Andrew Fromfeld Hour 4 1) Question—how can Marek hear the machine gun fire and expositions that far away unless they were really close to his grandmother’s house because see cant here good. (120, 3) 2) Connect—from the war games I played Molotov cock tails were wine bottles with a rag stuffed at the top. Just like in the book they lit the rag and throw the bottle. This weapon was used in resistance and uprisings because it’s easy and primitive to make.(125,4) 3) predict—I predict that Jozek will die because things are getting too dangerous with him joining the resistance many will die.(133,3) 4) Jude/evaluate—In this chapter the Germans are starting the final solution the extermination of the Jews. The Germans are shooting arterary and machine gun fire into the Jewish houses.(122,2) 5) Visualize—A explosion happens overhead and Jozek and Marek are fling into the sewage covered in filth.(142,2) 6) Summarize—Marek and Jozek travel through the sewers to the ghetto. Jews die overhead and the tunnel clapses from an explosion by the Germans.
Seth Laurent 4th hour 1. I wonder where Marek’s parents are and what they are doing during this time(170) 2. Predict- I think that the Germans will eventually close in on the Jews and kill them(168/1) 3. Judge/evaluate- it said that Pan Michael Klapfisz had been killed in combat and I think that that kid went to the same school as Marek’s(165/1) 4. Infer- it said the Germans asked to parley. I think parley means to make a treaty or agreement(164/1) 5. Visualize-it was scary reading how Pan Jozek rolled off the roof with the German(166/2) 6. Determine Importance- I like how Marek wants to burry Pan Jozek because it show s how much he cares about him.
Seth- the book says Antony was there with him, but his mom was probably at home worrying or doing things around the house and thought he went with friends or to his grandmother’s house.
1. Question- What did you think about the ending? Do you think the author should have ended the book differently? I think it shouldn’t have ended so abruptly and had a few things to say about his life later on so we know what he went on to do after the war.
2. Connect- Marek’s mom puts her arm around Pan Jozek’s. I do that with my friends and family sometimes when we’re being weird. :)
3. Judge/Evaluate- At first, I thought the book was really boring and uninteresting, but now that I finished it, I changed my mind and thought it was a pretty good book.
4. Visualize- The author didn’t describe some events during the uprising very well, but based on what he wrote and my mind came up with, I still got a pretty good mental image in my head. I could see buildings burning and people running all over.
5. Build- I thought Marek seemed kind of like a rascal by the way he was skipping school all the time and said he got sent home for being in trouble, but I don’t anymore. Now, I get that he was doing it for Pan Jozek and wanted help. It also seemed like he had a lot of free-time on his hands.
6. Infer- I infer that the Germans started burning buildings so Jews couldn’t try to escape via another exit or passage they made.
Maysee Lao Hour 7 1. Question: Why does there seem to be so many men named Pan? I used this strategy because I was really confused while reading this book because there were so many men called Pan, and I had to always look back on the names. (135/2)
2. Connect: In the book, the Jews are killing Germans and trying to get away and in history class when talking about slaves, slaves tried getting away from their masters. I used this strategy because I connected it with history. (123/3)
3. Predict: I think the Jews are going to find a way to get free. I used this strategy because I was making hypotheses and it seemed like hints. (123/5)
4. Judge/Evaluate: The woman was really brave to stick up for the Jews by saying in the book, “Those houses belong to the Jews.” I used this strategy because I didn’t think someone other than a Jew would stick up for Jews. I used it to judge and evaluate how the person in the book acted. (122/7)
5. Build: Marek was really starting to have feelings for the Jews. I used this strategy because I didn’t think Marek would ever really care for the Jews. My ideas/thoughts changed and built, as in, I never knew he’d have feelings for them. (122/4)
6. Visualize: I could imagine how the scene looked like. In the book it said, “Above me the sky was full of smoke, but down below at street level all was quiet.” I used this strategy because it was detailed and I could imagine it in my head. (170/2)
Emma Whitman: I agree with your comment about the ending of the book. I think the author should have added about what happened after the war and all. It just ended with Antony going to be adopting Marek.
1-Question: How did you like the ending? I thought it was kind of strange how it ended so suddenly without some explanations of details I was wondering about. Agreeing with Emma’s comment, I was thinking that the author could have finished the story by telling him what went on after the war with his life, to let the reader know how it resulted in his perspective, instead of just ending it.
2-Connection: This whole book is about the unfairness of the Jews being taken by the Germans (122-124), which made me think of two movies I watched recently, Sarah’s Key and The Boy in Striped Pajamas, which were both movies about Jews and concentration camps. It made a connection while I was reading because it made me think back to the movies about how I saw Jews treated like, and it made me picture that while I was reading.
3-Visualize: When the explosion happened, (142-143), it made a picture in my mind and played a movie in my mind while I was reading it.
4-Judge/Evaluate: Now that I’m finished with the book, I can fully evaluate it. Throughout most of the book, I thought it dragged on too much and was boring. It wasn’t until the end when things started to get interesting and made me want to keep reading it. Overall, I think people should read this book, as long as they can stick with it.
5-Infer: Since the author ended the book without continuing what happened after the war with his story, I think he was trying to get us to infer what happens. I think with all the things that happened, that the author continued to help people and tell his story to many people. Maybe by not ending the story without telling us what’s going on now, he wanted us to infer and keep suspense to what happened. (Ending)
6-Build: At first I thought Pan Jozek would just complicate things for them and not be much of a help, but towards the end of the story Pan changed and grew on me and my thoughts changed and built about him. I noticed Pan really helped them and wasn’t just taking what they gave them without giving them any help or anything in return.
Maysee: I was wondering the same thing as your first comment, while I was reading I did get confused at all the men called Pan, so sometimes I had to re-read.
Maysee- I think that Pan means "Mr." I can see how you are confused.
Question-146/2 Would I be brave enough to sneak into the Ghetto with Pan Josek? I hope that I would have been brave enough if I were in Marek's place.
Connect-160/3 Last year in seventh grade, a man came to our school to talk about a Jewish uprising that his grandfather helped plan. I think that this is the same uprising that occured in history. THe man's grandfather must have been one of the "three brothers" that Marek was talking about.
Judge/Evaluate-170/4 Marek, Antony and all of the Jews from the ghetto were so brave for wading through the neck high sewer water in order to survive the German attacks. People can do so many amazing feats when they are afraid.
Build-172/3 Marek has really grown as a person throughout the plot. He began as a boy who stole money from Jews for fun and ended as a hero for helping the jews with the uprising.
Predict-186/5 I predict that Marek will be in shock for a long time after the uprising because of all the things that he has seen.
Visualize-169/4 I could visualize Pan Josek dying very clearly. I could clearly visualize him running to the man who shot him. It was a very horrible moment.
Nicole Rabovsy Pd.3 1.(Question)-Did any of the Jews survive the uprising? If so how, were they taken to concentrration camps? Did they survive those? 2.(Determine Importance)-I think that it was a very significant part when Marek felt bad about all the dying Jews because in the begginning of the book he wouldn't have cared. This really shows how his character changed. 3.(Judge/Evaluate)-In my opinion it was very brave of Pan Jozek to want to return and fight with the Jews after finding a good, safe hiding place. If it were me I do not think I would have the courage to do something like that. 4.(Connect)-When it said on page 184 that Jews were jumping out of the burning buildings it reminded me of 9/11 and how people jumped out of the Twin Towers to end their misery, too. 5.(Build)-When I first began reading this book I thought that Marek and his step fathers relationship would turn to one of love and care, and by the end of the book it did as Antony adopted Marek (page 186). 6.(Visualize)- I got a very good mental image on page 167 of Marek watching Pan Jozek die. I could feel his greif and see his pain.
In response to Kate's question: I agree the story did end rather quickly.I think that the author may have done this because it was a true story told by his real-life friend, Marek, but since Marek died shortly before Orlev wrote the book he couldn't find out all the following details.
Alex Prohaska 3rd hour 1Infer-I think that none of the Jews survived the uprising because the Nazis would just kill them all while they are there and not bother taking them to concentration camps probably.
2Question-I was wondering why Antony always wanted to adopt Marek so badly and when he finally accepted why Antony got so emotional about it.
3Connection-I remember reading other books or watching movies where kids where adopted and they were always dedicated to their true parents and I think that's what Marek wanted to do. He wanted to reamin dedicated to his dad.
4Importance- I think that the way the book tells how the Jews were all killed in the Ghetto and the cruelty of the Nazis just shows how bad the war really was and what the Germans did to the Jews.
5Judge-I am impressed in the book with how Marek was so brave and didn't want to leave the Ghetto until Pan Josek was properly buried.
6Summary-Marek decides to help Pan Joesk get into the Ghetto to fight with the other Jews against the Germans but he gets caught up in the fighting a little and Pan Joesk gets killed and he finds his step-father Antony in the Ghetto and tells him he isn't leaving until they give Pan Josek a proper buriel so when they do and leave the book ends with Marek finally allowing Antony to adopt him.
In response to your question Alex i think he wanted to adopt him badly because he was starting to get to know him better and treated as if he were his own son and Marek had started to treat him as if he were a father figure to him.
1)Question: How terrible the killings in the ghetto were such as the one that Marek’s grandmother had asked him about (121/2)?
2)Connect: I’ve wondered what would happen if someone were to do something different or something different were to happen as Marek had wondered about his father if he were still alive (121/2).
3)Predict: When Marek was wondering why the Jews would be evacuated from the ghettos ambulances when they were getting killed by soldiers I wondered if it was actually the wounded soldiers being evacuated from the ghettos instead of the Jews themselves (121/2)
4)Judge/Evaluate: Judging by how he was going to trick his grandmother early in the chapter I think that he was going to try to fool many more people throughout his life and maybe not succeed so easily as he did that time (121/5).
5)Infer: Judging by how he started warming up to the Jews earlier in the book and how he says he would’ve been happy that the Jews were dying before he’d started helping them I think he will like them genuinely (122/2-3).
6)Visualize: I can imagine an old lady having to ask a young boy where the noise is coming from as Marek’s grandmother had to him a bit easily because I’m used to helping the elderly do things (120/2).
Jared Porter hour 5 1) Question: I get that if you lose a game you have to pay a price but stealing candy from i grocery stroe I just don't get it. 2)Build: I'm going to say just by the way the one lady reacts to the germans finishing off teh jews she is not a jew but, she supports the Allied forces against Hitler and the Nazis. 3)Visualize: I can see all the people above the getto saying their thoughts adn teh one women speaking up and everybody thinkng her as a jew. 4)Predict: I predit that Pan Joesk will stay in the sewer if the germans try to finish them the getto off and then he will fight along with the other jews with wepons like guns. 5)Judge/Evaluate: I thought at the begginging of teh book that Anotony was a jerk who only cared about himself and money but at the end he showed he cared about Marek. 6)Connect: I can connect the speaking about the germans finishing off the getto as a case at court because everybody has a different side of the story to tell that can be just as important as everybody elses.
1: Question- Why would Pan Jozek want to leave his hiding place when hes already safe? (127/1)

4: Visualize- I can see the Jews fighting back at the Germans to save there lives. (123/4)

6: Chapter 10- Marek heard all the machine guns coming from the Ghetto. The Jews start to fight back. Pan Jozek wants to go back to the ghetto to help.
Jared porter. I also thought the same thing. Like why would you have to go steal candy as your punishment?
