1.Question- On page 162 in paragraph 7- How did Elli and her family find out that their father had died? Were there records kept from the camps because I thought that there was not?
2.Judge/Evaluate- On page 215 in paragraph 2- Before when Elli was trying to drive Bubi and her mommy away from America she said things like America will never be home. I think that Elli changed her mind when she thought about her father’s dream of Broadway and the tall sky scrapers. I also think that with the memory of her father she might feel like the whole family is together when they are in New York.
3.Build- Throughout the whole book- I found mommy changed from the beginning of the book to the end. In the beginning I thought that she was very judgmental of Elli, but after they went through the Holocaust together it seemed like she had more respect toward Elli. I think this because during the Holocaust they learned how to communicate better in harder times.
4.Visualize- On page 158 in paragraph 1- I am able to picture the SS Man that Elli claims looks like a goat. I can picture his large buck teeth, pointed chin, his head bobbing up and down when he walks, and his ludicrously elongated neck.
5.Determine Importance- On page 216 paragraph 2- When Elli’s mother states “Let’s go Elli, and gather our things. We shouldn’t be among the last ones to step ashore.” I find it a hopeful phrase through Ellie’s eyes because she said that like we’ve been through enough; we should be among the first to get a clean start.
6.Use Fix-up Techniques- On page 166 in paragraph 4- I came across the word “furtively”. I did not know what it meant, so I looked it up and came up with this- taken, done, used, etc., surreptitiously or by stealth; secret- Dictionary.com
Jayden Richards- 1st hour Honors English 1. Question- How did Elli’s brother not die after getting shot in the head? (187,1) 2. Predict- I predict that Elli will escape will her mom and brother. (174, 1) 3. Judge/Evaluate- The guards that were so nice to Elli before become so mean so fast. (146, 5) 4. Visualize- I can picture Elli, her mom, her brother, and the other girls sitting underneath the wagons while there is shooting going around everywhere.(190, 4) 5. Build- You can tell Elli is growing up by the way she is very calm during all of the shootings. (191, 3) 6. Summarize- In this chapter Elli and her mom go to another camp, where her brother is a fence away. It is near the end of the war and they are freed for a while they think. But, it was really just a huge trap. They get in the boxcarts and eventually they are free, but with no family to go back to. (204, 6) To respond to Amanda, I do not think there were records kept, but Bubi found out that his father had died from cattle dealer. Lunger and Weiss buried his dad with their own hands. (205, 1)
1.Question: Page 146 paragraph 6: Why would the guards ask them where there luggage was? Didn’t he know that they didn’t have any luggage?
2.Predict: Page 186 paragraph 4: I don’t think the whit Red Cross trucks are really Red Cross trucks. I think there fakes.
3.Build: Page 197 paragraph 1-5: My thoughts on Elli have changed over the course of this book. A first I thought of her as a victim. But now I think of her as a survived because she went through many horrible things and say many horrible things. For example Irene’s death and Lilli’s getting her leg blown off. But through all this she was able to make it to liberation day.
4.Visualize: Page 187 paragraph 1: I visualized that all around Eli there is blood. When she looks over at Bubi he has a gash on his head. The gash is bleeding badly. Bubi’s mom is cradling his head in her lap crying hysterically.
5.Determine Importance: Page 187 paragraph 3-4: These two passages are important because Eli has to make a choice to try and save her mother by making her leave Bubi so she can protect herself. Or let her mom and Bubi both die. This is important because she has to let her heart lead her to the right choice.
6.Summarize: Eli and her mom move to a different camp were they find out that Bubi is only across the fence. They are later moved again into box cars, where the Red Cross trucks are there telling them to hold out there bowls. When they do it’s a huge trap they start shooting, will the shooters leave they are left to die. The Allies are comes to find them and then they are liberated.
In reply to Jayden just because Eli’s brother was shot doesn’t mean he would die. He could have been grazed by the built. So the built just broke the surface of the skin.
1)Question- I wonder why the Jews get treated well at this camp? (145-149/All)
2)Predict- I predict that their heavenly experiences will end soon. (149/2)
3)Judge/Evaluate- I think it is good that the Jews get treated well. I think this because they were probably all down because of what was going on, and being treated well made the cheer up. (145-149/All)
4)Infer- The author uses comic relief during the bad times of the Holocaust. (148/6)
5)Visualize- I can see in my head how happy Eli is to have good food again. (149/All)
6)Summarize- 500 women arrive at Augsburg.
Everyone gets to shower with soap and hot water.
Everyone gets a two course meal.
Elli and her mom fall asleep in a bed with sheets. (This Must Be Heaven)
In response to Jayden, I don't think that Elli is grown up because she is used to shooting, I think she is just used to all of the violence going on around her.
Grant Werner- 3rd hour Honors English 1)Question- I wonder why the women from Auschwitz are being treated so nice at Augsburg? (149/9) 2)Connect- I remember reading a holocaust poem about the piles of shoes that were stripped from the Jews as well as other things like Elli’s jacket she got in Augsburg. (156/6) 3)Judge/Evaluate- The guards at Augsburg were really nice at first but they soon became mean and harsh when the SS guards arrived. (146/5) 4)Build- I thought that Elli’s situation would keep getting worse but it actually got a little better by getting nice rooms, showers, and real clothes. (155/2) 5)Infer- I’m guessing Bubi won’t last much longer if he can barely walk and he’s so thin. (171/6) 6)Visualize- I can clearly see the bright golden bird from Elli’s dreams from all the good descriptions. (164/3) In response to Eric, your infer was more of a judgment or evaluation because you didn’t make an educated guess by using the information from the book or outside information.
1. Question- why did they separate the girls by eye color into groups?(151/1)
2. Connect- I feel a connection in this paragraph because she is happy and jumping about being free and I have felt that like the end of a long school year I am excited that I don’t have to do any homework and I can relaxes.(181/3)
3. Predict- I predict that mommy is going to die of starvation and of her injury to her back. (161/4)
4. Judge/Evaluate- I think that they don’t think elli doesn’t tell him because she is sad of what happen to her and she has probably died at Auschwitz and she doesn’t want to think about it. (173/4)
5. Visualize- it seems that Bubi has a bad limp and an injury because it was so descriptive I could visualize someone really skinny and has a bad limp.(171/4)
6. Determine Importance- it is important that mommy gets food and water and if there isn’t water or food her injury could get worse and she might die of starvation or from her bad back.(179/2)
In response to Grant Werner i think that they were treated so nice is because they needed workers and if they died because they were treated bad they wouldn't have anybody to work for them.
1.Question- Did Bubi actually get shot in the head or just hit by something? And if he did get shot in the head, how did he live? (192/7)
2.Summarize- -Elli and her mom found Bubi at their new camp. -When they started hearing rumors about getting out they were put on a train with no food or water. -The red cross came by to give them food but it was just a Nazi trap. -The Americans attacked, and then the Allies found them and they got liberated.
3.Visualize- I can picture Elli on the floor covering her head with her soup bowl so she doesn’t hurt her head. (193/2)
4.Predict- I don’t think that Lilli is going to live because her leg is only hanging on by a piece of skin and she probably lost a ton of blood. (194/1)
5.Connect- I remember watching on the news and a movie where somebody got shot in the head and they still lived. But, they couldn’t talk or move so I don’t know how Bubi did it.
6.Infer- I don’t think that Bubi or their mom will last much longer if they don’t get liberated because they are injured, very thin, and all they do is sleep, they can barely move.
7.Question- What happened to Irene’s eyes? (202/4)
In response to Trevor, they separated them by eye color because he thought that the eye color showed how smart they were and he needed to find them all jobs based on intelligence.
Sonya Schuessler-3rd Hour Honors English-Mrs. Mayo
1) Question-Can you imagine how difficult it would be to move on after seeing that gory scene in person? How was she not be traumatized after that? (pg.188-189)
2)Connect-I kind of connected being cramped up into a boxcar to having four people in one seat on a school bus, except that the 100 person per boxcar is obviously alot worse. (179/1)
3)Visualize-I can pratically hear the sound of gunfire and see the bloodied cornfield. The author seems she maked sure she hadn't left out any details. (183/8)
4)Predict-I had predicted that Bubi would get either killed or injured and I was correct. (186/7)
5)Build-Elli has grown during her experiences and has become a survivor, not only looking out for herself, but for her mother and brother as well. (172/2)
6)Judge/Evaluate-Bubi seems to have lost his spark, it's like he's a horse that has been broken too the point that there isnt anything left of it. (170-172)
In response to Trevor's question, I think that one of the reasons was because Hitler's idea of a perfect race was people with blond hair and blue eyes, so if they had lighter colored hair or eyes I think they were considered smarter or something.
1. Question- Why was the German officer so respectful and polite toward Elli’s mother when they were marching? It is definitely different from her past experiences. Elli and her mother have always been poorly treated. (150/1-5)
2. Predict- When everyone arrives to Augsburg, each of them receive fresh towels, soap, and dumpling soup, their spirit is revived. I predict that from this point to the end of the book, everything will be positive. (151/1-7)
3. Judge/Evaluate- I think it was very brave of Elli to shove the SS guard who was hurting her mother. I think her emotions took over and she didn’t think about the potential consequences. (145/3)
4. Build- I thought that the switch to Augsburg was going to be a light at the end of the tunnel for Elli and her mother but, as I continue to read, it sounds like it’s getting worse. Elli says the food is getting worse, the sheets have been taken from their beds, and nobody is friendly and considerate like they use to be. (157/1-4)
5. Visualize- I could picture the look on Elli’s face when she found out she was wearing Leah Kohn’s coat. The guilt and shame resembled in her facial expressions would tell exactly how she felt. (161/1-5)
6. Determine Importance- It is very ironic that Elli’s father would die on the same night that Elli and her mother cry uncontrollably and endlessly, but, for a completely irrelevant matter. It’s almost as if the actions of Elli and her mother were foreshadowing his death. It was very creepy in a sense. (167/1-4)
In response to Sonya, I think that Elli wasn’t traumatized because she has already seen so many gory scenes and she isn’t phased by it as much anymore, she’s learned to deal with it.
1) Question- (147,7) Why does this German officer treat Elli’s mother and herself so kindly, then they treat everyone else like dirt.
2)Predict- (157) I predict that Elli might come across Leah Kohn. Because of her jacket, she might want to come across her. I think Elli also feels bad that the jackets and dresses were just taken from everyone, and given to them.
3) Judge/Evaluate-(180) I’m sure that this camp will be the one to destroy what’s left of everybody. Everyone is weak and skinny to bones.
4)Infer- (168) I think that if Elli and her mother want to see Bubi, fate will bring them together. If you truly love somebody, it can bring you together no matter how far apart you might be.
5) Visualize- (161,2) I can picture when the seven girls including Elli are stiff against the wall. It would be so painful on your body, and also not allowed to eat or drink.
6)Build-(148,2) I think they are treating everyone so well because they will have to work them to death, so they want them to get a little taste of freedom.
7)In response to Jake Letarski- I think the German officer so respectful and polite because he could of seen some kind of potential. Something maybe made Elli and her mother stand out from everyone else of the prisoners.
1) Question- I was confused when they said that Elli's mother didn't get bread rations because she was in the vegetable slicing commando so Elli and her mother had to share one bread ration but they still gave one to Bubi. This confuses me because i thought that they only had one bread ration? (172/2)
2) Predict- I predict that Elli and her family will like America. I feel that they will forget most of their scary past and leave it all behind them.
3) Build- I used to think that Elli's mother was unloving to Elli. She used to always say that Elli wasn't as good as Bubi and things like that. But now I am starting to change my opinion of Elli's mother. Some of the actions that her mother does are very motherly and loving. Now I can tell that Ell's mother really loves her. (N/A)
4) Infer- As a reader we all know that Elli's father has passed away in a camp, but Elli and her family don't know that. They think he is still alive. With how they talk about him like he's still alive, I think when they hear the news that he has died they will be crushed. (201/5)
5) Visualize- I can really picture Bubi walking away into the rainy twilight with his bony, skinny figure, a bad limp, and the can clanking with each step. (171/7-8)
6) Summarize- The chapter, "America, Will you be my Home?" was about Elli coming to realization how her heart belongs in Czechoslovakia, not America. She realizes that America will be a place where she wont be a native and she will be a stranger in a strange country.
In response to McKenzie, I think that they are treating everyone well because of what you said. I also think that they are treating them well because they aren't mean people because when they first got there, the officers were shocked that they were women and were being treated so poorly.
Sam Klimek- 5th Hour English 1)Question- I wonder why the Jews get treated well at this camp?
In response to Hannah Koepke, a lot of familys that where together knew nothing of other family members dieing so they could only hope that they where still alive
1. Question- How did Elli’s brother not die after getting shot in the head? (187,1) I had the same question as Jayden
2. Summarize: Eli and her mom move to a different camp were they find out that Bubi is only across the fence. They are later moved again into box cars, where the Red Cross trucks are there telling them to hold out there bowls. When they do it’s a huge trap they start shooting. The Allies are comes to find them and then they are liberated.
3. Judge/Evaluate- The guards at Augsburg were really nice at first but they soon became mean and harsh when the SS guards arrived. Like they have to look good and be perfect. (146/5)
4. Infer- Elli and her mom want to see Budi because they miss him. But fate and destiny will bring them all together again. (168 most of it)
5. Build- Elli has been a dynamic character changing a lot through this book. At first she was a victim. But because of all the horrible things she has been through she has had to grow up a lot in a short amount of time. (197, 1-2)
6. Predict- I predict that Elli will escape with her mom and brother. (174, 1)
In response to Sam Klimek- 5th Hour English. I agree with your prediction 100%. I predict that their heavenly experiences will end soon. (149/2). Also with Question- I wonder why the Jews get treated well at this camp? (145-149/All) I think they get treated well because well they just wanted them to feel alright before they have to go through terrible things and be happy for once.
1) Question- When Mommy read the number on her arm, Elli said she “stammered”. What does it mean to stammer when you talk? Is it like stumbling on your words? (147/6)
2) Connect- Leah Kohn’s coat reminded me of the shoe poem we read in class, both having to do with the Nazi’s taking the Jew’s (that had been murdered) belongings. (156/6)
3) Build- When Mommy dumped all the soup onto the bed on purpose, I think she broke under the pressure and stress like her sister did in the beginning of the book when they were in the ghetto. I can now see the difference and similarity of the sisters. (162/7)
4) Infer- As soon as Elli saw Leah’s name in the coat, I was inferring right away that the clothes were taken from the murdered Jews, without the author saying it. (156/5)
5) Visualize- When the officers did not believe that the Jews were women coming to the camp from Auschwitz, Elli described it as “a wave of disbelief ripples through”. I could see the look of their faces in my head. (146/5)
6) Use Fix-Up Techniques- I wasn’t sure what “Herr Offizier” meant, so I checked the glossary of the book. It is a proper term for a German official. (146/8)
In response to Makayla, I was wondering the exact same thing. One minute I was getting the idea that he was going to die, but then he was ok. The author didn’t talk about him too much, so I think their was a little bit of a gap there.
1) Question- Why do inmates of the concentration camps have to stand so long during role call otherwise known as Zahlappell? (All, Any)
2) Connect- When it said that she saw a golden bird flying above his head I can relate to this when my dad said “ hey Look at that golden bird” and it was in a tree over my head in Hawaii. (163, Chapter)
3) Predict- When the people thought they were free and ran off in to the valley can corn fields I knew this was a staging act before I even read this. (181,3)
4) Build-At first starting to read this book I thought Elli was a boring person but now my thoughts have changed. (168,3)
5) Determine Importance-I think it was important that they stayed up by the boxcar so the didn’t get killed. (183,6)
6) Use Fix-up Techniques- I haven’t read the book for a while so I re-read 10 pages.
Comment: In Regards to Leah’s post at fist for the use Fix up techniques I was going to use the same one but after that I ran in to another one so just keep doing every thing right.
1. Question- How did Elli and her mother find out her dad had died? (162/7)
2. Predict- I predict that by the end of the book, Elli and her mother are going to find Bubi, and there all going to survive. (all/all)
3. Judge/Evaluate- The leaders from the Augsburg were really nice and treated the Jews well, and then when the “SS” soldiers arrived, they were really mean. (146/5)
4. Infer- Elli and her mother want to see Bubi because they miss him but I think fate will bring them back together again as a family. (168/4)
5. Visualize- I could picture the look on Elli’s face when her mother dumps the soup out on the bed. (162/6)
6. Summarize- 500 women arrive at Augsburg Everyone showers with soap and hot water Everyone gets two course meals Everyone gets sheets on the bed, instead of sleeping on the plain wood
In response to Connor Dickinson, I was wondering the same thing, on why they had to stand so long. Maybe its because there's so many people to go through, and it takes longer.
1. Question- Did Bubi actually get shot in the head or just hit by something? And if he did get shot in the head, how did he live?
2. Predict- I predict that their heavenly experiences will end soon.
3. Connect- I feel a connection in this paragraph because she is happy and jumping about being free and I have felt that like the end of a long school year I am excited that I don’t have to do any homework and I can relaxes.(181/3)
4. .Visualize- I visualized that all around Eli there is blood. When she looks over at Bubi he has a gash on his head. The gash is bleeding badly. Bubi’s mom is cradling his head in her lap crying hysterically. (187/1)
5. Infer- I’m guessing Bubi won’t last much longer if he can barely walk and he’s so thin. (171/6)
6. Fix-up Techniques-I came across the word “furtively”. I did not know what it meant, so I looked it up and came up with this- taken, done, used, etc., surreptitiously or by stealth;- Dictionary.com (166/4)
In response to Angie i thought the same thing when i read this chapter of the book and it is a good question.
1. Question- How com Bubi, Elli’s brother, not die after getting shot in the head?
2. Predict- I believe that Elli will escape with her Mom and with her Brother
3. Connection- I can connect to when there were a lot of people in that box car to when we went on our trip to South Carolina the car was jam packed
4. Judge/evaluate- I think what Elli did to the SS soldier was very brave protection her mom
5. Visualize- I can clearly see Elli’s happiness when she got good food.
6. Build- At first when I started reading it I thought Elli was a kind of awkward person but I have changed my mind.
To Davia, I Don’t know which thing happened to Bubi but it hit him hard enough to put a huge gash in his head. I also thought the same thing about Bubi when you didn’t think he would last much longer, because when you lose a lot of blood you don’t feel good.
1)Question- Why was this camp, Michelwerke, such a more caring and polite camp to all the women Jews?(148/3-6)
2)Connection- One connection I had was when I was younger I too felt the same way as Elli, when she said her head feels like it weights a ton. Because I would get really bad headaches.(145/3)
3)Predict- I predict that all the women are going to be treated well and not as harsh as before. I predict this because of the way the German officer responded with all the luggage.(146/3-8)
4)Build- As soon as the Jews had been treated a little better I had thought that was going to last longer than it had. It surprised me when they're new things were taken away.(154/1-2)
5)Visualize- With the way Elli described her legs being wooden, spin a stripe of pain, and her stomach a ton of bricks, I could just imagine seeing her standing against the wall with a sore back, starving stomach, and non movable legs.(161/1)
6)Use Fix-Up Techniques- The whole chapter of Herr ZERKUBEL was a little confusing and I got lost a lot because it was talking about building this instrument and how each group took part in making it. Then I reread it to help me understand what was happening.(150/1)
In response to Bryce, I agree with your judgement about Elli being brave. I also think that it was good for Elli to be proud that she was still alive after that and that it gave her some hope.
Amanda King- 4th hour Mrs. Mayo

5)Infer- I’m guessing Bubi won’t last much longer if he can barely walk and he’s so thin. (171/6)
6)Visualize- I can clearly see the bright golden bird from Elli’s dreams from all the good descriptions. (164/3)
In response to Eric, your infer was more of a judgment or evaluation because you didn’t make an educated guess by using the information from the book or outside information.

Miranda Copa- 5th hour English
ReplyDelete1.Question- Did Bubi actually get shot in the head or just hit by something? And if he did get shot in the head, how did he live? (192/7)
2.Summarize-
-Elli and her mom found Bubi at their new camp.
Mayo
ReplyDelete1) Question-Can you imagine how difficult it would be to move on after seeing that gory scene in person?
Jake Letarski- 7th Hour English
ReplyDelete1.
McKenzie Kwick- 5th Hour English
ReplyDelete1) Question- (147,7) Why does this German officer treat Elli’s mother and herself so kindly, then they treat everyone else like dirt.
Hannah Koepke 1st Hour English
ReplyDelete1) Question- I was confused when they said that Elli's mother didn't get bread rations because she was in the vegetable slicing commando so Elli and her mother had to share one bread ration but they still gave one to Bubi.
Sam Klimek- 5th Hour English
ReplyDelete1)Question- I wonder why the Jews get treated well at this camp? (145-149/All)
2)Predict- I predict that their heavenly experiences will end soon. (149/2)
3)Judge/Evaluate- I think it is good that the Jews get treated well. I think this because they were probably all down because of what was going on, and being treated well made the cheer up. (145-149/All)
4)Infer- The author uses comic relief during the bad times of the Holocaust. (148/6)
5)Visualize- I can see in my head how happy Eli is to have good food again. (149/All)
6)Summarize-
500 women arrive at Augsburg.
Everyone gets to shower with soap and hot water.
Everyone gets a two course meal.
Elli and her mom fall asleep in a bed with sheets.
(This Must Be Heaven)
In response to Hannah Koepke, a lot of familys that where together knew nothing of other family members dieing so they could only hope that they where still alive
Makayla Pulver- 1st Hour- Honors
ReplyDelete1.
Leah Levy- 3rd Hour Honors English- Mrs. Mayo
ReplyDelete1) Question- When Mommy read the number on her arm, Elli said she “stammered”.

6. Summarize-
500 women arrive at Augsburg
Everyone showers with soap and hot water
Everyone gets two course meals
Everyone gets sheets on the bed, instead of sleeping on the plain wood
In response to Connor Dickinson, I was wondering the same thing, on why they had to stand so long. Maybe its because there's so many people to go through, and it takes longer.

ReplyDelete1)Question- Why was this camp, Michelwerke, such a more caring and polite camp to all the women Jews?(148/3-6)
