Stones in Water - Section 3

17 comments:

  1. Infer- Were the boys taken from the movie theatre because the soldiers assumed that they were Jewish?

Question- Why did the soldiers choose a movie theatre out of all places to obtain Children?

Connection- I like American movies to but they played it in a place like Italy. I think they did this to expand American culture, or another purpose?

Predict- I predicted that Roberto was going to be sent to a concentration camp due to the fact that no one truly knows his true religion.

Visualize- The first chapter and second were great for creating a strong mental image like when the boys were taken away on train or back to where it all started when they went to go see an American movie as to a dark room and a sudden beam of light and soldiers marching. Or when a small group of boys were shot and Roberto witnessed it.

Summarize- 1st person view of a boy named Roberto
First two chapters explain the abduction of Roberto and his friends Memo, Sergio, and Samuel.
These characters are abducted in an Italian movie theatre showcasing an American movie.

  3. Infer- Why was this book called stones in water?

question-I wonder what was goin through the boys mind when they got caught?

connection- It seems the two boys are good friends so it reminds me of all my close friends as well.

predict- I predict that even if the boys get taken away from eachother they will never forget there freindship.

visulize- The part where they got captured realy gave me a good visual in my mind of there reactions and faces they were probibly making and very nervous.

sumerize-pages 1-70 were about them sneaking out to go to the movie and then when they were watching it in the theater nazi gaurds came in and took them away in a train.

  4. Infer-Roberto is learning how to survive and eat in the camp, he doesnt like raw eggs but he has been eating them and trying to know they are goin to keep him alive because its a source of food.

Question-I still dont under stand after everything i have read about the holocaust including this book why the soldiers and people were so mean it doesnt make sence.

Connection- Roberto always has to be eating, every page i read theres always somthing hes eating so its similur to me because i am always eating as well.

Predict- I predict roberto is goin to escape some how and bring some of the people with him.

Visulize-I could visulize how gloomy europe looked and how weirdand strang because theres no freedom anymore so that would be hard to come back to your home country and have no freedom.

Determine importance-They are very strong friends and they will always be great friends, becasue they have gone through unthinkible things.

I like how you are thinking, but can you somehow explain what you are confusing at? And check on your spellings. I can actually answer your question. What you are asking is a pretty good question. The reason the soldiers are mean to people is that they are following direct rules from whom you can say Hitler. He hates Jewish for no reasons, and if you are confuse at things. I think the best thing you can do is just re-read slowly and understand it.

    1) Question-What I don’t get is, Why did the boy free Roberto, Then run away again? It’s just so confusing to me. Why would anyone free someone? Then run off again. The point of freeing someone is letting them be safe, and helping them too. Not just run off? (Page 166 Paragraph 3)
    2) Connection-The same connection that I had in this book was when Roberto and the boy ran away from the village and camped in the woods, trying to find some woods to build a fire. But couldn’t trust the boy to stay alone because Roberto thought he was going run away. I remember when I was little we went camping, and I needed to go use the bathroom but it was dark, I was scared. So I asked my sisters to come along. I knew she was going to ditch me, but since it was dark she wouldn’t. As soon as I got out of the bathroom she ran and I started chasing her too, because I was scared. (Page150 Paragraph 3)
    3) Prediction-I was actually surprising that the story ended in a different that I pictured. I didn’t know that the Italian Solider would come into the story, I just pictured that Roberto would keep paddling into some village and search for food and help.
    4) Build-I liked how the story went so far, what I just don’t like is the boy. He seems like a selfish person. He ditched Roberto, and look what they got into. Trouble. Besides he freed Roberto, and then ran away? Who does that anyway?
    5) Visualize-What I’ve been picturing towards the story is pretty cool. From what I’ve been reading. Roberto always getting capture, getting shoot. Running away. I imagined him crawling through this bush and hitting his head hard on an object. Finding a boat and paddle, until he met some boys who kept waving at him and a woman who kept staring at him, until he met the Italian Soldier, Both helping each other until they could find a plan.
    6) Determine Importance-What I thought was it felt pretty good knowing that Roberto survived and knowing he was able to get away. (Page 171 Paragraphs 6-7).

    1) Question- I wonder why Roberto’s arm isn’t infected from the bullet because back then bullets weren’t that clean and they still aren’t but at least now we have antibiotics? (157/6)

    2) Connection- Text to world- When it says Sergio told Roberto that when he was getting his smallpox vaccination that if he relaxed it would hurt less. That is exactly what the doctor says
when you get a tetanus shot these days. (155/1)

    3) Predict- I think the people are going to amputate Roberto’s arm when he got shot because that is what they did back then when people got shot in the limb and also because it said that the lady put the knife in hot water (getting it ready for cutting) and it said that she got out the vodka (to get him drunk so it will be less painful) (157/1)

    4) Judge/Evaluate- After reading the book I thought that the book was an overall great book. At parts it got a little boring but for the most part Donna Jo Napoli did a very well job at keeping most of the book interesting. (all/all)

    5) Infer- When Roberto told the boy the “not act crazy” when he was gone to get wood for the fire, I think that meant not to do anything that would bring attention to their area or to not do something stupid that could get him or each other hurt. (150/2)

    6) Determine Importance- When it says “He wanted to use a coaxing voice”, I think that was really well written and a good word choice on Napoli’s part. (149/1)

    In responce to Rosemary:
I was wondering the same thing about why the boy freed Roberto and then ran away again. I was also reading over your post and it looks like you have a few grammatical errors and some little mistakes. Just a heads up.

1)Question-Why is the Roman soldier so willing to help Roberto even though in the end you find out he can barely help and care for himself? (178 to 179/All)
2)Predict-I predict that Roberto will make it home to his mother. Also, I predict that he will meet up with Sergio and/or Memo. (N/A)
3)Judge/Evaluate- I think the Roman soldier is a very compassionate and sympathetic person. He was willing to help Roberto even though it was risky and he would have probably been killed if they were caught. He also had sympathy for all the Jews he saw when he was a soldier, which is what lead him to run away. (Chapters: Fever & Stones)
4)Visualize- I think one of the strongest visualizations of section 3 was definitely when the Roman soldier was trying to clean Roberto gunshot wound. I almost winced as I was reading it because of the perfect word choice that was used. (194/3-5)
5)Determining Importance- Although this is towards the end of the book, I still think it is a very important part. Up until this point, even though Roberto was against the war, he was still a supporter of Italy. When Roberto says he is going to be a “partigiano”, he is really going to take a stand agianst the war when he gets home. (207/5)
    6)Summarize- (Stones(the final chapter))
a.We learn about the Roman soldier’s inital plan for Roberto, which is to take him to Romania and then take him to a hospital for prisoners of war.
b.The Roman soldier finally learns that Roberto is Italian, so now they can both speak to eachother.
c.We learn that Maurizio used to be a voluentary soldier but once he saw the horrors of the war he ran away.
d.At the very end, we hear Maurizio plan to become a partigiano, which then influences Roberto to become the same.

    In response to Lexie:
To answer your question; I believe it was infected. But even if it wasn't just because he got shot, it wouldn't necessarily mean that he would get an infection. It would definitly mean a higher chance, but it is possible he just got lucky.

  8. Question- I wonder why the nazi wants to help roberto live.

Predict- I predict roberto will make it home safeley.

Visulize- I visulize everything in this book, this book is very specific like i visulize the soildgers and roborto very well.

Summerize- Samuel dies at the end because he was very cold so he froze to death and roberto makes it home to spain.

1.Question- Why did the lady bring a knife over to Roberto and some alcohol? Is the alcohol going to be used to kill the germs? (157/1)
2.Connection-If I get a cut or get injured outside I don’t put alcohol on it to kill the wound. I usually just put some antiseptic wash to kill the germs and stop it from being infected and making the wound worse than it really is. (157/2)
3.Predict-In the beginning of the 3rd section I think that Roberto will make the long journey from the Ukraine all the way back to Italy. I also think that his relatives will very happy to see him but be really sad because of his major bullet wound. (146/1)
4.Judge/Evaluate-I think the author did a wonderful job of describing what it would be like to work at a work camp and be a Jewish boy trying to hide and not let the other kids there now that he was. I also think she made the book be really close to what happened to some boys in Europe during the reign of Hitler and the Nazis.(The whole book)
5.Visualize-I think the author did a well job describing what happened when the lady put the knife in Roberto’s arm to try to get the bullet out of his arm. I could really tell what was happening and it kind of grossed me out. (157/all)
6.Importance-I think that the last time Roberto felt the Polish girl’s stone it made him sad because he tried his best to give her food. I also think that it made him glad because he probably thought about how lucky he is to not have starved and got some food to eat. (204/2)

Cassie Ebner-I really like your summary. It super shortens down what happened in the last chapter of the book. I also think that the Roman soldier was nice to Roberto and that they could actually speak the same language.

    1) Question- A question I have is to the author and it is why did the author take out the boy at the end because it seemed that Roberto and the little boy were becoming to have a stronger relationship so I just didn’t really like that part.

    2) Connect- When Roberto was riding in the back of the pick up truck and it said that he was rolling around in there when it was being drove, I can make a connection to that because I have rode in the back of pick up before and when you go up a hill or down a hill or hit a corner you really get shaken up back there.

    3) Summarize- So in the last chapters Roberto and the boy go on together and they come to a disagreement and when Roberto goes to get some fire wood the boy takes the sled and moves on. So then Roberto is tracing his footsteps and he comes across another area where he is shot in the arm and he blacks out. Then he wakes up naked in a chair where he sees the boy sleeping on the couch and then a strange lady comes over and pours vodka on his wound and the takes it out painfully. Then later he escapes by hiding in the back of a pick up truck and then he is soon noticed and then he takes off running while being chased. Then he comes across a boat that rides in then one night a Italian soldier comes across him and knocks him out the Roberto is forced to paddle them both while at the same time taking turns to pretend to be a soldier and a captive to fake out posts on the way. Then they actually become close and then they both decide to join a group that is against the war.

    4) Visualize- I can really visualize when Roberto is getting the bullet taken out of his arm and the horrible pain he must be going through and all the blood.

    5) Build- When Roberto and the soldier travel together longer I then start to see that the soldier actually seems to care about Roberto and he really is also just a person lost in a horrible environment and that shows a courage’s side of him.

    6) Predict- I never predicted the story to end this way. I thought that Roberto and the boy would somehow make it out together and get back to safety though I never thought that they would even split up so that was a bit interesting to me.

To Noah’s question yah I think the vodka she put on his arm has some sort of antiseptic in it and that helps with making sure that his wound doesn’t get infected and that it will heal right. Good question Noah.

1)Visualize-A very discriptive part was when Roberto was in the house with the woman in the beginning of the section. When I read it I could acctually see the room in my head and I could get an idea for how he felt about this place. (156/3)

2)Predict- I predict that when the woman walked over to Roberto with the knife that she was going to use it to dig out the bullet from his body. (157/1)

3)Infer- I infer that the reason Roberto thought he was so stupid for leaving the boy alone because he thought the boy betrayed him by leaving and taking all of the supplies. Also because he knew the boy couldn't really understand him so the communication wasn't really there to begin with. (151/4)

4)Question-What was wrong with his knee when he was running through the woods? It said that stabbing pains ran through his leg but it never said from what. (151/2)

5)Connect-I made a connection to when Roberto remembered his brother telling him to relax and it won't hurt as badly when he was getting a shot. That's what doctors tell people now days when you go for a shot, and my dad has told me the same advice many times. (155/1)

6)Fix-Up Techniques-I had to re-read the part when he was running through the woods trying to find Ragazzo and he hurt his knee. I re-read it because I didn't know how he hurt his knee or what happened that would cause that so I re-read it and I still couldn't figure it out. (151/2)

Noah Plautz-I agree with your connection. You never really hear of people putting alcohol on wounds these days, especially vodka. It's usually antiseptic things, like Neosporin, as you said. I think that the new fancy things that we have today for helping healing, we have it much better of health wise than they did back then, so we are lucky.

Question- Where did this soldier randomly come from? (178/2)
Connect- When I get a sliver, I have to heat up a needle to remove it and it hurts a lot so I can only imagine the pain Roberto has to deal with with the knife. (157/6)
Predict- I predict that Roberto and Maurizio will become more of a father son relationship and be successful in the partigiani. (208/3)
Judge- The boy cares about animals enough that he gives up his own food to feed the dog. (146/1)
Infer- I can infer the lady is getting the knife heated up to remove the bullet from Roberto’s arm. (157/3)
Visualize- I could see Roberto instantly dropping to the ground after being shot. (154/5)
    Halle-
I don't think Roberto was stupid for thinking that the boy ditched him. How would you like if you had to deal with being abandened throughout your life.I'm sure Roberto wasn't too upset about it at first.

1- Visualize. I could really visualize when Roberto and the Soldier were huddled under the canoe in complete darkness, just waiting for a Nazi Soldier to see them. I can imagine how scared they were. (199-200, all)
2- Predict. I predict that Roberto gets back home and somehow, and in some way become part of a group that is against the war. Maybe not the partigiana, but will become active and try to stop the war. (207, 4 and 8)
3- Question. I wonder why the Italian Soldier talked to Roberto even though he knew, or thought, he couldn’t understand him. (179, 2)
4- Judge/Evaluate. I think that Donna Jo Npoli did a really nice job writing this book. I thought it eventful in every chapter and she almost always kept you guessing at the end of each chapter to make sure you wanted to keep reading. I also thought that she did a really nice job showing how the soldiers and kids were really treated during the war. I really enjoyed the book. (entire book)
5- Determine Importance. I thought that when Roberto shared to the Italian Soldier that he wanted to become a partigiana. It was important because at the beginning of the war he did not think much of the war. He just went along with what his country was doing. But throughout the book, seeing all the towns that had been massacred and taken off, the way soldiers were treated, and the way that Jewish people were treated he changed his mind and formed his own opinion. He is definitely a dynamic character. (207, 4)
6- Connect. I can connect to when Roberto remembers his brother telling him that if he doesn’t think about it, the pain won’t be so bad. Just this year, my friend and I were talking about getting shots and she told me that she tells herself to not think about the pain, and the pain goes away. Just like Sergio. (151,1)
I response to Halle Breske, I think that his knee hurt because he had fallen on it earlier in the woods. I was also a little confused about that part.

Question-Why does Roberto want to become a partigiani?(207/2)
Predict- I predict that Maurizio and Roberto will get pass the soldiers and make it back home to Italy, and become partigiano’s,(199/4)
Judge/evaluate-I cant believe that Roberto had survived on His own and ate whatever was edible. Also he has been Holding up with the pain in his arm from the bullet.(154/5)
Summarize-Chapter fourteen is about when Roberto meets a roman soldier who turns out to feed him and makes him paddle to Romania but later the soldier ends up to be be a runaway. And The soldier is also Italian and both of them face soldiers in there way and they talk about going back to Italy.(191/209)
Determine importance-The surprising part was when the soldier turned out to speak the same language as Roberto and that he was also wanting to go to Italy.
Visualize- I can see Roberto and Maurizio hiding from the soldiers in the shadows.(199/4)

Noah-The lady brought a knife to Roberto because she was going to take the bullet out and after that she would disinfect his arm with vodka.

    ReplyDelete
  15. 1)Infer- I assume that Roberto like many other people who survived the war will return to his country and will rebuild his life.

2)Question- Why does “Roman”, who is Italian, act like he’s afraid of German, Italian or Bulgarian soldiers?

3)Connection- Sometimes when your life maybe in danger people try to keep as much to themselves as possible. My life was never in danger but I can imagine that if it was I wouldn’t revel anything about myself to others unless it was absolutely necessary.

4)Determine Importance- It is very important to understand why people acted the way they did during the war. Roman/ Maurizio changed his ideas about being in the army because of his horrific experiences.

5)Judge/Evaluate- I am impressed with Romans decision to join partigiani after everything he went through during the war.

6)Summarize- Roberto survives work camps in Eastern Europe and after many horrifying events he is coming back to his country only to pick up on a new fight as a partigiani.

Conrad, I think Roberto decides to become a partigiani because he’s disappointed with the results of the war and he believes that he can change it if he continues to fight.

connection-Whenever I get in a place i dont want to be in I try to find a way out.
summarize-Roberto and some of his friends are separated and end up becoming slaves in a concentration camp where Roberto gets shot in the arm.
Judge/Evaluate- Roberto is a very strong person with the strength to take a bullet to the arm and put up with it.
