It reminds me of when sometimes when I go on traveling for Sport Activities, Everyone would sing to popular songs on the radio. 4)Determine Importance- I think everyone should be careful for Samuele (Enzo). Since he's a Jewish person, The soldiers may know. Cassie Ebner- 3rd Hour English 1) Question- Why is an American western being shown if all American things in Italy are supposed to be gone? (4/5) 2) Predict- I predict that Enzo will be discovered. I think the boy who steals Enzo’s food will turn him in. Since Enzo and Roberto are also giving some of their food to the Jewish girl and her sister, they will have so little food that they won’t give anymore to the “thief”. That will lead the boy to turn Enzo in. (N/A) 3) Judge/Evaluate- I think Roberto is a bit naïve. He doesn’t want to believe some of the horrible things Enzo is telling him about work and death camps. It indicates to the reader he is very naïve about the war and what exactly is going on around him. (59/All) 4) Visualize- There was a strong visualization that came along with the part when the Jews are herded into the holding pen. I personally could see the German soldiers viscously rounding up these Jews and pushing them into a small, barbed wire enclosure. Another strong visualization was when the German solder shook the barbed wire so it would cut the little girl’s lip. (62/1) 5) Determine Importance- I believe after Enzo and Roberto get out of the water is an extremely important section. When Enzo says, “What could be a better place for it then water?” (51/2), it shows that briefly Enzo was okay with dying. (51/2) 6) Infer- The section I mentioned in the previous section (determining importance) also requires a bit of inferencing. The author doesn’t come right out and say it but it can be inferenced that when Enzo mentions “it” he means death and dying. He is saying that if he has to die the best place would be in the water. (51/2)
In response to Noah Plautz's question: I don't think they need to relate to it. That is like saying you can't like a movie about a superhero. Nobody can exactly relate to that but that doesn't mean that you can't have an imagination. They want to be able to imagine what America was like and the western assisted in that.
1)Question- If the boys were concerned about seeing a Western because it was an American film, then why did they go see it in the first place? (4/5) 2)I predict that Enzo will get discovered by the Germans. And when he gets discovered I think his friends will also get into trouble or killed because they kept him hidden and were friends with him. (N/A) 3)Connect- I can connect with the boys when they are learning the German words for things, such as Brot(bread) and Wasser(water). They are expected to learn these words through repetition. When I learn words in German class, including those words, that's how we learn them also.(30/3) 4)Determine Importance- I think it was very important in the beginning when Roberto was separated from his older brother Sergio. That was a big deal to Roberto because he really looked up to his brother and needed him during this time. Especially when Sergio says "Keep your mouths shut and so what everyone else does"(15/4). (16/3) 5)Visualize- I got a good image in my head of the part when the boys first got off of the train in Germany. It talked about the young children shouting and spitting on them. I could visualize the kids taunting them, and also how humiliated the boys must have been. (33/3) 6)Summarize- In the chapter called The Train all of the boys in the movie theater got put on a train by the German soldiers. It set the mood for the rest of the story. We as readers were given the general direction that the book would go from there. (16-27)
In response to Cassie, I also had the same question about the American Western film as you did. When I thought about it for a while I thought that maybe not everyone in Italy disliked the Americans. There are always to view points on everything, so it's possible that the theater owner didn't dislike the Americans, and his showing of that film was his way of almost showing his support of the Americans
Emily Bauman- 1st hour English. 1. Question: I wonder if Memo and Sergio will ever reunite with Roberto and Enzo? (31/4) 2. Connect: Lots of times I may pay for things for my friends, like popcorn or candy at the movies, and they will say they will pay me back, although most of the time they never do. This happens to Memo also. (4/5) 3. Infer: When Sergio says “Fact number two: don’t play with fire,” it makes me think that something bad is going to happen in result to Samuele being a Jewish boy. It was a warning for what was coming next. (10/1) 4. Visualize: When it describes how Enzo looks once he got in the truck after being beaten, I can definitely visualize him with a blank cold stare/gaze while sitting in the truck with blood running down his face and a spot of vomit on his face while Roberto is looking at him in awe. (38/6) 5. Determine Importance: I thought that when Enzo put his life on the line for Roberto so they could stay together it was very important because it shows how great of friends they must be. Lots of people wouldn’t do that. (33/5) 6. Summarize: Four boys who are best friends have been captured by the German Nazis and forced to work at camps. They are then forced to split up except Roberto and Samuele who end up together, although Samuele has to change his name to Enzo because he is Jewish. They are trying to stay alive, but with long work hours, not enough food or water, and now that someone knows Enzo’s secret and is taking his food as black mail it will be hard.
In Response to when Halle said ‘I think it was very important in the beginning when Roberto was separated from his older brother Sergio. That was a big deal to Roberto because he really looked up to his brother and needed him during this time. Especially when Sergio says "Keep your mouths shut and so what everyone else does,"’ I also thought that was a very key part to the story line. It is important to get across the fact that Sergio was such an important person in Roberto’s life that when they were separated the words and advice he said will hopefully stick with him throughout the rest of the book.

I went on dictionary.com and the definition is a governmental system led by a dictator having complete power, forcibly suppressing opposition and criticism, regimenting all industry, commerce, etc., and emphasizing an aggressive nationalism and often racism.(9/3) 2)Connect- They talked a little bit about the bombing of Pearl Harbor and WWII and it reminded me of history day because the bombing of Pearl Harbor was my topic. (4/4) 3)Predict- I predict that the boys will in fact get stopped by the Nazi police and get questioned on where there going, etc. (11/2) 4)Judge/Evaluate- Memo seems like he is a ladies man because he is always talking about girls. he was talking about Teresa and how he has a "thing" for her and he also talked about a gondola ride with a girl. (5/1) 5)Build- Samuel is a Jew but he is probably the nicest person out of the whole group of boys. He offered to switch spots with Robert so he could see the movie better. (13/4) 6)Infer- I know that Jews weren't allowed with the German people so from what I know, Samuel and Roberto must have been friends before all of the commotion began. (6/1) 7)Visualize- I could visualize Sergio wanting Samuel's Star of David and Samuel giving it to him. (12/1) 8)Determine Importance- I would be scared out of my mind if I was a Jew when the Nazi soldiers walking into the movie theater because your not even supposed to be in the movie theater to begin with. (15/2) 9)Use Fix-Up Techniques- I don't know what the definition of fascist is. I went on dictionary.com and the definition is a governmental system led by a dictator having complete power, forcibly suppressing opposition and criticism, regimenting all industry, commerce, etc., and emphasizing an aggressive nationalism and often racism. 10)Summarize- A group of boys go to a American movie in the mid afternoon and don't expect to be taken by Nazi soldiers. All of the boys (besides one) are German. They know that there friend Samuel is a Jew but doesn't let the Nazi soldiers know it. The group of boys are taken to a concentration camp and are worked really hard.
In response to Emily- I agree with you when it was a big deal that Robert got separated from Sergio because Robert wanted to be just like his big brother. Sergio was a leader to Roberto and Roberto did whatever Sergio told him to do.
Mason Bernas- 7th hour english 1)Question- I dont understand why the Germain soldiers captured the kids at the movie. They were Italian boys and Italians were on the Germans side in the war. Why did they capture them? (17/1,2) 2)Connection- I can connect to when they were all singing songs on the way to the camp,my busdriver would yell at me within the first tree lines of the song (25/2) 3)Judge/Evaluate- Roberto does not seem like he believes wheat Ezno is telling him about the death camp for Jews. I think hes scared for Ezno since Ezno is Jewish. (all of page 59) 4)Determining Importance- In the begining it was very important that Samuel/Ezno took off his Star of David. this was obviously a big deal when the Nazis came and captured them all. (12/1,2,3,4) 5)Prediction- I think Ezno will eventually get caught and sent somewhere else. Whether hes put in that same holding pen with the two girls that Roberto and Ezno give food to or sent to the other side of Germany.(none) 6)Infer- Since there was such segregation for Jews Roberto and his friends must have met Samuel when they were very young. Unless Itally didnt have those laws to keep Jews separated form everyone else. (last line of 5,6/1,2)
In responce to Zach-- I didnt know what facist meant either, but I didnt look it up like you did. And yes I agree with you that Samuel is the nicest because not only did he switch seats but towards the end of the chapter he gives his food to not only Roberto but also the "theif" guy and the two girls. Yet he says he's not starving yet.
1.Infer- I infer that all those kids parents that are still back at where the kids came from are probably really worried about their kids and where they could possibly be at that time that late.
2.Question- Why did Enzo not try to start an attack on Wasser when there was a lot of them and one German soldier in an area that was a good distance away from where the other German soldiers are.
3.Connection- When Roberto sees another train load of other captured people he reflects on how he got captured and treated horribly just like that and how that was just like him when he first came in there.
4.Determine Importance- I think when Roberto was walking towards the captured Polish Jewish people to give the one girl an egg and the one German soldier was shouting at him he probably did not just only save his life when he spat towards the Polish Jewish people though he also probably those other captured peoples lives as well. Because he was going to a originally give Enzo’s egg to the one Polish Jewish person, though when the German soldier was shouting at him he acted like he didn’t hear him and so he spat on them to make it look like he wasn’t going to help them out.
5.Judge/Evaluate- I was very amazed and impressed by when Roberto gave up his food and risked his life to give it to the Polish Jewish person and not just keep his food to himself.
6.Summarize- • This author was very inspired to write a book about what things were like. • She puts a lot of detail in to give everybody a realistic full picture on how gruesome some of these scenes are. • She makes the book very suspenseful to keep the reader in check and how hard things were.
I think the question that Cassie had was a very good question and I agree with her on why an American Film is being shoed in Italy there. Good question Cassie.
Infer- Were the boys taken from the movie theatre because the soldiers assumed that they were Jewish?
Question- Why did the soldiers choose a movie theatre out of all places to obtain Children?
Connection- I like American movies to but they played it in a place like Italy. I think they did this to expand American culture, or another purpose?
Predict- I predicted that Roberto was going to be sent to a concentration camp due to the fact that no one truly knows his true religion.
Visualize- The first chapter and second were great for creating a strong mental image like when the boys were taken away on train or back to where it all started when they went to go see an American movie as to a dark room and a sudden beam of light and soldiers marching. Or when a small group of boys were shot and Roberto witnessed it. Skyler Sather 4th hour Summarize- 1st person view of a boy named Roberto First two chapters explain the abduction of Roberto and his friends Memo, Sergio, and Samuel. These characters are abducted in an Italian movie theater showcasing an American movie.
And to Zachary's question I do agree on the fact that they outnumbered the quantity of soldiers but quality over quantity that soldier undoubtedly was armed with multiple deadly weapons let alone the fact soldiers have been trained to kill, none the less I thought the EXACT same thing.
Skyler, I think the reason that the green police went to the movies is because it was an American film, and they were fighting the Americans so the boys would be considered traitors.
1) visualize-> When Roberto and Samuele where on the train and the boys were shot, the details made me think i was actually there seeing it with my own eyes. The details are very realistic and let you think you are really there.
2) Connection-> The boys are scared and don't really know what will happen next, when in real life, we are just like that. Scared and vulnerable.
3) Infer-> While in the train Sam was going to try to leave, and Roberto followed him and they went to the bathroom, the guard was out there and I think he could hear them. I think that this is kind of foreshadowing that they are in real trouble and will end up dead.
4) Question-> Why did Roberto's big brother not want Samuele to go to the movies with him and his friends?
5) judge/evaluate-> I was suspicious when the boys wanted to go to the movie. They said that it was an American film and their country was fighting them, so i knew something bad was going to happen.
6)determining importance-> I believe that it is very important that the boys do what their older brother said to do, be quiet and don't do anything to stand out, so they wont get caught.
1) Infer-I infer that eventually people will learn that Samuele is a Jew and something bad will happen and he will suffer some consequences.
2)Question-Will any of the boys survive the war?
3)Connection-It is hard for me to imagine what it’s like being at the camp and not having enough food to eat and always being cold. However I only heard these kind of stories from my grandma from Poland because she knew people who went through the horrors of the war.
4)Determine Importance-Knowing and understanding what happened to people during WWII is very important to prevent something like this from ever happening to us again.
5)Judge/Evaluate-I’m impressed with the boys compassion during such a difficult time. Having barely enough to eat for themselves they still shared food with the two girls on the other side of the fence.
6)Summarize-The book is based on a true story of a Italian man who during WWII was deported to a German work camp. I think everyone who survived this tragic situation and was able to come back to their countries were changed forever.
Ashley I think Roberto’s big brother didn’t want Samuele to go to the movies with them because he knew he was Jewish and he knew how dangerous it would be to be seen with him.

ReplyDelete1. Question: I wonder if Memo and Sergio will ever reunite with Roberto and Enzo? (31/4)
2. Connect: Lots of times I may pay for things for my friends, like popcorn or candy at the movies, and they will say they will pay me back, although most of the time they never do. This happens to Memo also. (4/5)
3. Infer: When Sergio says “Fact number two: don’t play with fire,” it makes me think that something bad is going to happen in result to Samuele being a Jewish boy. It was a warning for what was coming next. (10/1)
4. Visualize: When it describes how Enzo looks once he got in the truck after being beaten, I can definitely visualize him with a blank cold stare/gaze while sitting in the truck with blood running down his face and a spot of vomit on his face while Roberto is looking at him in awe. (38/6)
5. Determine Importance: I thought that when Enzo put his life on the line for Roberto so they could stay together it was very important because it shows how great of friends they must be. Lots of people wouldn’t do that. (33/5)

ReplyDelete1)Question- I don't know what the definition of fascist is. I went on dictionary.com and the definition is a governmental system led by a dictator having complete power, forcibly suppressing opposition and criticism, regimenting all industry, commerce, etc., and emphasizing an aggressive nationalism and often racism.(9/3)
2)Connect- They talked a little bit about the bombing of Pearl Harbor and WWII and it reminded me of history day because the bombing of Pearl Harbor was my topic. (4/4)
3)Predict- I predict that the boys will in fact get stopped by the Nazi police and get questioned on where there going, etc. (11/2)
4)Judge/Evaluate- Memo seems like he is a ladies man because he is always talking about girls. he was talking about Teresa and how he has a "thing" for her and he also talked about a gondola ride with a girl. (5/1)
5)Build- Samuel is a Jew but he is probably the nicest person out of the whole group of boys. He offered to switch spots with Robert so he could see the movie better. (13/4)
6)Infer- I know that Jews weren't allowed with the German people so from what I know, Samuel and Roberto must have been friends before all of the commotion began. (6/1)
7)Visualize- I could visualize Sergio wanting Samuel's Star of David and Samuel giving it to him. (12/1)
8)Determine Importance- I would be scared out of my mind if I was a Jew when the Nazi soldiers walking into the movie theater because your not even supposed to be in the movie theater to begin with. (15/2)
9)Use Fix-Up Techniques- I don't know what the definition of fascist is.
In response to Emily-
I agree with you when it was a big deal that Robert got separated from Sergio because Robert wanted to be just like his big brother. Sergio was a leader to Roberto and Roberto did whatever Sergio told him to do.

ReplyDelete1)Question- I dont understand why the Germain soldiers captured the kids at the movie. They were Italian boys and Italians were on the Germans side in the war. Why did they capture them? (17/1,2)
2)Connection- I can connect to when they were all singing songs on the way to the camp,my busdriver would yell at me within the first tree lines of the song (25/2)
3)Judge/Evaluate- Roberto does not seem like he believes wheat Ezno is telling him about the death camp for Jews. I think hes scared for Ezno since Ezno is Jewish. (all of page 59)
4)Determining Importance- In the begining it was very important that Samuel/Ezno took off his Star of David. this was obviously a big deal when the Nazis came and captured them all. (12/1,2,3,4)
5)Prediction- I think Ezno will eventually get caught and sent somewhere else. Whether hes put in that same holding pen with the two girls that Roberto and Ezno give food to or sent to the other side of Germany.(none)
6)Infer- Since there was such segregation for Jews Roberto and his friends must have met Samuel when they were very young. Unless Itally didnt have those laws to keep Jews separated form everyone else. (last line of 5,6/1,2)
In responce to Zach--
I didnt know what facist meant either, but I didnt look it up like you did. And yes I agree with you that Samuel is the nicest because not only did he switch seats but towards the end of the chapter he gives his food to not only Roberto but also the "theif" guy and the two girls. Yet he says he's not starving yet.

ReplyDelete1.Infer- I infer that all those kids parents that are still back at where the kids came from are probably really worried about their kids and where they could possibly be at that time that late.
6.Summarize-
• This author was very inspired to write a book about what things were like.
DeleteQuestion- Why did the soldiers choose a movie theatre out of all places to obtain Children?
Connection- I like American movies to but they played it in a place like Italy. I think they did this to expand American culture, or another purpose?
Predict- I predicted that Roberto was going to be sent to a concentration camp due to the fact that no one truly knows his true religion.
Visualize- The first chapter and second were great for creating a strong mental image like when the boys were taken away on train or back to where it all started when they went to go see an American movie as to a dark room and a sudden beam of light and soldiers marching. Or when a small group of boys were shot and Roberto witnessed it.
Skyler Sather 4th hour
Summarize- 1st person view of a boy named Roberto
First two chapters explain the abduction of Roberto and his friends Memo, Sergio, and Samuel.
ReplyDelete1) visualize-> When Roberto and Samuele where on the train and the boys were shot, the details made me think i was actually there seeing it with my own eyes.
ASHLEY DEVINE HOUR 4
1) Infer-I infer that eventually people will learn that Samuele is a Jew and something bad will happen and he will suffer some consequences.
ReplyDelete2)Question-Will any of the boys survive the war?
