1)Question-Why does every one smoke the priest smokes marek smokes i’m sure that the nurses in hospital even smoke there is no law since its so corrupted by Hitler maybe?(88,2)
2)Connect-So Pan has agreed to be helped into hiding. But in the movies and books these people think of this plan/idea but i never goes according to plan.(86,1)
3)Infer-I think that they whip them harder the older because the older you are the tougher and stronger you are.(71,1)
4)Visualize-Grandpa freezes with the food halfway to his mouth and Marek has to feed himself(81,4)
    5) Predict-I think the gestapo will catch them try to hide pan Jozeks or get turned in by someone who hates Jews like Antony.(85,3)
6)-Determine Importance- Mare and pan seem to trust each other and talk about almost anything giving names and personal information to each other this could be be really bad or really good.(79,3)

    1) Question (72/1) Is Pan Josek the "man from the other side"? I have a feeling that he will turn out to be a significant character and have a lot to do with the plot.

    2) Connection (70/2) My mom can tell what I am feeling, just like Marek's. Mareks mother can tell when he is lying, and my mother can tell what emotion I am feeling. She is a very understanding person.

    3) Inference (94/2) I am inferring that Grandma is not a very empathetic person who was made stronger because of her husband's memory loss. She hates Jews for no apparent reason and also is not very caring to Grandpa. I think she is very strict, but many people respect her.

    4) Visualize (73/4) I can see Pan Josek and Marek meeting on the street in the park and enjoying the sunlight just before Pan Josek has to go into hiding. I think that they would have looked like brothers discussing the war and Jewish people. I think that Pan Josek would have been interesting to talk to.

    5) Predict (115/4) I predict that Antony will turn Pan Josek in because he hates Jews and is also jealous of him. I also predict that he will get really angry at Marek's mother for walking with him and holding his arm. She will be ashamed of helping Marek hid him.

    6) Determine Importance (110/2) I think that Grandma and Pan Josek's debate was very important because it showed both sides of the quarrel. It is very important because Pan Josek tries to tell Grandma that Jewish people aren't Poland's problem and that they actually helped Poland. I think that Grandma stopped hating Jews as much after this argument.

My comment for Andrew - I thought that your question was good, but your determine importance was kind of confusing, but I still got the gist of it. Also I think that Pan means Mr., It is not his first name.

    1. Question: I was a bit confused on why Marek said, “I had never thought that a Jew could be so like a pole.” I used this strategy because I got confused on that part and didn’t really understand what the meaning of that was. (65/6)

    2. Predict: I think Marek is going to be staying with his grandparents for maybe a long time because I bet Antony won’t be apologizing to Marek until a while. I used this strategy because I felt like this is what’s going to be happening in the next few chapters. (118/6)

    3. Judge/Evaluate: I don’t think it was right for Antony to hit Marek because Marek isn’t Antony’s kid, and you shouldn’t be hitting or hurting people because you are mad. I used this strategy because I had an opinion on something. (117/9)

    4. Build: I feel that now that I know what Antony did to Marek, now I know that Antony is mean. At first I thought he was pretty nice because he helped some people. I used this strategy because I learned more about someone. (117/9)

5: Visualize: I could really picture how it was outside because how the author explained it. The author said in the book, “…with a suddenly blue sky and snow glittering all around. There wasn’t a breath of wind. The air was so fresh and pure that you felt you had never been so alive.” I used this strategy because it was really descriptive in the book. (74/7)

    6. Summarize: Marek goes to the church and keeps on seeing the man that he and the two boys stole from. He follows him one day and learns that the man needs somewhere to stay. Marek finds a place for him to stay and has to keep it from Antony because the man is a Jew. Later on Antony finds out and gets angry at Marek and hits him. Marek then says he’s going to leave to stay with his grandparents.

Kari Jirik: I totally agree with your number 4 post. I could really see Marek and Pan getting along very well. In the book Marek says, "We could have passed for an elder and a younger brother, or for neighbors." It also seems they've already gotten along very well.

    1. Question- Why would Pan Jozek trust Marek to help him? Wouldn’t Pan Jozek think that Marek is trying to turn him in?
    2. Predict- I think that in the next section the Nazi’s are going to figure out about Pan Jozek and Marek’s Family because Marek has been wandering around with Pan Jozek in the city too much.
    3. Infer- it said on page 94/1 that “you could say three whole paternosters between the time he had a thought and the time he put it into words”- Marek. I think a paternoster might be like a tongue twister.
    4. Visualize- It was very interesting how the author said that they put sugar cubes under their tongues when they drank tea. I think the author did a very nice job of creating a good mental image in our heads from all the details the author put.
    5. Determine Importance- are Mareks Grandparents living separate or together because I’m confused if they are or aren’t
    6. Summarizing- Marek found a Jew in church and decided to help him because he felt bad about taking a different Jewish mans money. So he took Pan Jozek to his grandma’s house and he hind there. Marek also brought him to his Grandpas apartment so that they could help grandpa because he was sick. And then towards the end of the section Anthony found out about what Marek was doing and got very mad and Marek ran out of the house slamming the door behind him.

Maysee- I think he said that Jews are like Poles because he found out that there is nothing different about Jews and Poles.

1—Question—(Page 87/Paragraph 1) Is a street car like a city bus that runs throughout the ghetto?
2—Connect—(Page 56/Paragraph 1) They left the church open to whomever wants to come in and pray but today most churches are closed and locked after the daily mass(es).
3—Judge/Evaluate—(Page 66/Paragraph 1) He’s uncle must have been extremely careful because he laid down strict rules for the Jews in hiding and he even marked the squeaky floorboards.
4—Visualize—(Page 58/Paragraph 4) I can visualize the snow falling while he’s out walking on the street because I’ve walked during a snowfall before
5—Determine Importance—(Page 116/Paragraph 2) A kind of funny part in the story is when he takes a few tries to successfully light a cigarette without putting the match out or burning the cigarette.
6—Sumerize—(Chapter 6) This chapter is mainly about Marek trying to get his grandfather to allow Pan Josek to stay with him while he finds a better place to hide. Marek describes some of his family members to Pan while discussing how his family feels about Jews at the table

In response to Seth Laurent, I think Pan Jozek trusts Marek because Pan doesn't really have a lot of options sense he got kicked out of the pantry and his other two "safe houses" he considers to be used only for emergencies.

1-Question: (87/1) Along with Justin’s question, I was wondering what a street car was. Is a street car a certain type of vehicle used for some occasion?

2-Connection: (71/2) This paragraph describes how her grandma knew she was up to something and could tell what she was feeling. I can connect to this because my mom always knows when I’m kidding, or lying, or how I’m feeling, because I’ll act different or strange.

3-Visualize: (65/3) This paragraph describes the church, and the graveyard near it. I can really picture how the church and graveyard are layed out in my head and how it really gives off the feeling of being somewhere religious. It also makes me picture a church by my aunt’s house that has a graveyard near it too.

4-Predict: (85/5) I think Antony might consider turning in Pan Josek by telling the Gestapo because Pan is helping Jews, and Antony hates Jews.

5-Build: (85/1-5) When I first started reading this book, I thought Antony would eventually go along with helping the Jews, but now as I’m reading, my thoughts about him are changing and I think he’s going to turn them in instead of helping Pan Josek help Jews.

In response to Justin Mulder, I had the same thoughts about the churches being open after masses in the story, compared to today where they usually lock everything up after everyone has left after the masses. I wonder if people today know that it used to not be locked up so people had the chance to pray, and if they want to change that or make something else possible, so anyone could come and pray.

1.Question:It says that Marek's grandparents are rather poor, then how come they have the money to give Pan Jozek a place to stay?
2.Build:After reading section 1 I thought that Marek and Antony's relationship would become better throughout the book, but now after seeing the way Antony reacted to finding out that Marek was helping a Jew I think their relationship will get worse.
3.Connect:I can kind of connect to the way Pan Jozek trusts in Marek to help him after hearing Marek's story. Sometimes in life you just put faith in someone because you have a feeling that you can.
4.Judge/Evaluate:As I was reading I took note of the chapter titles. I thought that they were very straight foward for example chapter 7 was simply called "Grandfather's Teeth and Pan Korek" and the chapter was about Grandfather not giving his teeth to Marek and how Pan Korek helped hide an Jozek. In some books the names of chapters are a lot more symbolic unlike these.
5.Determine Importance: On page 103 paragraph 4, as it explains how Pan Jozek helped Grandfather and really brightened up Marek's grandparents' lives, you can see how Marek's opinions of Jews is really shifting. This is a very important aspect.
5.Visualize:On page 115 when Antony sees Marek's mother with Pan Jozek I can see his face turn white with anger, the confusion in Pan Jozek's eyes, and Marek's horror.
In response to Kate:I was confused about what a street car was, too, so I looked up the defintion and found this:"Streetcars are rail transit vehicles designed for local transportation, powered by electricity received from an overhead wire." I kind of imagine them as buses on train tracks in the street.

Anwser: They have the money to give Pan Josek a place to stay because they have enough food and that is the only expense that he would have staying there. Also he has money to pay for the food that he eats while he is there so it would be no expense to Marek's grandparents.
1)Infer- I think that Pan Korek helps hide Jews because he is a very sympathetic man and has a good heart. He doesn't care about the money because he donates it all.(84)
2)Question- I am wondering why the Priest was so reluctant to help Pan Jozek because he is a preist and he is supposed to respect everybody no matter their religion and help out no matter what, but Pan Jozek said that the Priest was very reluctant to give him food and share with him.(60)
3)Connection- I think that we have a certain mindset now days in how things are supposed to be and what they should and shouldn't be like that if something is different in the past that we thing it is weird and we wonder about it.
4)Determine Importance- I think that Marek's mother telling him that she is not prejudice to any faith, race, or skin reminds Marek what being a good person not just a good christian is. It is believing that all people are equal. This probably kept Marek on the right path and not taking money from Jews.(56)
5)Judge/Evaluate- I am very impressed with how Marek put Pan Josek's well being before his own. Helping a Jew would get him killed but yet Marek when he finds out Pan Josek is a Jew immediately tries to help him and find him a new place to hide where it could mean death for both of them.(65)
6)Summary- Marek finds Pan Josek who is a Jew and needs a new place to hide from the Natzies and tries to help him by giving him money and finding him a place to hide at the tavern he works at, but after the owner is afraid he might get caught Marek has to find a new place for Pan Josek to hide so he turns to his grandmother. She says yes even though she is highly prejudice against Jews. For 10 days they get along very well and almost become friends, but the day came where Pan Josek had to move on and go move into a new hopefully more permanent hiding spot at Marek's Uncle's house.

    1) Question: Is Pan Josek going to be the man from the other side or just some little character to throw the reader off to get them to keep guessing on who the man from the other side?
    2) Predict: I predict that some stranger will take Pan Josek in to their house to hide them from the Nazis.
    3) Connection: When the people follow the preist when he smokes is like when kids get someone to do something stupid because of peer pressure.
    4) Judge/Evaluate: I think people smoking is stupid just to be like a preist and even though the people know the preist is doing things wrong they still follow him.
    5) Infer: I think Pan Korek will help Jews because he doesn't care about himself as much as he cares about other people.
    6) Summary: Marek is looking for a place to put a Jew by the name of Pan Josek to hide him from the Nazis.

Jared- I think the book was given the its title because Marek was technically the man from the other side. He came through the sewers to help Jews. In a more metaphorical sense, he went from the side of a person who disliked Jews to a person that developed a soft spot for them.

    1. Question- Does Marek’s grandfather have Alzheimer’s? Or did he have something like dementia?

    2. Predict- I think something is going to happen involving Pan Jozek. I think he might get in trouble or almost get caught.

    3. Judge/Evaluate- I don’t get why they make Antony look like a person that hates Jews, yet helps them and gives them weapons, food, water, and clothing.

    4. Build- I think Marek’s grandmother is a bit of a confusing character. At first, she seemed kind of moody, but now she just confuses me. They say she doesn’t like Jews, but when Pan Jozek leaves she doesn’t clean everything down.

    5. Visualize- When Marek explains to Pan Jozek how to scare his Grandfather to get his teeth, I can visualize all the pranks he describes. I can especially visualize the part where they explained to Pan Jozek about his grandmother’s prank and sometimes he gets lucid in the middle of it. Seeing that in my head makes me laugh. :)

    6. Determine Importance- Why does Antony call Marek, “Almost a man,” but then goes and hits him? I don’t see the importance of Antony saying that.

1: Question- Is Antony smuggling food to help the Jews or just to make a profit?

2: Predict- I predict that there plan for Pan Jozek wont work. (86/3)

3: Evaluate- I think Marek should just go ahead and tell his mom about Pan Jozek. She is really nice and thinks that everyone is equal. So she will help. (85/4)

4: Visualize- I visualize all of them sitting around a table eating food. (83/7)

5: Determine Importance- Its surprising that Pan Jozek doesn’t want mareks help anymore. (84/4)

6: Summarize- Chapter 6. Marek and Pan Jozek meet up. They go to Mareks grandmothers house. They eat and talk about what they will do for Pan Jozek

I agree with Emma because he isn’t a Jew and he lives good. So he technically is on the other side and he helps the Jews.

In response to your question Cody, I think that he is doing that he says hes doing it purely to make a profit but I also believe that he wants to help the Jews as he allows them to "grow" on him instead of just taking their many without like joking around with them like he does.

1)Question: My question about this section would be this, why would people just assume that Jewish people were supposedly “gentle” as Marek’s mother had suggested (57/3)?

2)Connect: When something changed in Marek’s life it reminded me of how when I would lose something that I was used to using each and every day it would change my whole day to day style as it had to Marek when he started going to church every Monday as he didn’t normally do that before (56/1).

3)Judge/Evaluate: Judging by how Marek wanted his dad to look and/or be like the Jewish man from the church did I think he only says he doesn’t like the Jews when in his heart he really knows that he does (57/4).

4)Infer: From what I read in the last section I thought Antony was trying to hide that he really does like the Jews I think he’s still trying to do so by him most likely not letting Marek give the money away if he had found out when even he had let the Jews grow on him (58/1).

5)Visualize: When I try to visualize the Jewish man at the church I see a nervous fidgety young man of about 27 years holding a briefcase tightly as he scuttled away which kind of reminded me of Dr. Dussel when he was first accepted into the secret annex (58/2-3).

6)Determine Importance: When the Jew explains what his life is like I believe it is important because is gives Marek a better understanding of the lifestyle of the Jews that aren’t in the ghettos(62/1-7)
