With there hair cut off and gray dresses. (80, 1)
    5. Connection- I see how it would have been a relief to Elli and her mom to have her sisters there with her, for mental support. (83,6)
    6. Build- You can tell that Elli is growing up. She is mature expecially when her mom gets hurt and she handles the situation very well considering her age and what is going on. (124, 6)

To respond to Makayla's question, I believe they are branded with tattos so it's easier to keep track of all of the people. It also make's them less human because instead of a name they call them by numbers. Hitler didn't believe that they should be qualified as humans.

    1) Question- I know it is water but if it is that dirty that people are getting sick from it why drink so much of it. (85,11)

    2) Connect- I can connect to this because I am in scouts. In scouts there is a thing that is called the order of the arrow. This means that if you are picked or elected that you have to give service for 12 hours strait without talking. (chapter 19-20,all)

    3) Predict- I am predicting that Hitler is not dead just because I know it wouldn’t happen so early in the book.(114, chapter heading)

    4) Visualize- I could just picture the dry parched flay lips of the inmates on the hot dry days.

    5) Determine importance-Determine importance note of importance is the fact that their commando was no decimated. (chapter 19-20, many times)

    6) Fix-up techniques- I had to look up decimate Deci- meaning 10 and mate like exterminate to kill.

To comment on Jaden’s post I can’t say or do anything to improving …..Thumbs up…

    1) Question- I wonder who all the civilians are and why they are all getting shot? (104/8)
    2) Connect- I’ve watched a movie about the Holocaust and I remember seeing the Jewish people in the camps having little numbers tattooed to their arms. (121/3)
    3) Predict- I predict that Elli and the rest of the other people are being sent to even a worst place than Auschwitz. (98/7)
    4) Build- At first Elli’s mom didn’t say much and was very nice but now she’s bitter even with her daughter. (102/5)
    5) Visualize- I can see a very clear picture in my mind of the little girl having her nightmare and screaming as the SS soldiers take her away. (91/5)
    6) Summarize- Hitler is not Dead
    * The swastika flag in the camp is lowered at half-mast and many of the people believe Hitler is dead.
    * They are brought to a train station and packed into wagons of 130 people.
    * It’s very hot and hard to breath in the wagon and some of them faint including Elli’s mother.
    * After two days of being on the wagon with no food or water they arrive back at Auschwitz.
In response to Connor, I believe they drank the filthy water because they have gone long without the slightest drop of moisture. Elli is described as having cracked lips and a film over her tongue. They will probably drink anything just to quench their thirst even if it doesn’t smell and taste the best.

    1) Question- (86,1) Why doesn’t the camp get water? Did it dry out? People could die from the swamp like water, if they choose to drink from it.

2)Predict- (99) I predict that a lot of people will die at the new camp or become very ill, if not already.

3)Jude/Evaluate- (101) The food with worms is disgusting. It could get the people sick, and the soldiers are treating them like dirt. Not many people are going to last.

4)Infer- (103) I think this camp will be even worse and harder on everyone. Not that they haven’t been beaten to the ground already.

    5) Visualize- (88) I can picture when the green slop that is suppose to be their meal in the filthy bowls. And how Elli was trying to shove it down her throat without puking.

6)Build-(101) I think Ellis mother has changed. Her mother was her normal self, but now a bitter hard person.

7)In response to Grant Werner- I think that the civilians may be captured Jews. I am also a bit confused but if I were to take a guess I would say captured Jews.

    2. Connect- I have felt this way before nothing to drink I am really hot and I can’t quench my thirst and sometimes I feel like passing out or fainting. (81/3)

    3. Visualize- it was so well said that I felt like I was in her shoes being hot and almost about to faint. (81/3)

    4. Predict- I think that she is going to live by lying and she will be put in a labor camp and she will live through all of this but her parents and siblings won’t. (80/4)

    5. Determine importance- It was important that they found that lake otherwise they would have died of not eating and also not having anything to drink. It was good for them to also find bread so they could get something to eat and not die. (85/3) (87/4)

    6. Summarize- This section was basically how they got taken away to Auschwitz and that they made it and didn’t die.

In response to Connor D they don’t really care if it is dirty or not it is water. It is all about survival to them but at least they will live with water and quench their thirst.

    3) Judge/Evaluate- It amazes me on how rude and careless these “SS” soldiers are. (142/3)

    4) Build- Elli is becoming really confident in convincing herself that they will get out real soon. (88/1)

    5) Infer- I think the Nazi’s just throw anything together for the Jews to eat, without care much. For example, Elli says there’s mud in the bread. (88/1)

    6) Visualize- I can picture the image of Elli swallowing hard, just to get the lump of food down. (88/4)
