Hour 4 1)Question-Why did krol have to die in the sewers?(11/2) 2)Connect-The money that is shaken from that jew felt wrong in his pocket his conscience was telling him that it was wrong to steal.just like me and anyone else that has a conscience will feel wrong and feel like you should do right the wrong.(28/2) 3)Predict-Since Marek is claustrophobic I think that at some point his step father will now about his phobia maybe a tunnel will collapse.(8/4) 4)Judge/Evaluate-Marek Must be smart not to believe the total lies about the jew said by the the Germans as propaganda.(15/3) 5)Build-I thought Marek was a average good 14 year old kid but now i see he’s a mencis stealing.(24/2) 6)Infer-Since Anthony comes home every Sunday drunk/wasted at the tavern. I think that one week he will do something really stupid that may hurt someone.(54/3)
(1. Question: I was/am wondering why the Jew looked like he was running away, or was in a rush somewhere, when Marek and the two boys took money from him. I used this strategy because I was a bit confused on why the man was in such a hurry. (27/3)
(2. Connect: I think this part of the book relates with other books or like movies because in movies people are told they’re too scared to do something, and are pressured to do things they don’t want to do. In the book Marek is told that, “He’s still just a baby,” by Wacek one of the older boys. That’s what makes him change his mind. So then he agrees to take money from the Jew. I used this strategy because I can relate it to other stories in books and movies. (26/6)
(3. Predict: I predict that towards the end of the book they’re going to get caught by someone, when they’re going into the sewers to do some smuggling. (11/3) Knowing that someone already followed them, could make you think there will be others that will follow them also. I used this strategy because I feel this is what’s going to be happening towards the end of the book.
(4. Build: I wondered in the beginning about what happened to Marek’s father, but then as I later on read, his father died when he was four years old. I always just thought that his father just left him when he was younger. I used this strategy because I learned on about what happened to his father. (38/4)
(5. Visualize: On this part of the story, I could really picture how the scene would look like because of how the author described the place. The author said, “The place was wet, slippery, and smelly, and there were fumes rising in the shaft of light from Antony’s lamp.” He used details on how it looked. I used this strategy because when I read that part I could visualize it. (7/2)
(6. Summarize: Marek’s father died when Marek was very young. He is told he has to help his stepdad Antony smuggle things in the sewer. Marek is bossed around by two older boys, to take money from an Jew.
Andrew Fromfeld: I agree with you on number six of your post. I think Antony will do something crazy because he's so wasted and drunk. Going on with what you said, I also think that he might wander off somewhere maybe, and Marek probably won't be able to find his stepdad.
Seth Laurent Hour 7 1)Question- Why would Antony want to help the Jews in the Ghetto by selling them food? And where does Antony get the money to buy the food to sell to the Jews? And how long has Antony been selling food to the Jews Illegally? (4/3)
2)Connect- When Antony and Marek sell the food to the Jews in the Ghetto it reminds me of our country donating food for other countries in need. Like when a natural disaster happens or even like when we sent food to the troops in Afghanistan when we went to war. (Page 5)
3)Predict- I think the word is going to get out that Marek and his step-father are selling the food illegally soon because someone has to see them eventually and they can’t hide it forever.(page 55)
4)Judge/Evaluate- I think Antony is very stressed and angry because he gets drunk a lot and he’s stressed because he helps the Jews in the Ghetto a lot and he also has to worry about Marek and his mom because they could still get caught as well as he could.
5)Infer- It said on (55/1) that Antony was a sozzled caveman, which I think means he was irresponsible and gets drunk and doesn’t really care if he does.
6)Visualize- I’m wondering how big the sewer system is and how big is the inside of the sewer since its saying that Marek get claustrophobia some times when he’s in the sewer?
Seth Laurent-to Andrew Fromfeld's Question - Krol died in the sewer because Antony and Marek wouldn't have got away because they were being blackmailed. So they killed him there. It was also good because then no one would know that he got killed.
1. Question- Why does Antony get drunk at the tavern once a week? I know he isn’t allowed to get drunk all the time, but why only once a week? Why not twice? 2. Visualize- I can visualize the sewage that is described. 3. Predict-I think that Marek and Antony are going to be blackmailed later on. 4. Build- I thought Antony seemed nice at first, but when Marek described things that happened later on, he seems like he’d be pretty mean. 5. Infer- I infer that Antony is a ‘caveman’ because he likes to get drunk and doesn’t seem very nice. 6. Judge/Evaluate- I think we should learn less about Marek’s family, and learn more about him. In reply to Maysee Lao’s question: I think the Jew was running away because he didn’t want to be seen by police or other people to see him because he didn’t want to be recognized as a Jew.
Anothony gets drunk once a week because his wife made a deal with him that he is only allowed to drink once a week. So on Sunday the day he is allowed to drink he gets really drunk
1. I think that many people during this time wanted to help the Jews but were to scared to do anything in fear for their own lives so they just stood by and did nothing just like Marek. He at first didn’t like the Jews but then he found out he was one himself and started feeling even worse for them but he doesn’t do anything about it. Pg34
2. I am wondering how the Jew that Marek and the two boys mugged looked like he was running when Marek and the two boys took money from him. I used this strategy because I was a bit confused on how the man looked like he was in such a hurry. Pg27
3. I think this part of the book relates with things in real life that people experience and what peer pressure does to kids and how it makes them do things they would have never done otherwise. In the book Marek is told that, “He’s still just a baby,” by one of the older boys. That’s what makes him change his mind. So then he agrees to mug the Jew. I used this strategy because I can relate it to things that happen to people all the time. Pg26 4. I think that the Jew that Marek helped escape the street and who was doing the cross backward will end up hiding with Marek’s family . 5. I am impressed with how Marek made it through the sewers without complaining to his step-father at all. He didn’t think he was strong enough to get through the sewer but he made it through not even complaining about all of the work and hardship he had to go through.
6. Marek is just a average German boy during World War II until he finds out his step father is smuggeling supplies into the jewish ghettos. Joining him in the smuggling Marek helping his step father sees first hand what the jewish ghettos are like.
Justin Mulder Period 1 1—Question—(Page 6/Paragraph 4) How many other inhabitants of the Jewish Ghetto have secret sewer tunnel entrances/exits located hidden in their houses? 2—Connect—(Page 4/Paragraph 1) I’ve read and heard about how bad life was while being forced to live in the Jewish Ghettos during the Holocaust 3—Predict—(Page 48/Paragraphs 3-4) I think Antony’s and Marek’s relationship will take a long time to develop because of Marek’s attitude toward his stepfather. Maybe if Antony would try harder and not force rules upon his stepson they would get along better, but regardless of what either of them does it will take some time before they are treating each other like father and son. 4—Judge/Evaluate—(Pages 34-35) Marek is a very religious and usually honest person. He hates lying to his mother because he knows she always finds out the truth. He is very close to the bible and is very self conscious. 5—Visualize—(Page 7/Paragraphs 2-3) I can picture Antony and Marek trudging through out the sewer and having to crawl through the narrow and cramped tunnels to get to where they retrieve the smuggled goods from. 6—Summarize—(Chapter 4/Pages 36-43) In this chapter Marek’s mother talks to Marek about his father and what he was like. She mentioned he was a part of the Communist Party but didn’t particularly admire that kind of a living style. In the end of the chapter, she mentioned how Marek’s father was shot and killed during an attempted prison break
In reply to Alex, I agree with you're fifth comment about how it's impressive how he made it through the sewers without complaining at all. He must have really wanted to impress him by showing he is more of a man than a child
Kari Jirik Hour 1 1. Question-10/4 Would I have told the police that my stepfather had killed a man in the sewers? I think that I would have, even though we would have been caught for smuggling items to the Jews. If I were Marek, I would feel horrible for Pan Krol's family.
2. Connect-44/2 I, like Marek, did not realize that Jesus and Mary were Jewish. I was very surprised to figure this piece of information out, just like Marek. I wonder how many other people realized this during the 1940's?
3. Predict-47/2 Even though Marek does not enjoy Anthony's company right now, I am predicting that they will grow to like each other as the plot thickens. When people spend a lot of time together like they are, they have to get a long better. Marek will eventually call Antony "dad".
4. Judge/Evaluate-68/1 I think that Marek's grandmother is feeling depressed because her husband is losing her memory. She works in the market selling cigarettes in order to get away from the truth about her husband's fading memory.
5. Visualize-31/4 When the author was describing Marek's mother figuring out how he had "shaken" the money from the Jew. I could clearly see her crying for Marek on the floor. It was a very dramatic scene that sticks out in my mind. If I were Marek, and I had made my mom that disappointed in me, I would not know what to do.
6. Infer- (whole first third of book) I have inferred that people in Poland either have a very strong opinion about Jews, but do not care about them living in their houses if they can make money off of them.
In response to Justin, I agree with you about Marek being very religious and honest, but I do not think that he is self conscious because he carries his drunk stepfather home in the middle of the night in a "three wheeler". I would not be brave enough to do this every night.
1) Question- I was wondering why the Jew seemed in a hurry, almost as if he was hiding something in the briefcase. (27/3)
2) Connect- Right in the beginning of the book, the author is describing how they smuggled food. This made me make a connection to what we just learned about in English, while doing the Anne Frank play. In act two scene three, Mr. Van Daan is caught stealing food and eating it. It kind of made a connection to The Man on the Other Side because Mr. Van Daan was smuggling himself some food, as well as they were in the book. (12/2)
3) Predict- I think that someone is eventually going to find out what they are doing, smuggling food through the sewers (11/3), and catch them in the act. Or another thing I predict could happen is that they would start taking food illegally over and over again, constantly, and more often, and soon enough someone could realize what they were doing.
4) Infer- Well I think the “Jew” that seemed in a hurry carrying the briefcase will have an important role throughout the story. (27/3) I think maybe he could be interested in what they are doing with the food, and he may want to be apart of the smuggling or something.
5) Determine Importance- “Sometimes I would pretend I was a Jew, just to see what it felt like. Still, whenever we passed a vantage point from which I could glimpse the Polish side of the ghetto wall, I made sure to look.” (12/1) I think this passage is important because it shows he cares and is wondering what it’s like actually being a Jew and that he shows great interest.
6) Build- At first when I started the story, I thought Antony would be caring and hopeful, and nice. But as I started reading and getting more into it, I found he was more of a pessimist. Antony didn’t think his own mother had a chance of surviving. He didn’t even have much hope, which really changed my opinion on him. (20/5)
Nicole Rabovsky Hour 3 1.Question:(35/2) I am very confused as to why the author takes the time to mention that there was another man who had something strange to him in the church while Marek is praying. Is there any significance to this man? Why does it also mention that the man had crossed himself backwards? What does this mean?
2. Connection :(12/2) When Marek describes how he feels when he sees homeless Jews laying starving in the Ghetto it reminded me of how I feel when I see a homeless person on the street. It is a very sickening feeling and Marek experiences it too when he looks at the starving children.
3.Judge/Evaluate: (pg.27) I think that the event in which Marek helps Janek and Wacek steal money from a runaway Jew is a good example of peer pressure. Marek would have never done something like that if it hadn't been for the judgement received from Janek and Wacek.
4. Prediction: I predict that by the end of the book Marek and Antony will have a close relationship. This is because Marek already seems to appreciate Atony more since he knows that Marek is truly part Jew and hasn't judged him, as well as the fact that they are going to be spending a lot of time in the sewers together where it is possible for them to bond.
5.Visualize: (7/3) As reading, "...we reached a point where we had to stoop and wade through the sewage, which first came up to our ankles and then to our knees," I got a very clear image in my mind of two man stooping and trudging through this disgusting sewage material.
6. Determine Importance: (21/3)I think that this paragraph is worth reviewing because it shows that Antony really does care about the lives of people and cares enough to smuggle out a Jewish baby.
In response to Kari: For your question in your first comment, I don't think I would have told the Gestapo because technically I, too, would have been committing the crime of smuggling food and would be scared of the consequence. I also really like your inference regarding the opinions of people in Poland.
1) Question- I wonder why Krol was in the sewers? 2) Infer- I think Krol was down in the sewers because he was hoping to catch a smuggler in the act. I’m not sure that Krol would have turned them in because the Gestapo would be wondering if he was smuggling goods into the ghetto. 3) Predict- I think Marek and his dad are going to get caught because I think the story will have the same situation like the one with Krol. 4) Determine Importance- I think the part with Krol was really surprising and well-written this helped make that part very exciting. 5) Build- I learned a lot about Marek’s step-dad changing when they are in the sewer like he stumbles and when he killed Krol. 6) Summarize- The chapter about Marek’s real dad had said he gotten killed in a prison when he was just four. Then Marek was sad that his dad didn’t get buried. Marek dad thought communism was the answer to his problems.
In response to Nicole your prediction helped me come up with my prediction and you had a great question.
In response to Ryan's question of "I wonder why Krol was in the sewers?", I agree with your answer but i also believe that he may have heard some kind of rumor about Antony smuggling goods and wanted some of his profit. I also believe that he would've been willing to to tell the Gestapo because of the way he acted about it.
1)Question – Why were the other “big time smugglers” able to do things easier and had connections with the Germans themselves(12/2)?
2)Connect – I’ve read other books where in suck a horrible place like the ghetto, there were very nice things like the delicacies shops. It seem rather out of place to me when I try to think about it because you’d think that they wouldn’t move their things in until the Jews were shipped out(13/3).
3)Predict – Because of how Antony had mellowed down to the Jews I believe they, being his family, will become less anti-simatic(13/3).
4)Judge/Evaluate – Due to how Antony treats the Jews here I don’t really think he hates them as much as he says he does rather than just saying he dislikes them because that is his nature(15/3).
5)Build – Judging how Antony started out by hating the Jews then letting them kind of grow onto him, I think in later chapters of the book he will eventually become friends or at least friendly with the Jewish people(15/3).
6)Visualize – When I visualized the part in the book where they first emerge from the three Jewish brothers basement, I see three Jewish men smiling offering a hand with the bags of goods but keeping wary as they are not yet completely friends with each other(15/3).
1) Question: Why does Antony need his sons help? He has been doing it alone all the time. (5/2-3)
2) Predict: I predict that Marek will end up helping the Jews. (pg 55-)
3) Evaluate: I believe Marek shouldn’t steal from Jews considering he is half Jewish and its wrong. (27/2)
4) Visualize: When there stealing from the Jew I picture Marek, Janek, and Wacek talking on the street about stealing from the Jew and how there going to do it. (27/2)
5) Determine Importance: When Marek said he would steal from a Jew I was surprised and confused because he is half Jewish and I thought he was like that. (27/1)
6) Summarize: Chapter one. Marek joins his father in smuggling food for the Jews. They both go down into the sewer together and sell stuff to Jews. They have to crawl through the sewer water and in gross spots. (chapter 1)
I agree with John. I was wondering also why the others can smuggle food so easily, and why didn’t Antony have any connections with Germans?
1)Question:I don't understand why Krol was in the sewers to catch a smuggler when he could have just gone in the getto to see if the Jews had any extra food the Nazis didn't give them? 2)Visualize: I can imagine Anothony getting drunk because when i see people drunk they don't remember anything and they don't act like themselves so I can just imagine Anothony ceing the opposite of himself. 3) Infer: I belive just because Anothony is going through tought times in his life he doesn't have to get drunk every week. 4) Predict: I predict something big in Anothony's life will get him to stop getting drunk because of his problems in life. 5)Connect: I can connect Anothony's problem of doing stupid stuff when he gets mad to my family when they get mad because they do stuff that later they are not proud of like Anothony drinking. 6)Summarize: Marek and his father go into the sewer to sell iteams illeaglly like the black market.
ReplyDelete2) Infer- I think Krol was down in the sewers because he was hoping to catch a smuggler in the act.

ReplyDelete1)Question – Why were the other “big time smugglers” able to do things easier and had connections with the Germans themselves(12/2)?

Delete1) Question: Why does Antony need his sons help?
ReplyDelete2)Visualize: I can imagine Anothony getting drunk because when i see people drunk they don't remember anything and they don't act like themselves so I can just imagine Anothony ceing the opposite of himself.
