    1. Question-How will Alex survive if his kerosene or other supplies like food run out? (155,2)
    2. Connect-I to have gotten in big trouble for breaking my curfew just like Stashya but it was my parent’s curfew and was not as dangerous as breaking the Nazis curfew. (137,8)
    3. Predict-I predict that something will go wrong on Alex’s date with the girl he likes because going on the polish side is dangerous, and she might be a rat or her parents might be rats. (126,8)
    4. Judge/Evaluate-I think Alex is crazy and he should take the life with Bolek and stop waiting for his father because I don’t think he’s coming. (128,1-2)
    5. Determine Importance-I think that it’s really important how protective Stashya’s mother is because she wouldn’t be happy if she knew who Alex is. (144,11)
    6. Summarize-In chapter 15 the doctor that Alex has been watching is going to help Henryk with his gun shot. Alex helps with the operation and the doctor is impressed with Alex’s ability to handle the blood. At the end of the chapter the doctor is taken from his house by the Gestapo and Alex suspects a rat.

      1) Question- Why is this book call "The Island on Bird Street"?

      2) Connect- The main Character did something he wasn't suppose to do? He disobey his parents, I did the same thing too.

      3) Predict-The man who was holding the childs arm was like dont go, you might get hit by a bomb, at the end the boy ran away and looked back, the man and his house was gone a bomb hit him first.

      4) Infer- When his mother told him to "be kind but trust only yourself" i think she means to trust yourself, because of the war you cant trust anybody that there gonna do this and that?

5)Visualize- I can imagine the Germans dropping bombs to the enemy.

      6) Determine Importance- I thought this word was pretty strong, " Be kind but trust only yourself"

      1. Question-Why do they need to hand over the ghetto side to the Poles if there’s already enough room for them on the opposite side of the wall? (148/7).

      2. Predict-I predict that Alex will probably never see Stashya again, because I’m guessing that he’ll soon be captured towards the end of the book. (145/2).

      3. Judge/Evaluate-Although Alex was having fun with his new friends from the Polish side, I don’t think that it was a good idea to continue going over there. It was extremely risky for Alex to go over there in the first place, but going over there another time probably wasn’t the best idea. (141/1).

      4. Visualize-When Alex was eating the food, stuffing it into his face, I could really visualize all of the food sitting on a table as Alex ate handfuls at a time. I could also picture in my mind Bolek and his wife whispering about Alex while he ate the food that they were supplying for him. (127/12).

      5. Determine Importance-I think that when Alex’s dad finally comes back to him is extremely important, because honestly I didn’t think that he was going to come back. It’s really important and heart-warming because many people probably thought that his father didn’t survive, but as everyone who read it saw, he eventually did come back. (160/3).

      6. Summarize-In this section, Alex learns that he can have fun without being caught, but he also discovers that he has to say goodbye to some good friends that he’s made throughout his survival. As he continues to try to survive, he has help from many different people and he ends up getting the doctor in trouble on the way. In the end, it’s a happy story because his dad comes back to find him, and everyone ends up feeling relieved.

Lou Lee, I think that the book is called “The Island on Bird Street” because of the street that Alex lives on for the duration of his stay, but also because while he’s trying to survive he feels like he’s on an island. He’s away from people for a majority of the time, so much of it probably felt like he was on a deserted island on his own.

    1) Question- Why would the policeman only want to take the doctor and no his wife? (119/2)

    2) Connect- When Alex ate at Boleks house and stuffed himself with food, It reminds me of when I went to my cousins restaurant in Illinois. I had a foot long beef sandwich, a medium soda, and a half a basket of cheese fries. It was amazing. (127/4)

    3) Predict- I predict that the wound that is on Henryk will not heal properly and would become worse and worse. (117/1)

    4) Judge/Evaluate- Based off of the bully’s actions towards Alex, he seems mean, disrespectful, and cruel to anyone or anything. (121/3)

    5) Build- Now that Stashya told Alex that she was a Jew too, Alex feels more relaxed when he talks about himself to her and comfortable when he goes to the Polish side because she is someone that he can rely on. (137/3)

    6) Visualize- I can get a mental picture in my head when the clouds of smoke hover over the city and the flames glistening in the night. (117/2)

In response to Lou Lee’s Question, I believe they called the book “ The Island on Bird Street” is because that is the street that Alex had to go into hiding.

    1) Question- who has the food to give the jews in the ghetto.

    2) predict- the man that alex had had to go threw at the gate i think that he is a german and is going to tell the others how many are still left in the ghetto.

    3) visualize- i can see alex looking for a basket and running out to get food and getting stopped by the door man.

    4) connect- as alex tries to get past the guard once i tried to sneak some thing past my parents and got caught.

    5) summarize- i think the section is about how alex could take care of the people and also the blood.

    6) judge- i think that alex is doing the right thing in not trying escape with the others and also alexs dad told him he would be back to get him .

Lou Lee- i think the title is called the "island on bird street" because alex is alone on witch to seem as a island because around him is polish houses so he has a small place to be on so he doesnt get caught moving around in the ghetto

    1) Question: Why did Alex just now reveal his passion to become a doctor when he grows up.(115,2)

2)Predict: I predict that if Alex's family or family member comes back he will tell them about hos he wants to be a doctor.

3)Infer: I think ;if Alex leaves to hang out with Stashya something might happen to 1 of them.(126,6)

    4) Visualize: I could really see Alex looking into Stashyas house and see the lights off with his binoculars and talking to snow while doing it. (138,1)

    5) Determine Importance: When Alex and Stashya are talking about how Stashya's mom is protective I think it is good to be protective about curfew because that is important for Jews because if they are caught bad things happen. (137,6)

6)Summarize: This ending part of the Island on Bird Street is mainly about how Alex tries to stay safe and make sure he doesn't get caught. During this time he goes over to the polish side many times and ends up playing with boys along with meeting a pretty girl named Stashya. Their friendship is good and they also figure out that both of them are Jewish.

Tyler Gilles- I like how you predicted that the guy at the gate is German because this would be a big thing and then Alex would be taken away. I was wondering though, would it be illegal to take money from people as a guard man when he really is a German?

    1. Question: I wonder If Alex is falling in love with Stachya? (135/5)

    2. Predict: I Predict that Alex is going to have a fight with Wlodek because he was picking on Alex. (134/4)

    3. Build: since Alex knows that Stachya’s a Jew their relationship might become harder or may be stronger. (137/2)

    4. Visualizes: I can almost see our hear what Alex is hearing at night when im reading this. (117/2)

    5. Connect: When he meets his father I kind of reminds me when I miss my dad and she him again I feel happy. (160/3)

    6. Judge/ Evaluate: I think that if Alex keeps one hanging with Stachya, she will get punished by her parents. (137/6-7)

To answer Jordans question I think he had to because Henryk was in pain and Alex had to do something

    1. Question- What I would like to know is what happened to Bolek and his wife?

    2. Predict- I think that if there had been a sequel, that Stashya and Alex would have met again at the Red Cross.

    3. Judge/Evaluate- I think when Stashya's mom is being overprotective is good in a time period like World War II. Its good that she worries about her child being out so they don't get caught because they are Jewish.

    4. Visualize- When the wall between the ghetto and the Poles side was being torn down, that I could really see it being taken apart.

    5. Determine Importance- I think that the way
Alex says good bye to Stashya is important. It shows that he really does care for her, even if they are both young.

    6. Summarize- In the very last chapter, Chapter 12, Alex starts to lose hope that his father will ever come back. The Poles have already moved into the ghetto and its the middle of winter. Soon his father comes back and finds him and they are reunited.

Hou Xeng Yang, I think that Alex and Stashya's relationship would become stronger rather than harder because now they have a common interest.

    1) question-What is Palestine? (pg117,6)

    2) connect-My grandpas barn calapsed because of the heavy snow like the buildings floors. (pg.155,2)

    3) predict-I predict that Alex will be going to the doctors house often and talk to the girl. (pg.114-116 throughout those pages)

    4) judge/evaluate-I think that the bully will get that Alex does not belong their and tell the german soldiers. (pg. 124, 8)

    5) Build- At first I thought that he would have left then I thought that he will not leave and stay like his father had said. (pg.128,2)

    6) Visualize-I can visualize the doctor taking the built out of his friends shoulder and the doctor thinking he will not be able to stand watching it. (pg.115,7)

Julie- I was also wondering what happened to them. I guessed that they were taken off to we're the soldiers stayed and forced to tell them how he got to the other side. Then the soldiers went and closed the tunnel so no one could enter anymore.

1- Question- Why didnt he go out of his hiding place if he knew his dad was in there? (158/8)

    2. Visualize-I can picture how Alex's facial expression and emotions would be that he could finallybdo something normal and play soccer with the other boysbinstead of being cooped up all day. (123/)

    3. Predict- I predict that Alex will finally get to meet the girl he always sees and will really start to like her and he will do almost anything to try to see her. (125/4)

    4. Build- Alex really trusts his father and that he will come back and he is now finally proving that trust by being loyal to his father and staying in his own hideout.

    5. Connect- I can connect to Alex's decision of being loyal to his dad because if something like that happened to me and one of my parents had a plan I would stick to it because you really never know who you can trust

    6. Summarize- Alex starts worrying that if his dad doesn't come soon he won't make it through the winter. Alex hears two men enter the building and he recognizes one of the voices. The voice is Alex's dad. His dad finally finds him and they are reunited.

Carly, I really cannot answer your question. I can't infer or make an educated guess on what the Palestine is. Sorry.

    Hour 1-Honors English
Question: When the Polish move into the ghetto Alex doesn't seem worried about running out of food or supplies but other things, why is that? 150/3

    2. Predict: I predict that now Alex's father will return because this book has given us so much information on Alex's survival skills that I think there will be suspense until the end. ALL/ALL

    3. Judge/Evaluate: I think that Bolek is so generous for doing all he and his wife did for Alex. They offered him a home and even risked themselves to give him food. I think that if Alex had to thank anyone the most, they would be one of the people he should have thanked first. 128/2

    4. Connect: I can connect to Alex making a code for communication with Stashya because when I was younger my friends and I would make codes just for fun. But this time Alex made a code for actual communication and it reminds me of what I did when I was little. 140/3

    5. Visualize: I can picture Alex and Stashya ice skating because the author described it very well and also described how the skates were made in the shoes very well. 142/5

    6. Summarize: Now that the only friend Alex could trust, Stashya is gone, Alex is losing hope of ever getting out of his hiding spot and espically, ever seeing his father again. When Alex hears voices above, he listens and realizes that the voice are coming from his father. He jumps out of his hiding spot to greet his father and his fathers friend. Chapter 20

  10. Allie Fontana- 5th Hour English

1.Connection- When Alex was describing the doctor he said he looked different, it was like he was a new man, he had always seen him with the doctors case. I can connect to that because once you get use to seeing something a certain way it’s hard to see the change. For example my sister had to get all of her hair shaved for surgery when I went to visit her she didn’t look like how I had seen her last it was almost a completely new her. (119/2)

2.Visualize- When Alex runs into the girl I can picture him doing it and seeing her almost crying and want to cry himself because of how awful he feels for it. (125/3)

3.How is it fine for Alex to go to the park with Stashya in the snow but not in the rain? (126/4)

4.Build- At first is seemed like Alex really wanted to see the girl he had been looking for but then when he runs into her my thoughts on that changed because he started to reject her and put there little gathering off until Monday. (126/3)

5.Judge/Evaluate- When Alex was talking to Stashya and thought that her eyes where sparkling while she was listening I would think this would be a very important thing to him and make him feel like she really cares. (137/3)

6.While reading what the policeman were doing in the ghetto and knowing what our policeman do in situations makes me want to guess that Alex would be just as afraid of them as a kid would be today.

Derek-For your prediction at first I didn’t think he had those type of feeling for her because when he ran into her he rejected what she wanted to do with him but towards the end I guess he really did want everything he could have to do with her.
