    1. Question-If the three thieves can get in and out of the ghetto how come Alex makes no attempt to escape? (91,2)
    2. Connect-I to do different things like holding my breath or looking another way when someone I don’t like walks by like Alex does. (60,3)
    3. Predict-I predict that Alex will get in some kind of trouble and will have to ask Bolek for help because Alex has his address. (70,5)
    4. Judge/Evaluate-I don’t think that Alex should be talking to the little girl because I’m scared her father will hurt Alex or worse kill him because he wasn’t nice to Alex at all last time and he wanted to kill him. (63,1)
    5. Infer-I’m guessing that Alex is good at and enjoys puzzles and solving puzzles because of the massages he’s leaving for his Dad. (80,3)
    6. Visualize-I can picture how Alex set up the ladder and how he planned to hid it during the day. I also can picture what the ladder looks based on how Alex describes it and the material it’s made of. (76,4)

    1. Question: I wonder how the Germans know about the Bunkers below the building. (81/1)
    2. Visualize: On page 81 paragraph 2 I could just imagine what is going on in the bunker. The big explosion and the screaming.
    3. Predict: I predict that the Germans will soon catch Alex. Because the Germans are searching every in the building.
    4. Build: I think Alex is smart for what he does, because he builds a ladder to make to go the top floor and when to do it. (72/2+3)
    5. Use Fix-Up Techniques: I got confuse how he worked the larder in p73 paragraph 3 and 4 and page 77 paragraph 1, but I kept on reading over again and it was actually really smart.
    6. Summarize: Basically in ch11 its basically talks about how the Germans found a bunker full of Jews. When the Germans were gone Alex took some of the Jews food and tools to help him.

  3. I think to answer Logan’s Question, Alex have been living in his hiding place for mouths and he doesn’t need to escape because he was told to stay until his father came and also he hasn’t been caught.

    1) Question-pg56 paragraph 1 why were there so many gun shots.

    2) Predict-pg 56 paragraph 1 I think that the green police are finding Jews that didn’t lave the ghetto because they would rather try to get away than just go to the camps with out trying to do something.

    3) Judge-pg 57 paragraph 3 I don’t think it is a good idea for Alex to be moving around so much like going down to the factory to get rope to make a ladder to get up to the forth floor because it leaves him with a grater chance of being caught.

    4) Summarize-during the section two reading Alex is hiding in the ghetto to escape having to go to a Jewish camp so now Alex is all by him self witch he thinks until he herd all of the gun fire and explosions and people yelling and screaming so then Alex knows that the police are looking for Jews so he makes a escape wrought just incase they find where he is at.

    5) Visualize- I could see Alex trying to get the rope and building the ladder

    6) Build I think that Alex has gotten keener because he thought of what would he do if they came for him and I do think the other Jews planed on getting caught so they didn’t think of it.

To Hou Xeng Yang question I think that the Germans know about the people hiding in the bunkers because of when the people got on the train some of the Jews could of told the Germans where they are to try to get out of going to the camps

    1) Question- Who was the large man that was dragging Martha away? (60/3)

    2) Connect- The advice that Alex’s mom gave to him reminds me of the advice that my grandma gave me, “ Only trust people you know by heart.” (69/1)

    3) Predict- I predict that the Gryns were found by the Nazi soldiers and were taken away. The reason is because when Alex fell upon Yossi’s bag when Alex was down in the bunker. (67/2)

    4) Build- Since Alex had met the doorman I think that Alex feels more comfortable and safer when he needs help so he can rely on him. (69/1)

    5) Visualize- I can really capture a mental picture of how the German solider fell down and died. (98/2)

    6) Determine Importance- I think that it is important to get rid of the dead German soldiers body and hide it so the no one would come by and investigate and see what happened and how it happened. (101/3)

In response to Tyler Gilles’s question- I believe that the gun shots could have been Nazi soldiers shooting at Jews that they had found trying to escape the ghetto.

    1) Question: How did a woman screaming giv Alex an idea on how to make the rope ladder without anyone seeing him? (58,3)

    2) Connect: When Alex says he is going to make a rope ladder it reminds me of when I read a book in 6th grade about an outlaw hiding from the police and trying to find a hiding spot so he will not get caught and sent to jail. (57,5)

    3) Predict: I predict that when Alex is going back in time seeing Boruch and him talking about the lucky/unlucky number 13 that the number 13 may end up playing a big role at the end of the book. (74,3)

    4) Infer: When Alex shoots the pistol at the wall scaring the man dragging Martha away and he runs away, I think he will notify the police people are still in the ghetto. (60,5-7)

    5) Visualize: I can see Alex looking at the Polish side and seeing the people living there and then him telling Snow about his “Home” having 2 barders and a terrace full of birds. ( 78,1)

    6) Determine Importance: I think that pg 84 paragraph 5 is important because when the officers dynamite the entrance to the hidden hideout the rubble may clog the doors and Alex may never be able to the his big apartment place. (84,5)

In response to Mitchel- I also had that question about who that man was dragging Martha away.I just figured that it could have been a policeman taking her away. It also may have been a thief who just saw Martha and didn't want her to say anything about what he was doing so he wanted to kidnap her so no one would know he was stealing stuff.

    1. Question: I am confused, after Alex moved, was he living in the same building just a different hiding spot or in a whole different area/building? (74/8)

    2. Judge/Evaluate: Throughout the beginning of Section Two I think that Alex is becoming too familiar with being in hiding to the point of where he is not being as careful as he should be. The author seems to describe Alex as being active/loud. (Chapters 8-13)

    3. Connect: This book reminds me of Among the Hidden because the boys are both young and both very smart kids. Many adults are being found in the Ghetto and Alex has somehow kept himself away from being found just like in the Among the Hidden series. (Chapters 1-14)

4.Visualize: For some reason I could really visualize when Alex was talking to Bolek in the courtyard. I imagined a man and a boy sitting in a small fenced in area where the man is sitting on the abandoned chair. I don't know exactly what a courtyard looks like but that is what I visualize. (69/2)

    5. Determine Importance: I think that for sure the part of this book worth reviewing is when the author is explaining how Alex is building with rope. I know that I got confused on what Alex was making and the setting of where he was making it so I think people should read that part more carefully or read it twice. (Chapters 8-13)

    6. Summarize: While Alex was searching for more equipment for his hideout, he came across a shreik coming from a young girl. When he knew she was in trouble he pulled out his fathers pistol and shot at the man that was hurting the girl, who he later found out was an old friend Martha. He missed the man but the man ran away in fear and he saved Martha. (Chapter 8)

Jordan, I think your prediction is a really good prediction and I didn't think about that until I read yours. I also (now) agree that the number 13 will show up in the future.

1)Predict- I predict that when the German soldiers and Polish policeman were searching where Alex was staying he felt a lot of fear. If I was in a situation like that many thoughts would be going through my mind about if I were to get caught and what would happen to me.(56,57/1,2)

2)Determine Importance- When Alex shot at the large man with his pistol it showed that he was starting to be more mature I find this important during this scene because for an 11 year old to have that much guts it pretty strong of him. (60/3)

3)Question- Does Alex think about the consequences if he gets caught when he is going to the rope factory? (63/1)

4)Connection- When Alex first starts sawing he doesn’t have a total consistency level. I can relate this to my own life. For example when I first learn how to do something new I’m a little shaky with it and don’t feel too confident.(71/1)

5)Visualize- When the German men came to check out the cellar I could visualize them hammering and picking on it, it crumbling and showering to the ground. (80/2)

6)Fix Up Techniques-When I first read the paragraph about what one of the women did every morning I got confused about the describing words the author used while explaining her slippers. He said they were “tattered”. I looked that up on dictrionary.com and learned that it meant ragged or torn.(88/3)

Cara- To answer your question I believe it was the same building just a different level or part of it. I think this because while reading about the men that went and searched the cellar the book says that Alex says “could it be that under the floor of the cellar in which I lived for twelve days was a bunker with people in it?” There it says I lived so it makes me think he’s in the same building.

      1. Question-What do you think would've happened to Alex if he wouldn't have switched hiding places, and the German soldiers would have found him? (80/3)

      2. Connect-This book can connect to The Diary of Anne Frank in many ways. Both Alex and Anne had to go into hiding, but they also differ from one another. This is because when Anne went into hiding she had her family with her, while Alex is all alone. (Any page)

      3. Predict-I think that within the next chapters, one of the four people who know about his hideout are going to tell someone else. It just might be like a snowball effect, and eventually someone will tell one of the German soldiers, who may or may not take him away to a camp along with the other two hideaways. (112/13)

      4. Judge/Evaluate-I think that it was a good idea for Alex to change hiding places. I think this because if he would’ve stayed in his old hiding place in the cellar, he most likely would’ve been killed or taken to a work camp much like the people that were taken away on page 81. (Pages 72-73).

      5. Visualize- When Alex was looking out the air vent into the Polish neighborhood, I could really see in my mind everything that he was describing. The author did an extremely good job telling details about each specific person, and the actions that they made every day repeatedly. (All of chapter 12)

      6. Determine Importance- I think that in chapter 14, when Alex goes to get the Doctor from the Polish neighborhood was extremely important to the story line. This event could lead to either many tragedies, or it could lead to Alex, Freddy, and Henryk getting more help in surviving from the Doctor and his wife. In other words, Alex’s whole plan to wait for his father could either completely fall apart, or it could slowly piece itself together even more than it has been in the past chapters. (All of chapter 14)

Allie- To answer your question, I don’t think that Alex was thinking about the consequences. Somewhere in the back of his mind he probably knew that they would be very serious ones, even to the point of death if caught by the Germans, but I think that his main focus at the moment was to get himself into the new hiding place so he would be more safe then he already was in the cellar.

    1) question- When the people were in the cellar below him wouldn't he be able to smell the food they were cooking? (Pg 82 paragraph 3)

2)connect- When the Germans searched #78 it reminded me off when the cops have to search for things in homes. (80,2)
3)predict- I predict that the man will tell him were the secret passage way is.(70,4)
4)judge/evaluate- I wonder if the people that were below Alex ever heard him? I think they might have. (81,4)
5)infer- I think that Henrky is going to die because they probable won't get bullet out. (105,3)
6)use fix-up techniques- I am confused on how the later will work that Alex made I reread it over but am still confused. (59,4)

Allie- when I was at that scene I thought the same way! He must have been terrified because if his dad comes to get him he will think he is dead.

    1. Question-Why were there gunshots? (56/1)

    2. Infer-I am answering my own question but I am inferring that they found someone hiding in the ghetto and they shot the person. (56/1)

    3. Connect-When Alex describes the fairytale he knows and I can connect because my little cousin always wants me to read fairytale books to her and when Alex describes them thats a very common thought of what a fairytale is. (58/1)

    4. Predict-I think Alex will go through with his plan and have some very close encounters while he treis to execute his plan but in the end he will still make it. (59/1,2,3)

    5. Summarize- Alex's hiding place is searched but they dont find him. He thinks of a plan for a better hidding place and heads off for the rope factory to get supplies. He encounters a little girl and a man and he shoots his pistol. He has a conversation with her and then heads off to the factory. (Chapter 8)

    6. Visualize-I can picture the faces of the people who had been caught and how the children were screaming. I can then get the image of how they were lined off and shot. (80/81)

Carly, I dont think they could smell the food because of all the floor in between and there were all the boards so I dont think they could smell it since he was underground.

    1. Question- Who were the people who were hiding in the hidden bunker? (81/4)

    2. Predict- I think that Alex will find the secret passage out of the ghetto that Bolek had talked about and go visit him for some time. (70/4)

    3. Judge/Evaluate- I think Bolek is trustworthy because he didn't really think Alex was too much of a threat. I also think he is trustworthy because he didn't hurt Alex. (pages 68-70)

    4. Visualize- When Alex went into the hidden bunker, I could visualize a long room with several tables, a pantry, a bathroom, and a shower. I could also imagine the games where he said they were. (82/3)

    5. Determine Importance- I think Alex getting up to the fourth floor of the bombed building is good because of all the Germans and policemen coming into the ghetto and searching for people that should be taken away. (80/2-3)

    6. Summarize- In chapter 12, Alex tells about what life is like on his new hideout with Snow, his pet mouse. He tells all about the people on the Polish side he has watched and what everyone does in their daily lives. He even admits to having developed a crush on a girl who does her homework.

Derek, I think there were gunshots because maybe some people were refusing to come out of the bunker and be taken away so that could be just one possibility.

3)Predict- i predict the police will pass right by Alex
4)Judge- i judge the will not see alex

6)Visualize- i can visualize the police standing in the building

1)Question- why is this book call the island on bird street?

2)Connect- I disobey my parents once.

3)Predict- The man who was holding the child arm was, like you might get hit by a bomb, the child ran away and the next thing you know I think he got hit by a bomb.

4)Infer- "Be kind but trust only yourself" pg 31 top. I heard of that before. I think it means to like things are bad right now so people changes even though they look nice there gonna lie to you and stuff so only trust yourself.

5)Visualize- I can imagine the Germans dropping bombs to the enemy.

      6) Determine Importance- "Be kind but trust only yourself".
