1) Question- When I was reading this book, the thing that irritated me the most was, why did Arbeiter pluck the barbwire string, and hit the little girl on the face? What did she even do to him? It makes me want to do the same thing to him, like what he did to the little girl. Yes, I get it that they are Jews, but how would he like it if he were treated that way? (Page 63 Paragraphs 5)
2) Connect-The connection that I had was when Roberto went to go and sleep in this one house that no one no longer lived in. He woke up the very next morning cooking some Buckwheat, eating it deliciously, going back to sleep and waking up cooking some more. It totally had me think back and had this image of me when I was little and I would wake up and cook some noodles for myself, going back to sleep then, cook some more noodles. (Page 134 Paragraphs 2-5)
3) Predict-What I think will happen next in the next chapter is, Roberto will take the boy with him, and Roberto is going to go back to Italy. Or where he came from. He is maybe going to help the little boy go back to where he can survive, and not be alone.
4) Build- Not only did I learn that Enzo died, but I also know that Roberto was a brave boy, he is strong, confident, and he never really gives up on things. He tried his best on the hard things and he led the way to himself to go on. The event that was happening in the story was quite surprising. I never really expect that Roberto would escape and not get caught. Because in my mind, I was thinking that Roberto would stay where he was, and not leave.
5) Visualize-When I was reading from the very beginning, I could imagine Europe having gray sky all the time, seeing not that many people outside, no freedom for certain people, Roberto and the boys going to the movies, getting capture put into train cars. By the time I read through the middle, I imagine Roberto, and Enzo being together always not having much clothes to wear, not much to eat. Then the Jews came upon, Roberto and Enzo gave some of their own food to the two little Jewish girls. Roberto running away and going on his own when Enzo died.
6) Determine Importance- What I thought what was really confusing is when the Jewish or German boy was holding an axe and was inside the house that Roberto was sleeping in. I don't know if he lives in that house, or did he went searching for survivors. But, I think he lives in that house
1) Question- When it says Enzo became accustomed to eating raw eggs, I wonder how he would not get sick from eating them raw? (72/3)
2) Judge- I think the boy was traumatized, because he may have seen his family get killed. Also I think that is why he wouldn’t talk to Roberto. (129/1)
3) Build- I thought Roberto was though but when it says, “the tears were pressed inside his eyes”, it made me think that he is scared of what is going on and what is going to happen. (76/1)
4) Infer- I infer that Roberto and Enzo are bigger than Memo because, it says they are better and faster at the work then him. So that made me think they are bigger because that is usually the case with physical labor. (74/1)
5) Visualize- The description of the boys eating the days from hatching chicks was so descriptive, the visual that came in my head actually grossed me out. (73/3)
6) Determine Importance- The sentence, “He spoke without emotion, through the tears pressed inside his eyes.” was very well written because, I could just picture it and how exactly how the character was feeling at that moment. (76/1)
Rosemary, I think your prediction is a great and I was also thinking something like that when I was reading. Your other learning strategies are good too but, on some of them they don't have the page number and paragraph number. Just a heads up. -Lexie Brown-3rd hour
1.Question-How big were the eggs because each kid fit two of the eggs in their mouths? (79/1) 2.Predict-I think that both of the kids will have to go to concentration camps or work camps or even death because they both stole the eggs from the chicken pen. (80) 3.Connect-I heard that eating raw eggs has a significant source of protein and a lot of athletes eat them to get their muscles stronger and to get bigger. (72/3) 4.Visualize-I could actually see in my head the kid’s family being killed by the Nazis. I kind of grossed me out inside my head. It was also horrifying. (129/1) 5.Judge-I think that Roberto is looking after Roverto so that no one notices that he is a Jew and stays with him and is loyal to him even when Roberto gets in trouble. This is really said when they get in trouble with the eggs. (79/2) 6.Determine Importance-I think the scene where Enzo looks after Roberto because I think that is an important scene that reflects their friendship with each other. (79/5) Lexie, I really your infer. I didn’t really think about that. I now think of it and that is a really good observation.
Mason Bernas- 7th hour 1)Question- How did the boy survive the attack on the city? What happened there anyway? (128,1) 2)Judge- The boy is very smart and knows his way around the town and the land south of the town. (139,4) 3)Biuld- Roberto is much more mentally and physicaly tough than when he was in Venece. He keeps pushing himself to keep moving and when he hurt his knee running after the boy he didn't even stop. (151,2) 4)Predict- At the end of the chapter he is scared to be seen because the truck stops suddenly, I think he will over react to them just stopping and get caught running away. (169,3) 5)Determine Importance- It is very important the Samuel told stories to Roberto every night because that is helping him get through nights in the woods and it is a way to keep Samuel in his heart. (113,4) 6) Visualize- I can easily see Roberto kneeling by a creek digging for bug hiding under baseball sized rocks, then eating the bugs and throwing up. (112, 2)
In responce to Noah- I didnt realize that those eggs had to have been smaller than a normal egg. or they have huge mouths. I also agree with you that when Samuel stood up for Roberto and took the punishment with him was important for their friendship, before Samuel died I thought that they would be together till the end. Guess not.
Jac¬¬¬ob Ringwelski- 5th hour 1.Question- Why is the boy so fond of animals? (145/3) 2. Connect- I could relate to caring about a friend and loving them as if they were a brother much like Roberto loving Enzo. (100/9) 3. Predict- I predict that Roberto will be punished by Wasser severely for stealing the eggs. (77/5) 4. Build- I can guess that Enzo is a caring person and thinks about others before himself and a prime example of this is when he offers Roberto his boots. (98/6) 5. Infer- I can infer that Roberto and this boy will become good friends since the boy stopped trying to kill him and they seem to be getting along pretty well right now. (130/3) 6. Visualize- I can see the rabies craved wolf trying to attack Roberto and it seemed like a situation would never want to be in. (118/8)
Noah, I agree with you that Roberto was trying to hide Enzo being a jew. I think that he did this because if they found out Enzo was a jew, Roberto would be punished since he was friends with him.
Cassie Ebner – 3rd Hour English 1) Question- Why was that particular village destroyed? (137/5) 2) Predict- I predict that the boy and Roberto will continue on their journey until they run into a work camp. That is how I predict Roberto with be reunited with Memo and/or Sergio. (N/A) 3) Judge/Evaluate- I think the boy is possibly somewhat traumatized. Whether he saw his family get killed or not, they were still brutally killed. I think that is why he won’t talk to Roberto. (129/1) 4) Connect- I see a similarity with the boy and somebody I used to know. Someone I used to know actually stopped talking because there was a death in his family. And from what I know he still doesn’t talk today. I think the boy in the story and the boy from my past share some similar traits. (129/1) 5) Build- Initially, I though Roberto was naïve and couldn’t care for himself completely. Obviously, I was proven wrong when Roberto ran away and was able to care for himself and survive alone for a few days in the frigid cold. (Much of “The Woods” and “The Cold”.) 6) Visualize- There was a strong visualization that came with the wolf scene. At first when I read that the wolf is sick and near death, I felt a sense of relief. But when he tries to get his blanket and the wolf goes “crazy”, I immediately saw that in my mind. (118/7&8) In response to Jacob- I think a possibility of why the boy is so fond of animals has to do with the fact that his family was just killed. Maybe animals are all he feels confortable with. Maybe that is also why he won't talk to Roberto. He is to afraid that something could happen and he could end up alone again.
1)Predict- I predict that the boys will be caught when they are stealing eggs. I thought this the first time they did it, but when they found baby chicks still inside that drew more attention to the stealing so that's why I thought that they would be caught. (73/3)
2)Visualize- I unfortunetly got a very good image in my head of when the boys went to eat the eggs and they had baby chicks in them! It was horrible to see and I don't know what I would have done if I would have found them. It was a bad image to see, I was sad for the chicks. (73/3)
3)Determine Importance- I think it was a very important part when Roberto got the stone from the girl on the otherside of the fence. I think it was important because of how it said he squeezed the rock as hard as he could. I think the rock will become very important to him and that's why this was a powerful part. (77/3)
4)Judge/Evaluatep- I can evaluate how desperate the boys really where for food when they opened the chick eggs and ate them none the less. I couldn't imagine anyone eating an unhatched baby chick so that lets me evaluate how desperate the situation really was. (73/3)
5)Infer- I made the inference that Wasser didn't get mad when Enzo was calling him names not only because he didn't know the langauge, but because he didn't want to seem weak by not knowing what he was saying. When you don't know what someone is saying you pretend you are still in control by not over reacting to it. (79/5)
6)Question- Why don't the German soliders give the boys blankets so they don't die? After all, they only wanted to the boys for workers so why not try to get a much out of them as possible, as bad as that sounds, but still. (83/1)
To Noah I was also thinking the same thing about the eggs being kept in the boys mouth. When I think about how big the eggs in my fridge are, there is no way to fit 2 of them in your mouth. But I realized that more natural chickens, the ones that don't lay eggs for big egg companies, lay much smaller eggs. And often times they are not even white, usually brown.
1. Question- My big question is when the soldier caught Roberto for stealing how come he didn’t just shoot him like the other soldiers did when those other kids started to walk towards the end of the train in section 1?
2. Predict- I predict that the boys will come across a Russian bear while they travel in the dangerous woods and I think when they come across that bear they are gonna end up having to kill it to stay alive.
3. Summarize- In section two of Stones In Water Roberto has lost his best friend due to when Samuel (Enzo) was fighting off the thefts when they were trying to steal their boots. Then Roberto starts to walk towards the woods expecting to get shot and he doesn’t so then he starts his journey to escape. Then one night when he is awoken from a loud noise when he was sleeping up in a tree he drops his blanket down and goes down to the ground to see a large owl snatch a hamster then when he turns around he sees a injured wolf then the wolf topples on his blanket then Roberto runs away and loses his blanket. And now Roberto came to a dead town that has been raided and he comes across a boy a little younger then him and they start off to the woods together.
4. Judge/Evaluate- When Roberto comes across the alone boy in the dead house I then see how horrible that boy must feel when he acts unresponsive and almost dead in a way.
5. Visualize- When the author describes how terribly hungry Roberto is and how the author describes him pushing his fist into his stomach to just try to bring down some of the hunger pain and how he must look and feel from just barley staying alive half the time.
6. Use fix-up techniques- The only time I was just a little confused from all that advanced vocabulary was when the author used the word provisions and I have also heard that word before from other books. So then I came to realize that it means like supplies that you need a lot.
7. Halle I think that your prediction about Roberto and Enzo getting caught for stealing eggs out of the chicken coop was very intresting and surprisingly accurate because if you think about it those soldiers would be very horrible at guarding if they didn’t catch Roberto and Enzo stealing eggs in the open, good prediction Halle.
Emily Bauman, hour 1 1. Question- How did Enzo and Roberto not get really sick from the eggs? (72/3)
2. Connect- I, much like Roberto and Enzo, have a very good relationship with some people. I would do anything for them, much like Roberto’s and Enzo’s relationship. (100/9)
3. Visualize- I can visualize Enzo eating the baby chicks because he was so hungry. I think I would have been like Roberto and not have eaten it. The sound would have grossed me out. (73/3)
4. Infer- I think that the little girl will eventually give away that Roberto is giving them food by screaming or making it noticeable while he is giving the older girl the food. (72/2)
5. Determine Importance- I think that it was important that Roberto held on the Enzo’s blanket/potato sack. It shows just how much he meant to him, and how he wants to make sure that he is always close to him. (118)
6. Judge/ Evaluate- I think that the boy was very scared and/or somewhat traumatized. Whether you have seen your family get killed or just know that they have it would be very hard. (129/1)
In response to Zachary Mizgalski, To your question, I think that they did not kill Roberto and Enzo for stealing food because as it had said earlier on, they were one of the hardest workers and I don’t think they could afford to lose them. Also, I think that they couldn’t afford to lose anyone in general. There had been a lot of deaths and they needed all the people they could.
1) connect-> When Enzo went and gave the food over to the sick/dieing Jewish girl some food, it made me think partly of myself. I always try to help people whenever I can.
2) visualize-> i can see Enzo eating the baby chick and the look on his face, it was a mixture between terror/nervous and kinda shaky.
3) Use fix-up tech.-> when Enzo was face to face with the wolf, he should have grabbed Sam's Blanket before the wolf died on it.
4) evaluate-> Enzo is holding up good, seeing as his best friend is dead, his brother probably is to, and his parents are worried sick.
5) Infer-> Enzo and his little friend he found in the house in the village are haveing a rough time surviving so i think that they will die very soon.
1)Infer- I assume as I keep reading that the story will get more tragically complicated and more people may die. This story becomes more sad by the chapter.
2)Question- How in the world can he eat raw eggs not mentioning there were baby chicks in it?
3)Connection- I understand that one of the most important things in life is having some good friends. I can imagine how much it hurts losing one of them.
4)Determine Importance- At present day we take peace and happiness for granted. When we read these kind of stories it makes us appreciate what we have know.
5)Judge/Evaluate- I am impressed with Enzo’s bravery when he was standing up for his friend. Unfortunately he paid the highest price: his life.
6)Summarize- Two Italian friends captured by Germans were taken through Europe from one work camp to another. Enzo got shot by the German solider and died. Roberto’s saga continues in occupied by Germans Europe.

Judge/Evaluate- I would say Roberto is kind considering he gave his food to that young girl and strong willed based on handling difficult situations such as the wolf. Pg. 123 #2 5. Infer- I believe that upon taking refuge in the abandoned village Roberto will be found by the Nazis. Pg.127 #4 6. Visualize- I can picture the slim skinned wolf snarling and at the ready to attack Roberto.

ReplyDelete2) visualize-> i can see Enzo eating the baby chick and the look on his face, it was a mixture between terror/nervous and kinda shaky.
I don't know who you are but some of your thoughts make sense.I wonder how you help other people?

ReplyDelete1)Infer- I assume as I keep reading that the story will get more tragically complicated and more people may die.

6. Visualize- I can picture the slim skinned wolf snarling and at the ready to attack Roberto.
Message to Caroline response to question: I guess only few can stomach the fact that there could be a chick inside although its life and death given the current situation.
